It was reported back in April that Universal was interested in getting Eva Mendes to reprise the role of agent Monica Fuentes in the upcoming Fast & Furious 8, and now it appears that the star’s involvement is almost a done deal. A source close to the production tells We Got This Covered that the current plot of the eighth film actually hinges on her character, who played a significant role in 2 Fast 2 Furious and cameoed in Fast Five, and it’s pretty much a sure thing that Mendes will sign on.

Our source asked to remain anonymous, and their connection to the project is solid enough that we feel comfortable respecting that. They say that Fuentes will be teaming up with Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and the rest of the gang to take on a new villain in the Big Apple. Additionally, conversations about Helen Mirren and Jason Statham both playing villainous roles in the pic, are still taking place, with the latter reprising the role of Deckard Shaw from Furious 7. Our source wouldn’t confirm that either is definitely signed on, but that their names are still coming up as the octoquel continues to develop does lend validity to the possibility of their involvement.

As for newcomers to the franchise, Universal is apparently looking to cast a young Hispanic actor in the role of a racer with a close relationship to Fuentes. Tommy Hatto was at one point in consideration for that part, though it’s unclear if he still is. That young actor hasn’t done much, but he had a small part in Thor: The Dark World and previously worked with Mendes when he auditioned for the lead role in How to Catch a Monster. He was also on the red carpet at the premiere of Fast & Furious 6, though he was not involved with that film. Our source says that his name has come up more than once, but Universal hasn’t locked down anyone for the part he’s being considered for.

At this point, only Diesel, Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson are absolutely certain to reprise their roles. But with the story taking shape around Fuentes, it’s great to hear that the actress is on the cusp of signing on, if she hasn’t already.

Helen Mirren needs to play the mother of Deckard and Owen Shaw.

Eva Mendes returning? I can't remember her cameo in Fast 5. The New York setting should be interesting though, could see some more packed ind riving sequences if they shoot in the city, I also see Dom doing something crazy off the statue of Liberty. :D.

It will be weird seeing one of these movies without Paul Walker.

Man, I knew they'd try to get Jaume Collet-Serra.:down

I guess my top choice, aside from Lin or Wan, would be Rob Cohen.

Not Cohen. They should get Tarantino. He'd give it an old school Bullitt vibe.

Eh, Universal would have Tarantino on such a tight creative leash that he wouldn't enjoy himself.

No on Leitch and Stahelski, they're gonna be busy with John Wick 2 and Coldest City.

I'd say John Hyams if his next movie is done before they're ready to go. Maybe Scott Mann who made this upcoming film:

Hate to say it but this series should end now especially if you cant attract a director even after a 1.5 billion movie. If the vin reports are true this series is even more doomed and vin should know better given his career was dead before coming back to this franchise.

theres only one director that I think can do it justice.

Scott Waugh. Director of "Need for speed"

I listened to the commentary and he seemed like he knew what he was doing

Collider says that Chad Stahelski is directing John Wick 2 solo, with David Leitch staying on only as executive producer. Both Stahelski and Leitch were being offered a number of projects. Obviously, I'm hoping Leitch jumped ship to direct Fast 8.

I mean honestly, just being real, whoever they get to direct is just going to be doing the same thing that Lin did in 5/6.

I dont think the director matters much for this franchise. I doubt whatever director they pick will make a radically different movie.

They have a set tone/style to these movies now. The John Wick duo, or at least one of those guys will be cool, but I doubt it'll make much of a difference.

Get the guys who did the Crank movies.
Dear god no, those guys are awful and they aren't remotely mainstream. Not saying that the series is high-art but Universal can do much, much better and such a successful series is nothing but mainstream.

I think that it'd be kind of cool if they gave a female director a shot this time around.
