Do you remember the original movie with Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and more? This film has so many cult fans, myself included, but is also quite a bit dated and really is forgotten. Is it time that this 80s child sci-fi fantasy film got a remake with a new cast, or just a sequel?

I remember watching this a number of times growing up but I think I'm indifferent to them making a remake or sequel.

Explorers is one of those films that really teeters the edge between "cult classic", and "okay for its time". It played into America's renewed fascination with space travel in the 80s. Not to say they can't update it for today. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing what someone with the right idea could do with it. And remember, the original is admittedly an incomplete film, making parts of it pretty damn random, especially the ending.

Hi,

I'd rather see a sequel to the first movie since at the end the kids get access to a bigger device for space travel ( I assume it is for space travel ).
I've watched Explorers recently ( a year ago maybe ) and it was still fun, old memories.

End of Line

love the movie as a kid, it would be cool if they did a sequel. But with all the 80s stuff(bearing a few series) getting remake/reimaging these days its bound to get remade soon.

yeah, River Phoenix is dead unless you're wiling to recast the part in the sequel.

Anyway the movie also bombed. One of the actors a couple years back, I think Ethan Hawke said that kids made fun of him at school because it didn't do so well.

Hahaha! Yeah, like most of those kids did much at that age. That's what you call pure jealousy.

though its a cult favorite now, and speaking of other old 80s films, didnt tron also not do hot in the box office in the 80s and we are getting a sequel out of that.

also i was wondering if any one knows if fye's/target's/best buy's still have this film out on dvd. I been wanting to get it for a long time. But Always forget about it when i was getting something else.

Just re watched this. I still love it as much as when I was a kid.

Wow... I don't know.... The film itself is both good but dated... The goofy alien at the end.... I just don't know. It's funny, but maybe this is just one of those things that needs neither. Remake or Sequel. What Hollywood does need to do is look at some of those classic and cult films for young people made in the 89's and ask what makes them work. For myself, the best ones just don't treat the intended audiences as lowest common denominator knuckledraggers nor as delicate little angels that cannot handle anything truly negative or dark.

I still think the film is a lot of fun. They could pull of a sequel by having the original kids be parents and the story could focus on their kids. Not sure how popular it would be nowadays.

Yeah I remember it as a small child. I liked it then, I'd be all for remaking it for a new generation.

Flight of the Navigator too.

I like this movie until they meet the goofy alien kids at the end. Everything up until that point I really liked.

I recently rewatched this and forgot how much I enjoyed it as a kid, it's pure 80's nostalgia and I loved it.

I think they should just let it be & sit for another 10-20 years before considering a remake.

The 3rd kid Jason Presson never went on to have as big a career as Ethan or River did. Had a big crush on Amanda Peterson after watching this movie back in the day.:hrt:
