Has The First Draft Of The Avengers Been Completed?

As much fun as Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America should be as individual films, comic book fans have been waiting years for the granddaddy of them all: The Avengers. Many have expressed qualms about the film's prospects, fearing the possibility that such a crowded field will take away from the story, and have labeled it unfilmable. If done right, however, it has the potential to blow us all away, giving us the some of the greatest superhero characters of all time on the same screen. We are still two years away from the project, good or bad, but this latest development makes it feel so much closer.

Taking to his Twitter account, Joe Quesada, editor in chief of Marvel comics, tweeted:

"Definition of 'goose bumps.' Pressing enter and watching a screenplay entitled "AVENGERS" come out of my printer."

Less than a minute later, he said, "It's official, I have the greatest job in the world." Zak Penn, whose previous comic book movie experience ranges from X2 and The Incredible Hulk to Elektra and The Fantastic Four, has been attached to write the project for some time now, but this is the first announcement that has suggested that the script has been completed.

Unless we are reading this entirely wrong, this is huge news for the future of the Marvel film franchise, which now has solid footing past next summer's releases. Sure, it is probably only a draft and will undoubtedly go through some, if not many, rewrites, but physical form now exists for a screen version of one of the greatest team-ups in comics history. Up until now, the only insight to the writing process has been Penn saying, "It's hard to make a good movie. We all have the best intentions, and it still might suck," but that was almost nine months ago. We can hope that he has gotten something resembling courage and confidence since then and will bring us the Avengers film we all want.

Awesome if True. This means the film is possibly gaining momentum.

My guess is that the basics of the movie will revolve around the ultimates where all the team has to stop the hulk from destroying manhattan

This is really good news because it means they have ample time to begin polishing and ensuring that the script is good. So we know for sure we not gonna get a rushed movie.

I'm hoping for a Loki led (or manipulated) Hydra with Abomination as a secret weapon.

That's damned exciting. Predicting the obvious Loki-manipulated Hulk. I mean, they pretty much HAVE to do it, right? This is very cool to see coming together though.

If they can De-***hole the Ultimates, I'd be okay with a first movie based around Ultimates 1.

I have to say, I think that's the best villain idea I've heard yet. That concept would setup a great (and classic) main villain, with lots of henchman and finally a physical threat that is definitely powerful enough to take on the whole team.

I really hope they don't take the "Ultimates" route with this movie, villain-wise, because I'm a huge Hulk fan and I think it's kind of insulting to the character to paint him as the bad guy when the Hulk storyline has spent so much time trying to prove that he isn't. A Loki-manipulated Hulk could work (as in the first Avengers story), but I think it would be important for Hulk eventually turn against Loki and side with the heroes.

No matter how you go about it, if Hulk is in the movie at some point he's going to get out of hand and they're going to have to fight him. It may be a short fight but it'll happen one way or the other.

Aside from Iron Man, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and Thor, who else is confirmed to be part of the Avengers? I mean in this film, at least.

Either way, I am very excited that a draft came in. More time to polish it.

Brian Michael Bendis updated his twitter again:

"spent the entire day reading the Avengers screenplay instead of writing the Avengers comic."

I personally want this to be based off of "traditional" Avengers no Ultimate tie ins at all (save for Nick Fury) and would sure like to see Avengers villains like Ultron or Kang...wish Marvel had the film rights to Doom....

True, that goes hand-in-hand with the nature of the character. Personally, I like the idea that some people have put out, that the Avengers' first "mission" after they get together could be the capture of the Hulk, while the real threat is still building itself up in the background. Could make for a great scene.

The thing I'm opposed would be the Ultimates approach where Hulk is the actual villain of the piece, which is the same route that the Ultimate Avengers DVD took. I guess I'm just crossing my fingers that they don't do it that way.

Why not?

I may be in the minority, but in order to bring together a team like this, the threat needs to be huge. I mean HUGE.

Fighting Hulk and only Hulk would be lame for many reasons.

The threat needs to be big, bigger than what even Thor or Hulk alone would be able to handle.

i think they'll team up against a loki-influenced hulk, just to get them together, but the hulk will join them for the end. cos

a: it's an epic battle that's been done many times, but people still ask for more (iron man, thor, cap, hulk? wow)

and

b: hulk gets redemption in the end, so we're not destroying the character.

You want to know what I find intriguing..... yesterday the 1st draft of The Avengers gets turned in then today Marvel Buys the domain name for the ant man movie. Maybe I'm thinking too much into this but could this possibly be due to Ultron being the big baddie in The Avengers thus them moving forward with Ant-Man to introduce Ultron?

I always thought the storyline of The Avengers would turn out to be Avengers taking on a Loki-brainwashed Hulk (second act) followed by the entire group going against Loki and some frost giants or something (climax).

But then Loki and the frost giants are turning out to be the villains of the Thor movie. They wouldn't be that BIG of a villain that you'd need all of the Avengers if Thor/Sif/Warriors Three could take them out in Thor.

I'm thinking maybe Hulk will be like the "big boss" at the end of the movie and the beginning and middle part of the movie will revolve around some other Loki-inspired villains.

The Leader? They hinted at it in TIH.
Abomination is still around.
If they're really doing Ant-Man, Ultron would be a possibility as someone stated.
I can't see them doing an alien invasion in this movie. I don't think there's enough time in one movie to introduce a Skrull concept and put the team together. I'd rather save that invasion concept for the sequel and really go all out, basically the Ultimates level carnage on the big screen.

Wait, isn't that for Captain America, though?

Yeah, and it isn't referring to a draft, but a plot synopsis from a casting website

Yeah, weird place to put that news, C. Lee.

Can't wait for it to be "leaked". :o
