Exclusive: Fantastic Four is Getting the Boot...a Reboot that is
Monday, 09 March 2009

IESB's has heard word around town is Fantastic Four over at 20th Century Fox is gearing up for a reboot.

With Daredevil already getting the once over and Planet of the Apes also in the running for a new start with a prequel in the works Fantastic Four is joining the reboot gang.

The two films previously released never really caught on with the fans and the studio is reportedly looking to completely retool, recast and recrew the franchise. This means no Tim Story, no Iaon, no Julian (thank the maker, he never sat well with me as Dr. Doom), no Chris, no Chiklis and no Jessica.

The first Fantastic Four in 2005 pulled in over $330 million worldwide and the second film, Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer, opened in 2007 with a total box office take of $290 million. Both made money and were commercial successes but the reviews were lackluster and the fan reaction was mediocre.

The franchise is looking to be "less bubble gum" this time round following the Iron Man template, which was a complete success in reviews and box office take but a bit darker when it came to its superhero. Iron Man was in no way as dark as The Dark Knight but was funny, action-y as well as a bit on the serious side.

Now who do you want as Mr. Fantastic this time out? Which director would be the best choice to bring this story to the screen once again?

Stay tuned to the IESB for further updates!

EDIT: merge pleaser. Goddamit, I didn't see the other one, and it was bumped while I was posting this :(

This is exactly the kind of **** that is going to kill the genre. Why can't Fox just stay away from these superhero movies? :(

I liked the original cast except for Alba. Go with Rachel McAdams for Sue.

Damn you, FOX! Please, just let the rights revert back to Marvel! We all know this is the only reason they are going through with the reboots, so they don't lose the rights.

I got excited until I read that Fox would still be involved.

The best thing for Fox would be to produce giving Marvel creative control, and connect the movie with the Marvel movieverse that started with Iron Man and Hulk...

But losing control ain't in Dox dictionary :(

*sigh* I swear Rothman is intentionally trying to tick us off.

The best thing for Fox would be to give Tom Rothman the boot already.

As long as Fox holds the rights, the movie will be mired by studio executives.

Also, it is WAY too early for a FF reboot. This whole reboot business is getting out of hand.

It might work if they do it a la Hulk, just recasting and stuff... For a new origin story, yeah, it's way too early...

What the heck is wrong with you people? Most of you just pointed out that the issues with the movies had to do with a weak director, a weak cast, and weak writing.

The studio's involvement or lack of involvement wasn't directly what was wrong with the last two movies and they're certainly trying to at least make up for it by rebooting the series.

We should at least stay somewhat optimistic until we have something better to go on.

I don't mind reboots but when it's done for the wrong reasons (I still don't trust Fox/copying Iron Man) or if it's saturating the market (like remakes..samething) then I'm against it.

Yeah and who was ultimately responsible for signing off on that weak cast, weak director and weak writing two times over?

They're not trying to make up for anything. They're trying to keep the rights of a potentially viable property.

I'll save my optimism for when Fox gives me a reason to believe that their next foray into this genre won't be a half-assed, underdeveloped, micromanaged effort.

Maybe you're right though. Seeing Fox attached to a comic flick is cause for nothing less than unbridled optimism and joy. People just woke up one morning and decided to lambast the studio for no good reason at all.
:facepalm , indeed.

personally Chiklis was the only decent thing about the films, he's perfect for the thing

Fox exec #1: So, how can we **** film number 3 up.

Fox exec #2: Hmmm...

Fox exec #3: :lightbulb: I know, let's reboot and **** it up the same way we did before.

Fox execs 1, 2, and 3: :word:

imo, Charlize Theron or Elizabeth Banks look like and could star as invisible woman

the whole cast was good except for Alba who cant act her way outta a paper bag, but damn is she some good eye candy...but if I want a movie for eye candy I would just go watch porn. That being said idk who they should cast Elizabeth Banks would be good.. I though Evans as Torch and Chiklis as Thing would be great

I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no way whatshisface who played Doom could be considered good. I could maybe, maybe, see how someone could see Ioan as good, but that other guy? No.

I really feel like they need wait on this. Hollywood's gotten to point where they keep redoing everything because they screwed up the first time, but now it's getting tiresome.

I'm glad in an post Iron Man/Dark Knight world, a movie like Tim Story's Fantastic four can not be made because standards have risen. Hell, if Star Trek and Terminator Salvation are good, then the modern day summer movies finally have some quality control.

But you can't keep on rebooting movie recklessly. People WILL get sick of it.
