Exclusive: The Plane, The Plane...Eddie Murphy to Star in Columbia's Remake of the "Fantasy Island!"
Written by Robert Sanchez
Wednesday, 07 March 2007
Eddie Murphy is set to star in a fresh new big screeen remake of the "Fantasy Island" made famous in the 70's and early 80's by Ricardo Montalban and Herv? Villechaize.

Norbit writers, Jay Scherick and David Ronn, have been brought aboard for a re-write and Eddie Murphy is expected to play several roles in the film a la Nutty Proffesor and Norbit. No word on a director or any other cast members at this time.

Prior to the long-running original series, Fantasy Island was introduced to viewers in 1977 through two highly-rated made-for-television films in which Mr. Roarke and Tattoo played relatively minor roles. Airing from 1978 to 1984, the original series starred Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke, the enigmatic overseer of a mysterious island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean (presumably near Hawaii) where people from all walks of life could come and live out their fantasies ? for a price.

Roarke was known for his white suit and cultured demeanor, and he was initially accompanied by an energetic sidekick, Tattoo, played by the diminutive Herv? Villechaize, who ran up the main bell tower to ring the bell and shout "The plane! The plane!" to announce the arrival of a new set of guests at the beginning of each episode. This line, shown at the beginning of the show's credits, became an unlikely catchphrase thanks to Villechaize's spirited delivery and French accent (he actually pronounced it, "De plane! De plane!"). In later seasons, he would come down to drive in his personal go cart, sized for him, and recklessly drive to join Roarke for the visitor reception while staff scramble to get out of his way.

And goodbye Eddie Murphy's Oscar nomination clout.

I think Eddie Murphy's dreams of saving his career will become a fantasy.

This will be as successful as the Honeymooners with Cedric the Entertainer.

Yep...they did the Honeymooners with Cedric the Entertainer...so sure, why not Eddie Murphy in Fantasy Island?! :whatever:

Damn Hollywood.

Hey, anyone remember the creepy remake Fantasy Island TV show with Malcom McDowell as Roarke? It wasn't nearly as happy, with a lot of "careful what you wish for" messages. Like a Twilight Zone Lite. Weird, but interesting.

-- END!

it's surreal looking at the state of Hollywood very recently.

it's as if they want the business to drop off.

Well its not working, considering how well the B.O. (as a whole) has been doing the past few weeks....

Don't remind me.:cmad:

You thinking the movie looks like crap is unimportant. The movie was made for kids and kids will go see it. End of story. Don't be surprised if Shrek 3 ends up being one of the top 5 grossing films of 2007.

but the jokes seem more like there for adults though.

The Shrek films have stuff for both kids and their parents.

The long running ABC series Fantasy Island is being reconstituted as a feature film by Blumhouse and Sony Pictures, the latter of which controls the rights to the Aaron Spelling series which ran from 1977-84. Jeff Wadlow is directing. He just teamed with Blumhouse on Truth Or Dare, the genre film that grossed $100 million worldwide on a $5 million budget.

The series definitely went into some supernatural areas including an episode with the devil.

I assume Eddie is no longer attached. I am not a huge horror guy so I haven't paid attention to Blumhouse projects closely. Is this the first time they have tackeda preexisting IP?

Blumhouse, huh?

Seems to be a bit more recently. Halloween I believe is their first with Spawn coming next and now this just being announced.

Hehe...no and I like Pena ( well, I only know him from Antman ).
