It's been on Congress' hit list for a while as well as a few other states who want a cheap, easy target to strike so they can appear to be doing something. In the process they also repealed part of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which acts as a federal shield for websites so they can justify their actions.

Whether you agree with the reasoning, it's the collateral damage that is most concerning at this point.
