I remember these. Never played, though.

I have some cards that I haven't touched in a while. Was always more of a Yu-Gi-Oh guy.

Also, I guess everything has to have a universe now....

Magic's had one as far back as...95 I think. They'd do 3 novels on one world, jump to a new one for 3 novels etc.

That's M'Lord to you! :argh:

Nah, I'll take WoW in 2016 instead. :sus

never played this, but I remember seeing it all over the place.....

heck, it's still around isn't it??

I like magical stuff, so this could be interesting.

I was in a Wal-Mart yesterday (yeah, I know... f*** Wal-Mart, but it's the only place I can find the protein brownies I like) and I saw a bunch of Magic stuff on a shelf. My first reaction was, "Wow, people still play that game," which was immediately followed by, "I wonder if they'll ever make that into a movie."

Only nerds played Magic the Gathering. And they didn't let me play with them.

Which is a sad true story. I bought a deck and tried to join in with some guys I knew who played it on the regular during Jr. High School lunch. When I presented them with my limp little starter deck they laughed and mocked my good intentions. I would've traded words with them, but they were GATE kids and I was well below their caste.

You should've just casted a spell on 'em, then. :word:

Forget words. Should have taken a broom handle...I mean the beating stick of Yawgmoth and made them rue the day they denied you epic card battles and revelry.

crazy

Magic was HUGE back when i was in 5th/6th grade. damn, this was back in 1995

i feel old :csad:

The card game is huge, bigger than it's ever been in fact. My buddies and I still drag out our old decks and play on occasion. I was never very serious about it but it's a lot of fun.

A film has definite potential, but it'll also be super easy to **** up. They certainly have huge amounts of lore to draw from, and the art is amazing so this could be visually spectacular as well.

I've always wished they'd just open a museum of all the artwork made for the cards over the years. Seriously they have employed the best people.

Give me a good Jace story, and I am in. The concept has vast potential.

It's like Dungeons & Dragons in that it's always there lurking in the shadows of mainstream popularity. Seemingly everyone says "people still play that?" and yet it's more popular than ever. Or so I keep hearing.

I've never played either D&D or M:TG and don't know off hand anyone who does but it still sells quite well and has a huge fanbase. I do know people who have played World of Warcraft and I played it myself for several years but then it's also more mainstream accepted which is why it's getting a movie first.

If I see a Phyrexian dreadnought on screen I may be able to die happy.

After LOTR/The Hobbit, Game of Thrones, and Warcraft, I don't know how much of market there is left for a fantasy series.

In the link given, we learn to know that Fox "will develop the property with an eye to launch a massive franchise on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings".
It's quite unnecessary to take on a new property to adapt and aiming for Potter/LOTR scale, as well as that audience. Especially when there are tons of adaptions of young adult novels that have been stuck in development hell for years and years: Septimus Heap, Wolf Brother, Airman, Shadowmancer, Leven Thumps, Sebastian Darke etc etc
I'm sure there are potential for success in these titles.

Yeah yeah, not all will make it to the top, but atleast a handful.

I used to love Magic...I still play Duels of the Planeswalker on PS3. I was one of the best card players in my area back in the day...Then I had to grow up and leave paper magic behind. Sold my best vintage deck back in 2003 for $300, now that deck is worth $4000

sigh...Happy to see a film though! But I think its too late now. With Warcraft coming too what is the point?

But the way the cards are built nowadays the storyline to make a film is easy...Make it around Planeswalkers....That is amazing.

Quick read on what they are...

Would love a film based on mages.

I hope WotC learned from DnD...it's strange how their Dungeons and Dragons brand encompasses Drizzt and Dragonlance (two series which seem to have appeal outside of the rpgers) yet neither of those novel lines were used for the film.

If they are going to do this right in terms of budget and creative, it has a real shot. The idea of the planeswalkers is so rich.

Jace = Main Protagonist
Lilliana Vess = Female Lead
Tezzeret = His Obi-Wan
Bolas = The Big Bad
Chandra = Because her design was made for film

I've been wanting a Dragonlance movie for years. I have to see Raistlin Majere on the big screen at some point

I take it you've read Agents of Artifice?

Here's my idea on how to do the first film. Set it in a down and dirty city where magical duels are controlled by a series of houses. One of the houses that sees Jace's research as a threat to their understanding of magic (As a means of spectacle and entertainment rather than a way of improving the world) destroys his life's work and brands him an outlaw. Jace is forced to flee into exile. He returns to the city for his revenge.

Tezzeret takes notice of Jace and, once Jace has taken revenge on the house that destroyed his research, offers him a place in the Interplanar Consortium. Then the second film can jump to Ravnica, where Jace has to prove himself to Tezzeret and come to grips with the brutality of his job. Jace would be working as a magical debt collector for Tezzeret. Finally Jace decides to attempt to usurp Tezzeret to turn the Consortium's purpose from that of a mafia outfit to learning and enlightenment.

The stuff about using houses comes from an older novel, Arena, which was published back in 1995.

Magic is still huge; one of my friends plays it, and goes to some of the large tournaments and walks away with a nice stack of green. Having not played it, I cannot comment on the merits of adapting it for the screen, but, express concern that this (along with Warcraft and other massive fantasy films)might be pushing the genre's bubble, economically. These films aint cheap...
