Fattest man in the world...is British?!?!

Overeat every day of your life and you will get to his weight. Anyways, I feel sad for the guy but he built the bed he is lying in and therfore he suffers the consequences of his choices.

I'm sad because I eat.... and I eat because I'm sad...

It's a vicious cycle...

or maybe someone could stop bring him the damn deep freid twinkies, and give him a salad instead....

I went into a really deep depression for 3 years and went from 180 to 450lbs without even realizing it. I just woke up one day and went ... Damn!

While horrible I can understand how it can happen. I was just lucky enough to snap out of it before it got that far.

did that extra helping of spaggetti you ate, really help your depression, or make it worse over time

Obviously it did a lot more damage then good as now I have to lose all that weight. I'm down to 266 but I still have about 70 pounds to go. It's taken two years to get to this point.

I hope he reinforced the frame.

I’ve rarely met anyone as overwhelmingly unhappy as Britain’s fattest man, 70-stone Paul Mason.

His house in Ipswich was filled with a bleak feeling of sadness and despair when I interviewed him in 2006.

Then, at 47-stone, he still clung to the belief that he could lose at least some of the bulk that kept him confined to his specially-made bed.
But even then – at only around two thirds of his current weight – he knew that his over-eating had irreversibly destroyed his body and he would never be able to walk unaided again, or live anything approaching a normal life.

He told me that he was trying to find love using the internet, but confessed that women, like society, shunned him because of his size.
He spoke honestly and candidly about the awfulness of his day to day life, crying as he explained that he was unable to wash himself and relied on his mother to bring him his regular takeout meals.

Heartbreakingly he was actively encouraging people to feel disgusted by his lifestyle in a courageous attempt to force young people, who he cared passionately about, to reassess their unhealthy habits as a result of his cautionary tale.

I’m in no doubt that Paul would have loved to lose the weight, but each time he tried it caused him even more unhappiness when it eventually, and almost inevitably, failed.

So instead he turned to food, both his best and worst friend, for comfort, and the vicious cycle continued.

Whole lotta fail right here, so he was unhappy about his weight 23 stone ago and wanted to get healthier. Here's a suggestion, no more takeout, have you mother prepare you better foods. Start doing whatever exercises you can at that weight and gradually change the exercise as you lose weight to more active exercises. I've seen a bunch of friends who were overweight lose it and they're much happier, the more came off the happier and more confident they got. The thing is though, they made concious lifestyle changes, they didn't go on a diet or just try some new trendy exercise program. I'd be really curious what he did to try and lose the weight and how long it actually lasted, at his weight then, it was going to take a lot of hard work and dedication, if it was just a week to a month or something, then that's not really trying.

You're only free to say those things because you don't know what it's like to live in a country where you pay heavy taxes on things like national health. It isn't fair that taxpayers should have to pay for someone who let themselves get this unhealthy. The blind, deaf, etc. Do not fall into this category at all.

Maybe when national health comes to the US some of you guys will realize why the rest of us stress about lazy guys like this.

He probably has a slew of underlying medical issues that cause his excessive eating and weight gain. It is very difficult for someone to literally eat themselves into weighing a ton. Not that it matters, he's a living person and he shouldn't be denied healthcare as such.

Yes there is medical conditions that can be attributed to obesity.

But no way in hell are they the sole cause of this guy getting to 70 stone. It is sheer, utter gluttony and laziness. Simple as that.

Why should he be given the easy way out? Why should he have to put ZERO effort into slimming down himself? Why should he put ZERO effort into taking care of himself? But the tax payer does?

There are obese people out there who are putting real efforts in to get healthy and to lose weight. But na it's ok for this guy not to bother, the government and the tax payers will do it for him? That's ********.

And it's not just the actual operation the taxpayers will pay for, it's transporting him, paying for specialist equipment like a reinforced operating table, things like that. It's a disgrace.

Those life-threatening things are most likely accidents. This man saw himself getting fatter and fatter every day and still kept on doing what he was doing. I don't see how this is the same.

It is NOTHING like those things.

They would be caused by accidents. Plus those people are healthy enough to work, thusly, pay taxes. This guy doesn't contribute to the country AT ALL.

Not years upon years upon years upon years upon years upon years of sheer, utter gluttony and laziness.

.

It is ultimatley the same because you are still advocating the refusal of medical care due to a lifestyle choice. People who have risky hobbies often have no other reason to do them except for fun. Yet they can-and do-suffer catastrophic injuries because of them. You can't randomly single out obseity as something to which care can be refused. If your reasoning is "he did it to himself", then musicians who experience hearing loss should be refused any care for their ears..smokers should be refused any cardiovascular care..And someone who fell down the steps at the football/soccer/basketball game? By your reasoning, the hospital should be able to test their blood for alcohol or pot and if it's present, the person should be refused care. After all, they didn't need to do that stuff, right?

Again, it is nothing like those things.

Comparing falling down the stairs at a football/basketball game to a guy who has for years, eaten and eaten and eaten and eaten and eaten is utterly ridiculous.

And through this guys sheer gluttony and laziness, he hasn't contributed to the country with taxes via work.

It sets a bad example. "Hey don't work, don't pay taxes! You'll still get help from the government!"

This is the worst American defeat ever. :(

Seriously, this guy is lazy f***ing pig. Why keep him alive? He doesn't have the disease that makes you fat, so it's his problem for being the real life Jabba the Hutt.

this is some good stuff. I could use this for my obesity speech on Friday.

What is ridiculous is that you guys think that this guy's life has no value. As I said in previous posts, you can't single out morbid obesity out as a condition not worthy of treatment without opening pandora's box. Every day, ERs all over the world treat people who are partially or fully responsible for their conditions. Health care professionals don't make judgment calls. They treat the sick, period. If they adopted a "only the worthy get help" approach, that could be applied to a plethora of conditions, including accidents.

Nationalized Healthcare needs some fixes, that's forsure.... but, would it be a bad thing if

to qualify you have to be one of these

1) Under the age of 18
2) In school full time
3) Working either full time, or over 25 hours a week
4) Disabled
5) Unemployed (you get 18 months of healthcare before it stops, but when you employed you pay extra taxes to make up for the time you had healthcare)
6) Your retired
7) Military
This guy is disabled, no question about it.

I KNOW! The man can't get out of bed! It's the people taking care of him who are bringing him food, and some of the responsibility has to be on them for giving up 20,000 calories to eat! Seriously! Do none of them keep a little spreadsheet or whatever, so it's not like, "Hmm, how many family-size takeaways has Mr. Mason had today? One? Two? None? Oh wells, let's just bring another for good measure."

He does, it's called overeating. There's a hormone that your stomach releases to let you know whether you've had enough food, and apparently this guy doesn't have it if he can down 20,000 calories in a day and not feel full.

He should have been put in a clinic 500lbs pound ago. If nothing else was a red flag, immobility should have been. There was no reason to let it go this long.

Really?!?! You're making excuses for someone who overate to weighing almost half a ton! The guy isn't a child if mom brings you three or four meals a day, maybe don't eat them, maybe you should ask mom to give you a salad instead. As for him having a disease, BS, use some self control, this past year I've trained for two marathons and my hunger became enormous, I often stepped away from the breakfast, lunch and/or dinner table still hungry, but knowing I ate enough. Obviously the exercise burned off the calories, but I still had to show self control so I didn't overeat. I don't know, first day I woke up and couldn't see my d!ck I'd start to make some changes.

It's certainly not a contagious disease, but he likely has a medical condition that makes it much easier for him to overeat. I'm not him, but I can easily imagine how it could be like an addiction, and making people stop smoking or doing heroin certainly isn't as easy as just telling them to stop doing it.

I'm not making excuses, but sometimes people can't help themselves, so they need supportive people around them. Obviously this guy was SEVERELY lacking in them. He was able to get away with paying for so much food because his mom mortgaged her house. He's pathetic for having his mom do that. That's more pathetic than eating yourself to a half-ton - bankrupting your mother to feed your addiction. It's no different that someone stealing from friends and family to feed a drug addiction.

Not everyone has your kind of dedication and self-restraint. In fact, very few people do. That's what makes you special. :oldrazz:

I'm underweight. I can eat whatever I want and don't gain weight. (I'm physically incapable of overeating as much as that guy, though I can eat whatever I want. Pff at salads, yay for second helpings.) But I certainly don't expect everyone else around me to be able to look the same as I do even if they starve themselves.

Ace does bring up a good point though...

In our society down here in Australia, if you aren't looking for work youaren't entitled to unemployment benefits... So, should a man who has done nothing to improve the state of his own health be entitled to healh benefits..?

Perhaps a Government run fat camp for people who are serious about taking steps to improve their own health when they are morbidly obese would be a good way of improving the health of citizens, reducing the need for surgery in the morbidly obese and provide additional jobs for physical trainers and nutritionists...?

If such a thing existed it would be a lot more acceptable to the general public if people like this man who has done next to nothing to improve his situation from being denied surgery (or even better, from ever reuiring surgery)...

See THAT is a great idea Hound.

Fatties want help from their Government? Go on a Government funded health program. Not expect a REALLY expensive operation because you're too lazy and greedy to stay healthy.

I wouldn't run it by itself either for economic reasons.

If I were to bring it in to Australia I'd run it at the same time as a 30-33% rebate on hiring persoal trainers to alleviate pressure on the government run option.

That should make it more viable for the middle classes to take better care of themselves and in turn alleviate pressure on the health care system as a whole, and the midle classes are a major target group in this day and age when it comes to building a high uality society...

Less health issues, less economic issues, less crime... improves everything.

WOW! 70 ****ing stone!

This guy costs the taxpayer 100k a year. And to give him the operation on the NHS that he "needs" will cost the taxpayer more.

Don't mean to be harsh, but I say **** him.

The NHS is a great service...but they need to stop giving out free operations and medical attention to people like this. It should only go to people who REALLY need it, like cancer sufferers and the like.

Not lazy, greedy fat bastards who have no one else to blame but themselves.

Thoughts.

Too many Jaffa cakes :(
