Firestarter remake

In the Fade is pretty good. Firestarter should be much easier to adapt than Winter's Tale (which is superb but completely un-cinematic). Maybe this will be okay.

Was the original Firestarter film any good? Or should I just stick to the book.

I remember liking it, but I haven't seen it in a long while.

Ditto. I remember liking it at the time but it didn't make much of a lasting impression.

Edit: Okay, just looked it up and I see George C. Scott was in it. I had no memory of that whatsoever.

I'm a fan of the original, Barrymore is great in it, and so is George S Scott. It plays pretty safe with the book (though Rainbird is described to be more Native American than Scott actually is, lol), so it doesn't deviate from the book, but knowing John Carpenter was originally attached, and him losing the job because The Thing bombed, I realize it could've been a better movie. The Tangerine Dream score is great and I still listen to it. Interested in an updated adaption.

Akiva's name attached has me nervous though.

Considering what he did with The Dark Tower chances are that Firestarter will turn out be some generic drivel more inspired by various YA-literature and superhero-movies than King's novel. I hope I'm wrong and I wish could be more optimistic, but...

Considering he's neither the writer nor the director anymore, plus with Blumhouse's decent track record, I think there's a good chance of avoiding anything like The Dark Tower.

This is also a much less challenging piece to adapt in the first place.

I would've thought Lost In Space and Batman weren't super challenging pieces to adapt, but look what he did lol.

It is much easier knowing he's not penning it.

Stephen King's Firestarter Reboot Director Teases What to Expect in New Film

Adaptations of author Stephen King's films have often been a success at the box office, with so much time having passed since some of his more iconic adaptations allowing new filmmakers to put their own spin on the subject matter, as director Keith Thomas recently shared his excitement about his new take on King's Firestarter. Rather than being a remake of the previous film, the upcoming project merely marks a new take on the source material, with Thomas claiming that he was looking forward to doing something "new" with the story, while also promising that fans will see all the telekinetic mayhem they would expect from the endeavor.

"It’s a new adaptation of the book," Thomas shared with Zavvi. "When [producer] Jason [Blum] pitched it to me it was exciting, as that’s one of my favorite Stephen King novels, and whilst I really like the 1980s film, I felt we could do something new. The screenplay is by Scott Teems who wrote the upcoming Halloween Kills, it’s an amazing script. It has everything you would want; people’s heads catching fire and their faces melting off, and a dad and daughter on the run trying to survive being chased in this heightened tense experience. We are hoping to film it this year, and it will be a lot of fun."

While King himself typically keeps his distance from adaptations of his work, Thomas confirmed, "He watched The Vigil, approved me as director, and he read the script from the early stages, and he’s very happy with it. He’s excited for it, he’s there the whole way."

Is he the father? I hope Efron has a similar trajectory that Pattinson has.

I can't say he's how I pictured the dad, but okay.

Efron doesn’t have Pattinson’s range. He’s like Channing Tatum in that he’s only as good as the director he works with.

That said, he kind of fits perfect as the father role for this. He has a David Keith vibe.

Really curious to see who plays John Rainbird.

He just did a Stephen King thing, but I feel like Zahn McClarnon wouldn’t be a bad choice.

Keith Thomas Talks Firestarter Remake

Keith Thomas talked to ComicBook.com about his upcoming remake of Firestarter and it looks like it will be a bit different than the original.

“It’s something I’ve thought a lot about. And, certainly, when [Firestarter] first came to me, I was very lucky in that the script by Scott Teems, who wrote the upcoming Halloween Kills, was just very, very good, and very rich. The material itself isn’t different, right? I mean, it’s the same book that this film is drawing from, the one the earlier film did. But what we’re leaning into from the book is different. That’s the angle where you can do something. So, for me, it was really leaning into more emotional aspects. It was leaning into parenthood and what that looks like, and then, how do you raise a child, especially a child with abilities like this. That was the place the script went and I thought that it was something that’s a little different than the original film.”

“Also, the book’s super-rich. There’s a lot of stuff that’s in the book that isn’t in the original film. There’s stuff in there that we’re using, that we’re going into. At the same time, I feel like, just for me, in terms of the films I’m interested in, I feel like there’s a visceral quality to the story that I didn’t see in the ’80s version, a rawness that I think is there in the book, that I certainly felt, that I’m really interested in diving into. And, luckily, I think everybody else involved feels the same way, that this is going to be … not only will it have the effects and you’re going to get to see all the stuff Charlie can do, which is fun, and cool, and exciting, but if we do it right, it’s not so much as dark as The Vigil, but you should come out of it emotionally. If you do it right, it’s going to really hit that way.”

“The screenplay is by Scott Teems who wrote the upcoming Halloween Kills, it’s an amazing script. It has everything you would want; people’s heads catching fire and their faces melting off, and a dad and daughter on the run trying to survive being chased in this heightened tense experience.”

Firestarter Remake Starts Filming In June?
Posted: April 13, 2021, 15:44:34
According to Screen Rant the remake of Firestarter might begin filming this June. The information comes from an interview with producer Akiva Goldsman. Here is what he said:

Firestarter is one of the last great, either unmade or un-remade, Stephen King novels that have become classics. There are things I will never forget from the original movie. But it diverged from the book significantly. So Scott Teems — who is a really wonderful writer — wrote this terrific script which is much closer to the novel in both incident and tone. We start shooting, I want to say, in 12 weeks. Firestarter was always some of Stephen's most intimate and affective horror, and I think pyrokinesis is a really fascinating idea when it comes to the expression of hidden feeling
