Evanescence

I like Amy Lee's voice, but apart from that...erm..*shrug*

I get tired of all of the Ev-bashing that goes on around here. You can't deny that they're talented. No one belts like Amy, and the instrumentalists are equally amazing. Bashing cheesy, out of tune music, or music that isn't really music (coughrapcough), I can understand, but you can't deny the effort and talent of these people. I mean, come on, they used Mozart as an inspiration.

And before anyone dares label me emo, know this: I'm a huge fan of, and am persuing a career in, musical theatre. That's right. Show tunes. Take that razor you'd offer me and shove it up your ass.

I am tired and mean no offense to anyone who would not say what I suggested above.

not anymore their not. you can tell ben moody was the writing talent behind the first album. i listen to fallen and a couple of songs from the open door, and im like what the **** happened?! then i remind myself that ben left. the open door makes them sound like a pre-freshman album.

i don't care what went on between amy and ben, they need to get him back.

Say you like Black Sabbath and I'll give two thumbs up.

Heck yeah, I love Sabbath. I asked for their boxed set for Christmas and I've never gotten it. :csad:

Seriously though, Sabbath are among the best. Classic rock bands in general are my favorites.

I hate Evanescence with every bone in my body. I'd rather peel my face off as I watch American Idol then listin to one of their albums.

You should grab the greatest hits CD, it's gold.

I have the Sytsem Of The Universe two disc set. I was going to get We Sold Our Souls For Rock N' Roll, but it's only one disc. Plus, the sound quality on SOTU was enough for me to decide what to get. (I've always been a bit of a junkie when it comes to sound quality).

And for the record, "Paranoid" is the best song to drive to. When I get my license, the first thing I'm going to do is drive through a deserted area, blast "Paranoid" at full volume and break the 100 mile speed barrier.

Wait, Evanescence is good because they used Mozart as an inspiration?

What?

It's dumb logic right there. Good Charlotte can credit John Lennon as a major inspiration to them. Doesn't make them any good.

Evanescence makes me want to punch disabled people in the face...

i'll never understand the appeal of evanescence. sure, the chick's got some great pipes, but the music is lifeless, and lyrics are vapid. i mean, really it's basically pre-packaged pop music marketed to trailer park punk/goth kids.

Very true.

same thing goes with bands like 3 day's grace, seether, blue october, stone sour...the list goes on.

I personally believe that as far as music goes, the current generation is culturally bankrupt. The music of today has no message, no real artistic value to speak of. There are some exceptions (The White Stripes, The Killers), but overall, we live in a horrible time as far as popular music goes.

by pipes, you mean boobs right?

The only remotely cool thing about Evanessence is that Amy Lee shares a birthday with me.

that depends on where you're looking. if you're talking about the radio, you're 100% on the money. you look at radio 30 or 40 years ago, and they're playing the beatles, the stones, led zepplin, etc...today's a different story. today we get britney spears and akon. awesome.

but if you're refering to music in general, i'd disagree. if you're looking for artistic value in your pop music, check out hot chip, the knife, imogen heap, cat power, the elected, rilo kiley (and jenny lewis), postal service, the raconteurs (which you're probably already familiar with if you dig the stripes), air, ect. and that's just "pop" music.

that's exactly what i meant.

True. My main problem is with mainstream radio. The thing is, thirty or fourty years ago, it was much different. Quality was a key factor in music, as was artistic integrity. Just about every major band and solo artist back then wrote their songs (and the ones who didn't always chose solid writers to compose their material), were talented and skilled musicians, had messages and intelligent topic brought up in their music, and actually used their own voices without using digital enhancements.

The problem with the kids who listen to the mainstream radio live in a hollow, imaginary bubble where nothing ever goes wrong and everything must be seen as positive. They don't like to be challenged by music as well as other forms of art. They don't like to listen to music that makes them think, that possesses something of value. When I hear a young kid today say, "John Lennon is boring and he sucks" or something along those lines, I just think, I just think, "Okay, this kid obviously can't stomach music with actual meaning to it. He needs to listen to moder mainstream pop music, where nothing really is thought provoking or of meaning.

And I'm not some purde who thinks the only good music is the kind that involves social commentary and all that. I do enjoy a good harmless pop tune every so often. For example, I love Barry Manilow, I love ABBA, heck I even sneak a Bay City Rollers tune into my cd collection. But at the same time, they weren't entirely devoid of talent. Manilow, whether you care to admit it, is a heck of songwriter, and his talent for crafting melodies that perfectly fit the words to his music is pretty damn impressive. Same with ABBA.

But, as you said, the best music today isn't mainstream. Heck, the majority of those artists I haven't even heard of. If they are indeed as good as you say they are, but not widely recognized, then the music world is indeed suffering.

Evanesence sucks ass, go pick up some good music like The Flaming Lips, The Shins or Sufjan Stevens.

i think the biggest problem with music today is technology. but at the same time, it's one of it's best tools.

with today's studios and audio editting software, anyone can make anyone a pop star. in a world where that's possible, pop stars are stars not because of their talent, but because of their looks. that's killing the music industry. 30 years ago, britney spears would never have made it out of the trailer park.

now that said, technology is really helping a lot of great artists and bands to get some recognition. itunes, myspace and other social networking websites are a GREAT way to hear new music and expose new talent. i'm all for that. also, technology has added to the creative side of music making. there are a lot of musicians that use non traditional instruments to make their music. take a duo like psapp. they make incrediblely lush and beautiful music, and they make it all with children's toys and gadgets they've put together by taking apart keyboards and calculators and putting them back together again. or a band called mutemath, who use a sort of touch screen guitar thing made from an old atari. that's pretty cool ****.

not to mention recording software like garageband (which comes with any apple computer), is making it WAY easier for bands and artists to record and mix without spending a fortune on equipment.

i could go on and on, but that in a nutshell is my take on music these days.

Interesting, I do agree with you.:up:
