Meet Etrian Odyssey Untold II’s Cheerful Ranger, Quiet War Magus, And Slacker Paladin. August 14, 2014 . 2:49am

Flavio is the protagonist’s childhood friend in Etrian Odyssey Untold II, and currently a member of the Mizgarz expedition group. He’s the always-cheerful, talkative, and the life of the party of the guild.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir recently introduced its beast of a protagonist along with the princess heroine. The official website also tells us more about the three supporting characters who’ll play big roles in the game’s story.

Flavio

Flavio is the protagonist’s childhood friend, and currently a member of the Mizgarz expedition group. He’s the always-cheerful, talkative, and the life of the party of the guild.

Since this Ranger is straightforward kind of guy, he’s often the guy who keeps others in check.

Chloe

Chloe is a War Magus who traveled alongside Bertrand. She’s a strange deadpan girl who doesn’t talk much, and only budges when she finds something interesting. The few times she actually speaks, she can be a little outspoken, but never means any harm.

Bertrand

The protagonist suddenly meets Bertrand at the Ginnunga Ruins, where a certain ceremony takes place every hundred years. Bertrand is a feeble and irresponsible guy, which kind of goes against the ideal image of his class as a paladin.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir will release this winter in Japan for Nintendo 3DS.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II : The Knight of Fafnir Has Double The Dubbing. August 14, 2014 . 6:01pm

Producer and director Shigeo Komori shares some words for the game in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine.

Atlus are going to keep the Etrian Odyssey remake series rolling with Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir. Producer and director Shigeo Komori shared some words about the game in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine.

Famitsu starts out the interview by asking how Etrian Odyssey Untold II’s development came to be.

“The previous game, Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, was a title that was a new trial for the series,” starts Komori. “There was a part of us that felt uncertain whether the fans would accept the game, but after hearing many of you say ‘it was fun!’ it really made me happy.”

“Again, we know that there are fans waiting for the next main-numbered title after IV, but after hearing the grateful voices asking us to continue the Etrian Odyssey Untold series, we decided to make the second volume.”

Next, Famitsu asks if there are any changes from the previous game, The Millennium Girl.

“Our thought was to make an Etrian Odyssey game that focuses on the characters and story that many people can enjoy, and that development concept principle has not changed,” responds Komori. “Also, the subtitle of the game, ‘The Knight of Fafnir’ is about the protagonist.”

He continues, “Last time it was the subtitle of ‘The Millennium Girl,’ which revolved around the heroine’s story. However, this time it will be about the player’s role as the protagonist, and how his friends overcome obstacles in the fantasy RPG you’ll get to enjoy.”

The “Fafnir” is actually the name of the protagonist’s power that allows him to transform. While Komori couldn’t share much on the game’s story, he explains that it will completely transform his appearance while giving him a big boost in stats along with a variety of different skills he can use.

Using this transformation ability can easily change the tides in battle, but it’ll also have its limits, so you’ll need to think wisely about when and where you use it.

Meanwhile, the heroine Arianna is of the “Princess” class. According to Komori, the game’s character designer Yuji Himukai put quite the effort into her design. Himukai included roughly 20 different expressions for all the other characters, but Arianna will have over 50 different expressions in the game.

Similar to Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Maiden, there will also be animated scenes and voice acting in The Knight of Fafnir, however, Komori reveals that there’s about twice the volume of voice-acting, along with some new still-frame event styles as well.

Additionally, the game will support up to eight different save slots.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir is slated for release sometime this winter in Japan for Nintendo 3DS.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II Screenshots Show More Of The Game’s Mix Of Characters. August 15, 2014 . 4:31pm

Bertrand might look like a proper, gallant paladin at first glance, but he’s actually a slacker, irresponsible, and overall not that great of a person.

So far, we’ve seen all five key characters of Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir, with a recent look at Flavio, Chloe, and Bertrand. 4Gamer shows us a little more with their latest batch of screenshots for the game.

The “Fafnir” in the title is actually the protagonist’s power that lets him go into beast mode.

He looks like a serious guy, but at the same time, seems to get along pretty well with a cheerful childhood buddy like Flavio.

The first (above) is titled “Labyrinth | The Sea of Trees of the Ancient Remains”.

Additionally, Atlus have announced that the game is slated for release in Japan on November 27.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir is an upcoming remake of the second game in the series, and will have its own original story and characters. This week’s issue of Famitsu details shares a little more on its new features. [Thanks, Re:Zaregoto.]

A new character by the name Regina will make an appearance. She’s considered an exceptional chef, and also happens to be the daughter granddaughter of a minister in the game.

There’s also a new cooking feature, where players can gather ingredients from different gathering points in the dungeons and from monsters to make up to 70 different types of foods. These foods can also be sold in town for money, which can also be used to further expand the town.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II also lets you trade Grimoires for other items with adventurers found in shops. Additionally, you’ll also be able to make trades with other players through StreetPass.

While there aren’t too many details on how it works, the game has a “recycling” feature that can be used for unwanted Grimoires, too.

The game’s story revolves around the princess Arianna, who is featured in Atlus’ latest video.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir will have its own unique story and characters. While the “knight” part of the title is about the protagonist with a special power to transform into a beast, the story revolves around the princess Arianna, who is featured in Atlus’ latest video.

[YT]dyd2m8SFGn8[/YT]
The video starts out with Arianna saying, “Isn’t it wonderful? The scenery here is beautiful enough to make me forget how dangerous it is!”

She then introduces herself as Arianna, and says that she’s waiting for her allies who will be helping her in the exploration. She explains how people come and go, and there are also many carriages in this wealthy country.

Arianna sounds pretty excited and optimistic about the journey ahead, and sounds like she puts a great deal of value in her comrades, especially at the end when she says “I please ask if you could let me go with you, Mr. knight!”

In addition to the protagonist and Arianna, you’ll see the cheerful Ranger Flavio, the quiet War Magus girl Chloe, and the good for nothing slacker Paladin Bertrand. You can read more about them in our earlier report.

One of the new features in Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir is its cooking system, but instead of using it just to fill your party’s belly, it also has other important uses such as making money and expanding the town. Atlus shares more with their latest videos.

[YT]GT54Fno327E[/YT]
Grimoires are special crystals that grant you the powers of skills that can be used in combat. You’ll see a “Grimoire Chance!” notice when the moment comes for you to be able to use them. They come in different varieties like “Passive,” “Active,” and “Enemy”.

For example, when the Grimoire Chance for “Active” goes up, if you use an Active-type skill, then a Grimoire of that skill will have a higher chance of becoming created.

As you advance through the game, there will also be some that will let you use enemy skills, including FOE and other boss skills. Not all of them will be obtainable, but you can check the monster database to see if you can acquire a monster’s skills.

[YT]qv_PuAeDycg[/YT]
Next up, is a look at the cooking system in Etrian Odyssey Untold II. You’ll get to use various ingredients to cook up meals a the Guild House. The ingredients can be found out in the dungeons or by defeating certain monsters.

The recipe varieties come in three varieties of what appears to be “Japanese,” “Western,” and “Chinese” style foods. By confirming what they need and using ingredients, you’ll get to make legendary foods of up to 70 different varieties. Some of them will also have special effects.
[YT]w5F8PUKoVjo[/YT]
Finally, the last video shows more town development and how you make money using the food you create. Not only can you use the food you make on yourself, but there are all kinds of food requests from people in different districts with different tastes.

By selling food to those who have a taste for it, an extra bonus effect will occur, but it can also have negative effects if you sell them things they don’t like. You can also expand on certain parts of towns, so the number of people living there increases, which also improves food sales.

As far as the mapping parts go, Atlus were able to make small improvements thanks to what they learned from developing Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. One example being the treasure icon on the map, which now changes after accessing it.

The second video shows a little look at the mapping interface, along with how it looks like to save. In the developer’s blog, they mention that Etrian Odyssey Untold II will have much faster save writing and loading speeds.

As far as the mapping parts go, Atlus were able to make small improvements thanks to what they learned from developing Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. One example being the treasure icon on the map, which now changes after accessing it.

Another feature that was added thanks to Persona Q is the confirmation window that appears when making a command in battle. This option can be switched off and on as well.

Komori ended the blog post by mentioning that they’re currently still working on different ways to improve on the overall quality of the game, so fans will get to have the most comfortable experience once they get to try it out.

Here’s What Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir’s Demo Will Include. November 6, 2014 . 12:10am

The Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir demo will let you play up to the third level of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, and will have a level cap of 10.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir will release later this month in Japan, and a demo will be available for players in Japan starting today. Similar to the demo for the previous Etrian Odyssey Untold title, the demo will have the early parts of the game’s story. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

The demo will let you play up to the third level of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, and will have a level cap of 10. You can also hold up to 99 Grimoires, and the full version will let you carry up to 400.

While you can only have one save data, the full version will have one slot on the game cartridge with an additional eight on the SD card. And no worries, the save data from the demo version will carry over to the full version of the game when it gets released.

Similar to other Nintendo 3DS demos, Etrian Odyssey Untold II will give you up to 30 plays. As far as BGM goes, you’ll only have the new tracks in the demo, but the full version will let you switch between the FM version and the newer ones.

Due to capacity limits on the demo, data for BGM, images, and voices will be different at some parts from the full version of the game as well. The opening movie also won’t be included, which is also likely due to its capacity limit.

A few other features won’t be available in the demo, such as DLC, StreetPass, QR codes, and Album Mode.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II Has A Downloadble Quest Designed To Level Your Party Up. December 10, 2014 . 2:49am

Atlus has three more downloadable quests for Etrian Odyssey Untold 2. One is made for adventurers level 85 and above while the other is made to help level your party up.

We previously got a look at some of Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Knight of Fafnir’s DLC, which included a special Hot Spring quest. 4Gamer shows us what’s part of the third wave of the game’s DLC series.

The first one is called “A Clap of Thunder from the Empress’ Bow”. It’ll require you to be of at least level 85, and to have already reached the 8th floor of the labyrinth to take it on. This quest will cost 250 yen.

The second one is called “Assault! Hound from the Underworld”. This one is a little more challenging, as it requires you to be level 99 and have reached the 12th floor of the labyrinth to fight it. It’ll also cost 250 yen.

And finally, the “Four Leaves of Blessings, Offered to Adventurers” is one that helps you level up. In this quest, you’ll encounter a rare monster known as the “Bud of Yggdrasil,” but considering its requirements of only level 1 and reaching the 4th floor, it shouldn’t be too hard.

Similar to other quests that are there to help you out, it can be repeated as many times as you’d like. Upon clearing it, you’ll get a special item that can be cooking up, then used to help acquire experience points.

Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir’s third wave of DLC launches on December 11, 2014 in Japan.

The theme you see above costs 200 yen (plus tax) each. It comes with a normal wallpaper for the top and bottom screens, and includes custom music and sound effects.

This second theme includes a normal wallpaper on the top screen, but a panoramic wallpaper on the bottom screen, which scrolls through different character portraits. It also costs 200 yen (plus tax) and features custom music and sound effects.

Finally, this last theme also sports a panoramic wallpaper for the bottom screen, and this one scrolls through a whole bunch of characters. Like the others, it costs 200 yen (plus tax) and has custom music and sound effects.

Etrian Odyssey Untold: Your Brain Will Fill In The Rest. February 8, 2015 . 9:26am

Despite being visually appealing, Etrian Odyssey doesn’t show you much—it’s the writing that fills you in on what’s actually happening.

Picture this: you’re exploring the lake bed of a neon blue rainforest, coral reef trees around you. Pink lotus flowers slowly transport you across the pools of water, from one islet to the other.

As you walk the water-bounded path, a fish suddenly leaps from the stream. You look at the spot from whence it jumped and see the silhouette of another fish. Your companion, the spritely Raquna, exclaims: “Did you see that? It was pretty, the way it sparkled all those colours..!” Intrigued though you are, you see no need to fish it from the water and so resume your investigation.

That last paragraph was Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, filling in the tale as you uncover more of its signature lush environments, urging your brain to picture the rest of the imagery it was trying to invoke. It’s this vivid, yet succinct writing that forms the basis of what I like to call ‘The Etrian Odyssey formula,’ this indefinable magic that manages to make mundane tasks like gathering materials fun, and the simple act of exploration compulsive and addictive.

The other part of the formula is how you’re always scribbling the unknown on your map—you always feel like you’re making good progress, even when you’re staring at a game over screen. There’s something very fulfilling about looking at a half-completed map, reflecting on those astute observations you just made about the surrounding environment. It’s the writing that fills in the rest though, especially when so much of what happens in the game’s locations is described in writing only.

Take the taverns where adventurers of all sorts await, eager and not-so-eager to share the wisdom from their travels. You certainly don’t see the adventurers—in fact, once you’ve chosen to start a conversation with that “scarred protector”, or that “leggy dark hunter”, you’re only presented with a few short sentences encapsulated inside the game’s trademark gorgeous text boxes. I spoke to the “Precocious girl”, and she told me about how the floor I had just reached lets you ride a lotus flower. It’s snippets of information like this—information that’s clearly tied to what awaits you on your journey—which had me speeding back down to the labyrinth to find out whether it’s all true for myself.

On the contrary, the game’s writing in this context might not be so direct about things, but it’s just as revealing, if not more. There’s a hunter character that’ll only spill the beans if you buy her food. You’ll certainly want to do so, as you’ll then start forming some delectable image in your head from her sheer enthusiasm over the food that arrives. It’s moments like this where you really get a sense of ‘being there’, and it all certainly makes the chore of gathering information far more fun and involving as a result (in case you were wondering, I wanted to know how to get pressed fur from a Black Boar).

Not all the information is useful, of course, but again, the game’s sense of place is all the better for it, and you feel like you’re part of a richer world because of it. More recently, one “Shivering Researcher” told me a bit of gossip about Radha Hall, the base of the government of Etria, and how tense the atmosphere was there. Sure, I may not have learned anything useful for my adventures down in the labyrinth, but I did get pick up a subtle hint about which direction the plot may be going, without the game having to spell it out to me. This sort of writing really blends in well with the idea of interactive storytelling. How much of the little side details you uncover is down to your own actions.

As noted earlier, the labyrinths themselves are filled with little things that you don’t necessarily see, but read about. Just reading about those fish back in the azure rainforest had me scribbling down their locations with terms like “Sparkling fish” and “Glaring fish”. Even now, I can still remember exactly how they were depicted in the text. I soon wanted to explore every nook and cranny of the place, searching for more of these strange fish, rather than to attain some arbitrary goal like a map completion percentage (thankfully, Atlus have kept such wonder-spoiling measures away from the series thus far). Even better, it turned out later on that these fish were part of a fishing quest—instantly enhancing the joys of searching for them out of compulsion anyway.

Elsewhere, even the less serene environments are brought to life by the written word. Etrian Untold’s new area, Gladsheim, is an unexplored, ancient ruin that’s filled with technology from centuries past and deadly FOE enemies. A big change in atmosphere for the game, then, but the game’s writing gets you feeling the location’s intricacies beyond its visuals, or Yuzo Koshiro’s enchanting soundtrack.

Despite being visually appealing, Etrian Odyssey doesn’t show you much—it boils down to an angular connection of square mazes and rooms, with only important details visible. Again, it’s the writing that fills you in on what’s actually happening in there, doubly important given Etrian’s first person viewpoint, and how things might not always be happening in front of you. Upon activating a strange computer panel, I was told “a heavy, metallic sound echoes from somewhere”. Having scouted out the area beforehand, I immediately pictured those locked-down shutter doors releasing themselves.

Sometimes you’ll read about something that’s happening to you, the adventurer. Low on energy, I discovered a crevice in a nearby wall of the great labyrinth’s Primitive Forest by sheer luck. In game terms, that would mean a wall at B10F, coordinates D4. But you wouldn’t have known it from the writing alone. “You can feel your aches receding as you enjoy the cool, dry breeze” the game proclaims. In a way, Etrian Odyssey’s writing and how it fits in with the way the game presents itself to you reminded me a bit of Metroid Prime, another game which tells a huge chunk of its tale through the written word, and leaves the player to decide how much of its rich world to uncover.

In Etrian’s case, though, the writing plays a far more important role in forming a believable world, and it does a great job at painting a convincing picture within the constraints of a first person, grid-based dungeon crawler. The text it presents to you is vivid and succinct, describing the surrounding environments, your observations, and its inhabitants’ words to you in ways such that – like a good book – your mind will simply fill in the rest.

Food for thought:

1. A part of what makes the text so powerful boils down to the localisation team’s choice of font, Neuton. It fits the atmosphere of the games to a tee, particularly as most of the text is presented to you by way of a second-person narrative which describes your viewpoint and actions.

2. I was initially worried that the introduction of characters would spoil some of the wonder in Etrian Untold, but it didn’t. Your companions are a varied bunch—simply adding more viewpoints to the mix—and stereotypical anime tropes are kept to a bare minimum. It’s a tale of wonder, after all, not of the familiar.

3. It’ll be interesting to see whether Etrian Mystery Dungeon’s switch in genres to a third person roguelike affects how the game communicates its world and narrative to the player. The main series tended to use its narrative for even the smallest things that you couldn’t see, and I wonder if a perspective shift will undo this.

Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight coming to North America this summer
Published 5 hours ago. 13 comments.

Get the full rundown below, via Atlus.
About
The next entry of the Etrian Odyssey Untold series is essentially two games in one – the first, a Nintendo 3DS update to Etrian Odyssey 2: Heroes of Lagaard (released on Nintendo DS) with new dungeon layouts, new graphics, and system improvements from the recent Etrian Odyssey Untold. The second is the Untold portion – a brand new story mode with a fixed party, voiced dialogue, and animated cutscenes that follows the bittersweet tale of the Fafnir Knight, Princess Arianna, Flavio *- another hero of the Midgard Library – and the two adventurers, Bertrand and Chloe. The five meet while exploring the Ginnungagap ruins, and then after misfortune unfolds, they venture back and forth between the Yggdrasil Labyrinth and Ginnungagap, slowly working their way to discovering the origins of the Fafnir Knight.
Key Features

  • Creatures of Comfort: Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold is the seventh entry in the Etrian franchise (eighth if you count Persona Q, and you know we do) and has a level of refinement that could only come from consumer feedback. Improved systems and mapping make Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold one of the most approachable Etrian titles to date.
  • Untold Classics: Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold has two ways to play the game, continuing the tradition of the Untold franchise. Classic mode revisits the original Etrian Odyssey 2 with updated graphics, player conveniences, and a full roster of classes. Story mode features a fixed party, but includes voiced dialogue, animated cutscenes and a bittersweet arc that explores the relationship between Arianna and the Fafnir Knight.
  • What the Fafnir? The titular knight is the Fafnir class and is a never-before-seen addition to the Etrian franchise. He has the ability to transform into a beastly demonic form, which enhances his attributes and abilities, and is only available in the Story mode.
  • Bring a Blanket: Just as in Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and Persona Q, in addition to normal difficulty, players can choose Picnic mode for a low-difficulty experience or the masochi… er, veterans amongst them can choose Expert mode for a punishing play-through.
