I do believe the concerns that the FF will take a backseat to the Silver Surfer in terms of marketing are valid. But to be honest...they have to at this point. If the first film had hit it out of the park this reverse marketing strategy wouldn't be necessary. But it is.
I look at it this way:
Remember Mariah Carey's 1996 hit "Fantasy"? When her squeaky-clean pop career was starting to falter, she did something daring: For that song she collaborated with a rap artist named Old Dirty Bastard (A.K.A. "ODB"). At the time this was revolutionary...unorthodox. Nevertheless, she married her pop/soul sound with the popular hip hop vibe and the result breathed new life into her career. She then secured an even stronger R&B/Hip Hop audience due to those rap "features" and now has complete crossover appeal as music's biggest selling female artist in history (with the most No. 1 singles too).
I see the FF2 film doing something similar. Silver Surfer is their "ODB"--the revolutionary "cool" factor they need to regenerate interest in the Fantastic Four's faltering public image. He is
absolutely necessary for this film to be a success. In of themselves, the Four are simply not that interesting to some people--and that goes for the comics as well.
That's why their books ALWAYS feature characters like the Watcher, the Inhumans, other Marvel heroes, Dr. Doom, etc. It's their dynamic with these other characters that makes the FF appealing.
And those characters were also on their front covers...so why should it be any different in the films?

And you know what? I understand where you are coming from....I would simply like to see more of a balance....hell even 30% FF 70% SS on the promotion would be fine with me....

I GET THAT.......helllo......hence the example I gave of a movie poster.....I'M FINE WITH THE SS BEING ON THE FREAKING ONE-SHEET.....lol The Silver Surfer IS ON THE ONE SHEET EXAMPLE......
I'm not saying a balance of 100% F4, haven't said that yet...
Nor even a 70% FF 30% SS.......YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES use the SS in promotion....YES..............................good promotion tactic.....
I would have loved to have seen a Superbowl teaser with the Silver Surfer flying over the Super Bowl slowing down, and wondering what the hell all of those people were doing watching guys throw a football around and slap each other's butts......
YES, use the Silver Surfer, but not at the expense of the 4 main characters.....it is time for alittle of them as well.....
I'm HOPING that we begin to see that.....
And let me say this.....
*Had the first movie "hit it out of the park" as you say......I would still understand marketing the Silver Surfer......HE IS COOOLLL....to a summer audience for a summer blockbuster....YOU MARKET COOLNESS that is a huge DUUUUUHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is simply time for alittle Fantastic Four in my opinion.
)It's all about removing the cheap cornball image the first left and replacing it with a cool and epic vibe,it's slight of hand marketing.
