Meanwhile, we have Clark Kent as a unbelievable, clumsy, Inspector Clousea-style bungler and a Lex Luthor who is a camp, corny pantomime villain who marries old women for their money. These aren't common depictions of these characters - they're exclusive to the films originated by Richard Donner.

Uhm again, you can't discount the older comics because they don't fit your veiw. try picking up a Superman archives once in awhile. That was Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, and not they weren't "inventions of Richard Donner"

Jamal, you're going to have to tell me when in pre-crisis DC comics that had Luthor marrying some woman just to get at her wealth? Without a specific researchable example, I would think that's inaccurate information. you may currently be in the employ of DC Comics but I've been reading Supes since the early 60's and own a lot of the reprints from the earlier years and I don't remember EVER seeing that.

As to Clark the cowardly bungler ... it was useful when the characters at DC were in their infancy as were the comics of that time. I want to see Clark portrayed less like a clown and more believably. A bungler draws just as much attention as a Superman. A more acceptable version of Clark would be a very low key individual who tries not to draw too much attention to himself. Something that we actually had in the late 80's.

The absolute best interpretation of ALL of these characters can be found under the hands of Dini and Timm. Especially Jimmy, who was never intended in any medium to be a geek or nebbish. Taking Larson's Jimmy from the 50's and dropping him into the 21st century will certainly look like a geek but leaving him in his time period, he's just another teen/young adult of his day.

I get to see a press screening of SR tonight at 7:30PM tonight suckaaaaaaahs!!!!!!

wait, what foundation has been rewritten?

Jamal was speaking generically and so was I.

His basic comment is that you can't do a movie that closely mirrors the comics because the general public won't like it.

I say that a good story is a good story no matter what and if it works in the comics, chances are very good that it will work with general audiences.

It's been my belief right along that the general public has been underestimated by Hollywood. That they would 'get' superheroes if the material was presented faithfully and in an intelligent, semi-realistic fashion. At least have a logic to them that isn't totally farsical.

Here's a note: Humanoid life can't survive let alone evolve on a crystaline planet.

Here is a note..it is science fiction/fantasy....People can't really fly or have bullets bounce off of them among other things.

Very good reviews so far. The reviews all seem to suggest that this movie is gonna be cool. Also there seems to be sufficient action. I really enjoyed Ratner's XMen because of the amped up action. I was never a big fan of Singer's Xmen but I am really curious to see what he did with Superman.

GEE, Brad...

Thanks for clearing that up for me.. .that makes all the difference.

So, if I'm inferring correctly, no movie or book ever has to be believable because they're all fantasy on some level.

C'mon, Man.

Maybe that's enough of an explanation for you but it DOESN'T work for me. I can suspend disbelief to an extent but I can't go back to being 11 years old anymore. I need to see a Superman movie that spans the generation not caters to children. To span the generations, they need to be cognizant of the fact that some of us are going to look at crystaline Krypton and go ...'No friggin way!.

Now, I'm a Star Trek (Kirk & Spock) fan and I know that time travel is not possible and probably matter transportation isn't either but I'm willing to suspend disbelief because there are more things that operate logically and realistically in that universe than not. ... And - SURPRISE - kids liked it, too.

I want the same things from my superhero films.

No problem! Glad I could help!

When it comes to sci-fi fantasy I think so.

C'mon, Man.
Are we heading to the theater already? Cool!

Whats wrong with going back and feeling like a kid again...sounds great to me.
