I was not going to comment on this but going to leave my 2 cents. I get the feeling from this critic, that yes he is aware of the 1968-1980 character of Tony Stark, not much more beyond that. And to that point, that is okay. Most of the people going to see the film may well never have even heard of Tony Stark, so wont have a clue on his past ( or could care less)
They are going to see a fun movie with action, comedy, and good character development, the same kind of thing that is selling so well on TV. Shows like Battlestar Galactica, as an example, where you are more interested in the characters than what is going on in the show itself.
Anyway, I felt this critic walked into this screening with the attitude
" well ! here we go again more super hero crap" Thus his comparisons to a lot of hero movies that did not do well. I felt from reading his comments that he realy did not want to like this film, and had some preconcieved ideas that it was just going to suck bad, and that RDJ would at best be okay. I think he was suprised and was at a loss to say why he did not dispise it, even though he would have liked to have hated it. So saying things like " predictable ending " are part of that. This would be the same kind of critic who would do a write up on the movie "Titanic" and say " well the ending is predictable " LOL yah we know the ship sinks, thanks.
He came out of seeing this movie wanting to tell the world " well here is !The latest super hero bomb of a movie ! " likly allready had some comments ready to roll before he even saw it. But saw it and changed his mind and made the comments that he did.
I will take bets with good money, that it will hit over $200 million in North America. I also think it will have a huge huge first opening day ( $55-60 million ) and huge first week ( $130-140 million ) . It will spawn off at least 2 sequels. After that I dont know, but it will do as well if not a lot better than the first Spiderman movie.
There will be similar reviews, but overall there will be some real knock out ones as well. It will be a winner, Marvel will be quite pleased, critics asside
