Etrian Odyssey V listed for 3DS in Atlus survey

Published 18 hours ago. 41 comments.
Etrian Odyssey's latest likely a 3DS title.

EOV-3DS-Atlus-Survey-Listing_001.jpg

Atlus announced Etrian Odyssey V back in November 2014 without a platform. The studio said in January that the game is in its final stages of development, but Atlus still hasn’t announced its platform.

A new Atlus survey that went live today might have confirmed the game’s platform. In one of the questions, it lists Etrian Odyssey V as a 3DS title:

EOV-3DS-Atlus-Survey-Listing_002.jpg

A release window for Etrian Odyssey V is still to be announced, but we should start getting information when the weather warms up, according to Atlus.

3DS sequel due out on August 4 in Japan.

EOV-Screens_03-02-16.jpg

The first direct-feed screenshots, Japanese box art, and story outline for Etrian Odyssey V: The End of the Long Myth, Atlus’ recently detailed 3DS sequel, have hit the internet via the game’s newly listed Amazon Japan product page.

The dungeon RPG is set in a new land called “Arcadia,” where four races exist—the Arslan, Lunaria, Cerian, and Brani. Players can customize their own character and choose from at least 22 different character voices. Read more here.

Here’s the official story outline:
Story
“Arcadia,” a land dominated by swords and magic. A huge tree from ancient times called “Yggdrasil” exists here and is to be the reason that peace visits the world.

There is a legend about that World Tree. If you can manage to reach its untrodden summit, it is said that your dreams will come true.

“The power to dominate the world.” “The most powerful.” “The world’s mysteries.” “Expensive treasures.”

Although there are four races that live in this land, each has a different legend, but no person has been able to confirm them.

From the city “Aolith” at the bottom of Yggdrasil, the official orders are issued. In pursuit of the legend, the courageous adventurers who will challenge Yggdrasil gather in Aolith. You’re one of the adventurers in response to the official orders.

Whether it’s for wealth and honor, or to satisfy your sense of adventure, you’ll challenge the labyrinths and aim for the top of the World Tree.

Etrian Odyssey V details races, classes, character customization, and more

Published 11 hours ago. 25 comments.
Atlus upcoming 3DS sequel gets first media blast.
Atlus has released new Etrian Odyssey V: The End of the Long Myth information and screenshots, introducing the game’s four races, 10 classes, character customization, and more.
Get the information below.
■ Story
“Arcadia,” a land dominated by swords and magic. A huge tree from ancient times called “Yggdrasil” exists here and is to be the reason that peace visits the world.
There is a legend about that World Tree. If you can manage to reach its untrodden summit, it is said that your dreams will come true.
“The power to dominate the world.” “The most powerful.” “The world’s mysteries.” “Expensive treasures.”

Although there are four races that live in this land, each has a different legend, but no person has been able to confirm them.
From the city “Aeolis” at the bottom of Yggdrasil, the official orders are issued. In pursuit of the legend, the courageous adventurers who will challenge Yggdrasil gather in Aeolis. You’re one of the adventurers in response to the official orders.
Whether it’s for wealth and honor, or to satisfy your sense of adventure, you’ll challenge the labyrinths and aim for the top of the World Tree.

■ Form a Party from Four Classes and 10 Jobs
Form your own party from four, newly prepared races and 10 classes. Because classes are different per tribe, it’s good to choose while considering how they’ll balance your party. You can also pick your favorite character illustrations.

EOV_03-22-16_015.jpg

A class that supports its comrades with a mysterious power.

■ Aim for the the top of the World Tree!

The player’s goal is to get to the unexplored summit of the World Tree. The inside of the World Tree is a complicated labyrinth. And what’s more, the labyrinth’s shape changes based on whether it’s day or night. The monsters that appear also change, so you should pay attention to the passage of time during your exploration.

EOV_03-22-16_016.jpg

The fortress city, Aeolis.

EOV_03-22-16_017.jpg

The first level of Yggdrasil, Chinju no Jukai.

■ The Flow of Exploration
Form your party from 10 unique classes, and take on the tricky labyrinth. While you’re exploring, you’ll draw a map with the stylus, and move forward using that map as a guide.
■ Infinite Character Creation Possibilities
Players can customize the class, name, and outward appearance for a maximum of five party members. In addition to each of the 10 classes’ four different appearance options, you can also customize hair color, eye color, skin color, and voice (or set it to no voice).
Customization options include:

  • Hair color – 12 basic colors, or freely customize via RGB.
  • Skin color – 12 basic colors.
  • Eye color – 12 basic colors, or freely customize each eye via RGB.
  • Voices – 40 voices, or no voice.

Since you can check skills during character creation, you can consider your party’s balance in addition to your character’s appearance.

Character creation has the highest degree of freedom in series history.

The 40 voices are each tied to a number. Select one to hear a sample voice before affirming.
Players can choose from the following voice actors for their character: Shouta Aoi, Satomi Arai, Akira Ishida, Toru Okawa, Ayaka Ohashi, Yoshihisa Kawahara, Misaki Kuno, Mitsuki Saiga, Takuya Satou, Asami Seto, Atsuko Tanaka, Kosuke Toriumi, Joji Nakata, Kaori Nazuka, Natsuki Hanae, Saori Hayami, Megumi Han, Yoko Hikasa, Rina Hidaka, Yui Horie, Ayumu Murase, and Tsubasa Yonaga.

■ Draw Your Own Map

Players will advance the spacious, complicated labyrinths, where a number of gimmicks are set, and draw up a labyrinth map with the stylus to create their own labyrinth capture map.

■ Auto-Mapping

Of course, if you’d rather not draw your own map, you can configure “On” or “Off” auto-mapping.

■ A Number of Difficulties Await

You’ll obtain various materials in the labyrinth. In addition to mining and gathering spots, there are new fishing spots, too.

“Mini-Events” are events triggered in dungeons that each come with their own title and summary.

In dungeons, there is a place where you can raise a fire, and bake and eat the food you’ve obtained.

EOV_03-22-16_026.jpg
Monsters not seen in previous games will stand before you in Etrian Odyssey V.
■ Field On Enemey (F.O.E.)

There are many monsters that wander around the labyrinth and plague adventurers. You can battle them, but you can also avoid battles by using the Field on Enemy’s movements and habits.
Etrian Odyssey V is due out for 3DS in Japan on August 4.

The Hound is a long-ranged summoning attacker that live by the bow and attack cooperatively with their hawk and hound. They specialize in binding parts of the enemy’s body.

Using their pets, Hounds are able to attack with their own bow and arrow and have another attack from either their hound or hawk. The hawk specializes in offensive powers with more damage output while the hound can bring heals to the party and bind enemies.

The Shaman is a back-row support-type class, where they use their ability to communicate with beings that can’t be seen for various support for the party, which includes heals and protections.

Using divine powers, Shaman are experts of support. For example, they have skills that provide party defense buffs for three turns, and another one that provides heals to go with buffs for the whole party.

Become an adventurer and reach the top of the Yggdrasil Tree.

EOV-Americas-Announce.jpg

Atlus will release Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth for 3DS in the Americas this fall, the company announced. It will cost $39.99 and be fully voiced in English.

As for Europe, an Atlus representative told Gematsu that it is still to be dated for the region.

Here’s an overview of the dungeon RPG, via Atlus:
About
The fifth main installment of the long-running Etrian Odyssey series is finally arriving! Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth chronicles the quest of a new adventurer (hey, that’s you!) as he or she attempts to reach the top of the towering Yggdrasil Tree. For it is said that whoever braves the dangers of the dreaded Yggdrasil Labyrinth and reaches the summit will have their greatest wish fulfilled…
Key Features

  • A Choose-your-own-odyssey Feel – Starting with the creation of your party to exploring the uncharted labyrinth of the Yggdrasil Tree, Beyond the Myth is all about choosing how your own adventure unfolds. Test your survival skills by wisely navigating the winding floors of Yggdrasil, using shrewd tactics when battling gruesome beasts, making the right decisions during various “scenarios,” and more. To meet these challenges, the home base city of Iorys is ready for all your buying/selling, recruiting, and information-gathering needs!
  • Gameplay Fit for a True Pathfinder – It wouldn’t be an Etrian Odyssey game without the life-or-death need to map your progress. For those new to the series, the bottom screen of the 3DS displays a top-down, tile-based map that must be filled out while dungeon crawling. Players can use the map to mark the locations of treasures, doors, enemies, environmental obstructions, and more. Expect the unexpected at every turn–and then make a note on the map so it’s not so unexpected next time!
  • Epic Turn-based Battles – There’s a reason why no one has ever reached the top of Yggdrasil. Dangerous creatures and utterly terrifying FOEs–high-level mini-bosses, for you newcomers–roam the labyrinth on every floor, so prepare to test your mettle with challenging turn-based battles. Proper planning is a must and balancing strong party composition is absolutely crucial for success. You’ll need the right team to unleash Union Attacks and level the playing field!
  • Expanded Character Creation and Customization – With four unique races, 10 distinct classes, more customization options than any previous game in the franchise, and a streamlined skill tree/class advancement, you can shape a party to whatever your heart desires.
  • A Magical Art Style and Score – Longtime series illustrator Yuji Himukai and renowned composer Yuzo Koshiro return to add their signature magic to the art and music in the game.

Here’s an overview of each item, via Atlus:

Wielder of the Ancient Power.

EOV-Trailer_08-03-17.jpg

Atlus has released a new trailer for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth introducing the Warlock class.

Here’s an overview of the class, via Atlus:

There are a lot of monsters that call the Yggdrasil home. Sure, cold hard steel and explosive gunpowder can usually get the job done, but sometimes a little more “oomph” is required when dealing with these pesky beasts. Thankfully, the Celestrian’s Warlock class provides a magical spark to these engagements. And when we say spark, we actually mean ancient power that can summon raging fireballs, monstrous hailstorms, amplify other magical abilities, and more! As they level up, Warlocks can further specialize in base elemental skills (fire, ice, and lightning) or branch out to learn new elemental earth and wind spells.
If you missed it, the previous trailer introduced the Dragoon class.

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth will launch physically and digitally for 3DS in the Americas on October 17, Atlus announced.
In Europe, the game is still slated for fall.
As previously announced, launch editions and pre-orders of Etrian Odyssey V will include the following bonuses:

    • 24-Page Art Book – Beautiful character art and concept sketches by the illustrious Yuji Himukai cover the pages of this magnificent art book. The unique explorers that will fill up your party are a wonder to behold.

    • Outer Box – The Yggdrasil tree and eager adventurers adorn this colorful outer box which protects the precious treasures it holds within.
Atlus also released a new trailer introducing the Fencer class. Here is the company’s overview:

It just wouldn’t be smart to traverse the Yggdrasil tree without someone who is pretty handy with a blade, so why not have an Earthlain Fencer watch your back when exploring? The Fencer is master of both rapier and shield, and let’s just say that during fights they really like to get straight to the point. Quick on their feet, Fencers excel at evasion, stabbing, initiating defensive buffs, stabbing, chaining together attacks with other party members, and stabbing. They can further specialize in their agility by sacrificing unnecessary equipment for speed or go all in with their swordsmanship to become a whirlwind of pain.

Atlus has released a new trailer for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth introducing the Masurao class.

Here’s an overview of the class, via Atlus:

Do you know what’s really effective against the deadly creatures that call the Yggdrasil tree home? If you said katanas, you’re absolutely right! Luckily, the Therian Masurao in Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth just so happens to delight in slicing and dicing with beautifully crafted Japanese swords.

They can be slotted in the frontline to slash everything in their path and can even attack multiple opponents in a single attack.

Oh, they can also lure rare enemies into combat to get better items and gain more experience with the New Challenger skill. The better the skill, the rarer the enemies, and the greater the rewards!

The Masurao can specialize in using one sword to become a master of the blade or it can learn to wield up to four of them and become a bona fide sword saint.
If you missed it, previous trailers introduced the Fencer and Dragoon classes.

The healers of the party.

Atlus has released a new trailer for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth introducing the Botanist class.

Here’s an overview of the class, via Atlus:

Having sharp katanas and powerful magic at your disposal when journeying up the Yggdrasil Tree is nice and all, but having the best warriors in the land mean nothing without a healer. Thankfully, the Botanist is there to make sure everyone in the party stays happy and healthy during adventures. These scholars of the medical arts use their vast knowledge of herbs and plant life to mend and invigorate those wounded in battle. These healers can further expand their skills in the medical field with The Merciful Healer specialization or they can take on a more offensive role as The Graceful Poisoner. If they choose to go the poison route, they can unleash devastating ailments, such as paralyze, blind, petrify, and more, on unwitting creatures.

Atlus has released a new trailer for

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth
introducing the Pugilist class.

Here’s an overview of the class, via Atlus:
If you’re looking to dish out more damage while adventuring in the Yggdrasil Tree, you can’t go wrong with having a Pugilist in the party. These masters of martial arts and bare-knuckle brawling are ready to punch some beasts in the face, so be sure to slot them in the front line and let them loose. Besides being able to inflict game changing binds and paralysis on enemies, Pugilists can sacrifice HP in order to deal out some very punishing attacks. It’s never a bad idea to roll around with someone whose fists are considered deadly weapons.

Two more classes introduced.

EOV-Trailers_09-15-17.jpg

Atlus has released new trailers for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth introducing the Necromancer and Rover classes.

Here’s an overview of each class, via Atlus:
Necromancer
It’s no secret that death awaits all who enter the Yggdrasil tree, but did you know that you can bring death into the tree? Ok, that sounds a bit confusing, but it all makes sense when we explain what the Necromancer can bring to the table. These masters of the undead arts aren’t the best fighters, but they can summon wraiths to do their dirty work instead. These wraiths are not only able to dish out and absorb damage, but can also be sacrificed for the greater good. Want to heal the party? Sacrifice a wraith! What about disable enemy defenses for a few turns? Sacrifice a wraith! Trying to increase the party’s magic strength? Sacrifice a wraith! Although Necromancers are a bit unconventional, they’re skills are invaluable to the party.

Rover

Meet the real hunters of Yggdrasil, the Rover class. With an expertise in long ranged attacks, the Rover class can deliver some hard hits while in the back line. Their knowledge of nature is a hot commodity in battle, especially when it comes to special quests that involve exploring uncharted territory. Besides pursuing monsters, these hunters can also get help from animals to provide both offense and defense support.

If you missed it, previous trailers introduced the Pugilist, Botanist, Masurao, Fencer and Dragoon classes.

Atlus has released a new trailer for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth introducing the Harbinger class.
Here’s an overview of the class, via Atlus:
Wielding both a giant scythe and the mysterious energy known as miasma, Harbingers are reapers of destruction ready to protect you at a moment’s notice. Besides being able to dish out the damage by cutting down swaths of enemies, Harbingers can harness the powers of miasma to help the party or hurt enemies. Using TP, they can summon powerful miasma armor with passive support or status ailment abilities (like curse, paralyze, etc…). Be warned though, wearing the armor will drain a little bit of HP. They might be an unconventional class, but can be a force to be reckoned with in the right hands.

If you missed it, previous trailers introduced the Necromancer, Rover, Pugilist, Botanist, Masurao, Fencer and Dragoon classes.

Atlus has released a new trailer for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth introducing the Shaman class.

Here’s an overview of the class, via Atlus:
Sometimes a party doesn’t need more damage dealers or absorbers. Sometimes a party needs someone who can bring the buffs and make the team an even deadlier fighting machine than before. Luckily, the wise and powerful Shamans does just that and more! The spiritual Shaman is a support class that utilizes various prayers to help allies deal more damage and take more hits. Besides helping boost stats and raising resistances for the party, Shamans can even nullify all of its buffs to unleash a deadly attack wave against foes. In the right situations, this move can mean the difference between life or death. Check out the Shaman in action below!

Etrian Odyssey V’s Classes Can Give Players A Strong Start. October 10, 2017 . 12:00pm

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth’s character classes and races help give people an opportunity to build a balanced party and tackle the labyrinth’s challenges.

2 comments Read >

legendary_01_thumb.jpg

A new Etrian Odyssey is upon us, which means it is time to sink perhaps a hundred or more hours into a labyrinth. Plenty of foes (and F.O.E.s) await us. Like other installments, Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth does its best to ensure early adventures are balanced ones. This time, we have four races to choose from for characters and 10 jobs available at launch. But which ones are good to go? Which warriors might you want to use? Well, let’s go over some details that might help you on your way.

First, let’s start with races. While each race initially has certain classes tied to them. When you create a character, you are limited to what roles they can or can’t take. Which makes sense, because races do have an impact on stats. Earthlains are essentially humans and are well rounded, but best suited for physical attackers and tanks. Therians are basically beast people that are strong and fast. You really want them as attackers. Celestrians are elves and Brounis are halflings, with both classes suited to magical arts. By the time you’ve charted the first floor, you will be able to reclass and swap an established character to any possible job.

Aside from stat spread, what really ends up mattering with race is the race skills. Each one has different abilities. Now, this doesn’t mean one race won’t learn one ability at all. It could just mean theirs appears at level 20, rather than a lower level. So every race is going to have a “_____’s Grace” skill at level one that could restore some TP when you use a base skill, with the name changing depending on species. Or everyone except for Therians will eventually get Animal Care. I would say you should have at least one Earthlain in a party, for their Resuscitate Union Skill and Bulwark, Nimble Arts, and Resilience skills that reduce damage from all kinds of physical attacks and lower chances of status effects and bindings. One Therian on hand is nice for having Brute Strength, Hunting Skill, and Precaution skills that can allow the party to lift heavy objects in labyrinth events, hunt animals for food and perhaps get a preemptive strike. The only race I’m not really impressed with is the Brouni, as it feels like for my party’s sake, I would be better off with a Celestrian fulfilling a supportive Botanist or Shaman role instead. But, the Brouni is the only one with a Haggle race skill at level 20 that takes 5% off of the price of items in the shop.

Now, let’s get to classes. The first one that I can not recommend enough is the Rover. This is a job initially only available to Therians. What’s great about the Rover is, depending on the build, you have a character that will be dealing pretty good damage and either acting as a healer and binder or attacking groups. It all depends on whether you have them specialize in Hawk or Hound attacks. Don’t bother trying to do both. It splits the focus too much and you really will find yourself either healing and binding all the time or trying to damage groups of enemies. With the way Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth works, having multiple characters from the same class in your party can really work out well, both in the early and end game thanks to specifications. Popping at least one Rover Therian into your party is going to make a big difference. Especially since you have the Animal Therapy skill that will restore a small amount of HP at the end of each turn when a Hawk or Hound is summoned. That helps a lot in the first two Stratums.

The next class people should really consider having is a Pugilist. This one can end up being one of your biggest damage dealers and enemy harassers. While I went out of my way to avoid attacks like Devil’s Fist and Overexertion, which consume HP to either damage an enemy (with a splash damage bonus) or increase an ally’s attack, in order to increase my character’s survivability on the front lines, I have gone all out on One-Two Punch. The Pugilist has Concussion, Arm Crusher, and Low Blow, three skills that focus on binding the head, arms, and legs. If you get all three to level three, One-Two Punch opens up and does damage, then follows up with attacks designed to bind areas that aren’t already bound. It is a good way to try and make a foe useless. Also, it works very well with a Rover’s Hound Hunter Shot, which could end up binding an enemy’s arms or legs.

Now, everybody already knows how great mage characters are in Etrian Odyssey games. Some people even run multiple ones, so as to have them specializing in specific elements. The Warlock is as solid a magic class as ever. So that’s not the magical class I’m going to also suggest today. Instead, I’m going to go ahead and say a Shaman is a great inclusion. I’ve found this character also works well in conjunction with a Rover with the Hound. This is because the Hound’s Aid skill could be used to cure someone of a specific ailment and heal a large amount of HP, while a Shaman could use either buffing Prayers with the Gospel skill leveled up to increase the health of the whole party. Focusing on buffs is a good move here, if you already have a Warlock in the party, since you could then have Heaven’s Gift to take away one ally’s buff in exchange for a healing spell. If you don’t want to have a Warlock on hand, then specializing in the Blaze, Hail, and Bolt Prayers, which adds buffs to protect the party from those elemental attacks, then getting Dance Oracle to dispel that buff in exchange for a magic spell of that element that hits every enemy in exchange for temporary lower resistance, is a viable option.

But then, keep in mind that these are only my recommendations and suggestions. The beauty of Etrian Odyssey is, with a little creativity and determination, people can make all sorts of parties and combinations work. Those who are willing to power through and prepare these characters for everything will succeed, even if they load up on characters that, from the outside might not seem like they would work. But really, consider having at least one Rover in your party; they are awesome.

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth will come to the Nintendo 3DS on October 17, 2017. A demo is now available on the eShop.
