Hey man, I know you've been taking a break. That's just me being melancholy and melodramatic.
I notice your Randy Newman sig there. Do you know his stuff from a little known movie called Avalon? Great stuff. Just tear your heart out score.
I have that score, sure. Beautiful stuff. I think the only one I'm missing is "The Natural."
I first heard Randy Newman when the Norman Lear movie "Cold Turkey" (starring Dick Van Dyke) was broadcast on CBS around 1973.
Newman's sad, atheistic anthem "He Gives Us All His Love" was used on the opening credits. I was only 8, so I didn't understand satire, but I loved the music and the voice. Timeless.
The next time I saw him was on "Saturday Night Live" in 1977 doing "Short People." Amazing how many people took a satirical song about prejudice so seriously. I picked up the LP of "Little Criminals" and gradually collected everything else he'd done.
I'm glad he's enjoyed such great success writing film scores the past 20 years, but I sure wish he'd released just a few more regular albums. After 1988's "Land of Dreams," that was it for a looong time. "Bad Love" came out in 1999, and who knows if there will be any more.
I was glad to see him finally win an Academy Award after so many nominations.
There's a new song of his on YouTube called "A Few Words In Defense of Our Country." It's pretty tough, but it's classic Newman.

The lyrics ran as a New York Times Op-Ed piece, I believe.
And one of the most moving Newman songs I've ever heard/seen was this PBS tribute to Fred Rogers that uses Bonnie Raitt's version of "Feels Like Home To Me" from Newman's "Faust" album.
It will absolutely tear your heart right out:

To keep this on topic, I did once hear Randy Newman mention that he enjoyed Marvel comics in his youth.
