Hey all! I was thinking about the interrogation scene and the last conversation between Batman and the Joker while he was hanging upside down and was wondering if anyone can recall their favorite or memorable conversations or exchanges between them in the comics in the same vein.

Obviously Killing Joke at the end when they both start laughing...I also like in GCPD Soft Target the fact that Batman and Joker never do actually meet.

I liked that but only because I hated it so much. It was cool seeing Batman so...I don't know, broken in the moment. But then, I was totally on Barbara's side later on in an issue of Showcase when he visits her in the hospital and she is so hurt by the fact that, after what The Joker did to her, Batman could stand around laughing with him. I rarely hate Batman, but I did then.

Its gotta be when Joker and Batman start laughing at the end of the Killing Joke, one of my favourite panels in comic history

Not with Batman, but still a nice one:

*some days after the death of Jason Todd*

BATMAN: I'm giving you one last chance. Return to Arkham Asylum and turn yourself in.

JOKER: And if I don't? what are you going to do about it...let your assistant handle it?

I'd have loved to have seen your face when you found what was left of the brat! Set you off the deep end, did it? you see, even a madman can add 2 plus 2...

BATMAN: And come up with 5.

JOKER: Or maybe you're glad to be rid of the little darling.

BATMAN: You always know exactly the wrong thing to say don't you?

JOKER: That's what makes me so special.

I've got to mention the exchange between Batman and the Joker at the end of Book Three of The Dark Knight Returns. Though some people aren't crazy about it, I personally love the way Miller writes the Joker. And his last words are the perfect capper to the buildup throughout DKR:

"They'll kill you for this...and they'll never know...that you didn't have the nerve...I'll...see you...in hell."

I thought that everything about that scene was great, right down to Batman's goodbye to the Joker.

It's not exactly an exchange, but...

In Lovers and Madmen, when Jack/The Joker first sees Batman trying to

"Working so hard to undo all my plans. He looks like he'd never stop punching for the rest of his life. He looks ridiculous."

Something about that quote so perfectly captures the two of them, their relationship...

From The Joker's Five Way Revenge

Batman: "Just answer me one question, Joker?"

Joker: "For You Anything!"

Batman: "Why use a shark as an instrument for revenge?"

Joker: "Take a look...we resemble each other!"

From The Laughing Fish

Batman: "There's no where you can go Joker!"

Joker: "I can go over your dead body, Batman!"

From THE KILLING JOKE

Joker: Why can't you see the joke, why aren't you laughing!

Batman: "Because I heard it before..and it wasn't funny the first time!"

i agree with ^Dirt-Like-Me, that final exchange was so dark and haunting, i think it could have been one of the best scenes Miller ever wrote in a comic book (which is saying something). It was better that any Joker-Batman dialogue in TDK IMO, (and i loved TDK).

Giving the Joker a fitting, worthy death would be no easy feat, but Miler-boy pulled it off. I think giving Joker a "death" would be much harder and riskier than giving him an "origin" like Alan Moore did, and Miller deserves more credit for that scene alone.
