I've just finished watching this and wow just wow.

Peter Weller blew me away as Batman, exactly how Frank Miller's Batman should sound, the score was amazing & the animation was superb. Its definitely the greatest Batman animation I have ever watched.

Only one minor nitpick I didn't care for Gordon's voice at first but it grew on me.

His first few lines sounded really off, but after a few more, it started sounding more like Gordon. I dunno, but I thought the exact same thing when I watched it.

it really bothered me that they changed the line when Batman takes down
Harvey
changing
"i see a reflection, Harvey"
to
"you and me both"
didn't have the same impact at all. that was one of my favorite parts in the novel, and it doesn't come across nearly as well here. pretty disappointing at least for me.

This was such a great film! Defiantly my favorite dc animated film so far, I've watched it twice in a row already because of how much I enjoyed it. Can't wait for part two.

Agreed completely.

Gordon's Pearl Harbor scene was perfect, but the very first scene with Bruce sounded really off.

Yeah definitely strange wonder of next time I watch it I'll just like it straight away?!

I didn't even notice that lol

I'd definitely say its up there but I won't say its my favourite yet. It does depend what mood I'm in. But its definitely the best Batman animation I have ever seen and yes I'm including Batman TAS.

Just finished part one. Really impressed with it. A few missteps but over all very strong and they managed to evoke that very 80's version of the future that I loved so much about the book. Voice cast is pretty excellent in my opinion, music is great too.
Overall, I'd say this ranks with Red Hood standing head a shoulders above all the other DTV animated movies.

Red Hood was amazing but I think this was better but I don't think they're head and shoulders above the rest. Justice League: New Frontier is as good as these as is JL: Doom in my opinion. Also although the animation wasn't as good as other efforts Superman vs the Elite had the best story of any of the DC DTVs in my opinion. All in all though the film that had the best animation was Superman Shazam, the designs in that were second to none. But this is just my opinion and I think the Dark Knight Returns Part 1 is definitely the greatest Batman animation of all time.

Also what a pefect cliffhanger ending to an animation with Joker saying B.. B... Batman.... DARLING (SMILES)

Wwwwooooowwww.

Early June 2013 - Superman: The Lost City of Krypton (MOS Tie-in)

Late Setember 2013 - Justice League: Flashpoint

Is that what the Superman one is called?

As for Flashpoint does that storyline involve the entire JL cause I've never read any of it thought it was just a Flash story?

I do wonder with them doing Flashpoint if the animated movies after that will be from the New 52.

Wonder Woman and the Amazons are at war with Aquaman and Atlanteans. Cities are being sunk. Superman landed in Metropolis and was raised in a Government facility, he's completely pale, small, and skinny from being kept away from the sun. Abin Sur is still alive because Hal saved his life, so Hal is just a pilot. Cyborg is the world's main superhero. But the main story is about Barry trapped in a world he accidentally created and teaming up with that universe's Batman, Thomas Wayne to try and set things straight. Thomas helps, of course, because if they set the universe straight, he'll have died instead of Bruce.

A lot of other characters showed up. But besides Hal, they all have at least a small part in the main series. Captain Marvel has a big part too, but he's six kids who fuse together into S.H.A.Z.A.M.

If they do that, I'd love to see a Court of Owls animation. But I doubt it would only be new 52 because it's not like there DTVs have a solid continuity anyway. With them setting the multi-part precedent with TDKR, I think it would be awesome if they did a 3 part Knightfall adaptation.

Court of Owls would be immense, I'd also like to throw in the Justice League origin and the Action Comics Superman origin (although with them already doing a Brainiac story could be unlikely).

It was just ok. I didn't read the novel or anything. But it was just ok. I thought Batman was too out of shape to be doing most of the things he was doing. Under The Red Hood still holds the top spot for Batman animated movie. The main battle scene towards the middle was a little hard to believe. The chick robin was pretty cool though

Yeah, I thought it was okay but I really do have a major problem. What were they thinking removing the voiceover?! Seriously, I'd really like to know!
If there's one thing Miller realy excels at, it's hardboiled, atmosphere-building narration, and TDKR is no exception.
The narration informs what's happening in the scenes and moves the story along, it also adds an extra layer to the storytelling, without it a lot of this just felt really sparse and flat.

VoiceOver in film is considered lazy screenwriting. It works extremely well in a comic because there's not a whole lot of movement. I welcomed the change as I'm a big fan of show don't tell.

But in The Dark Knight Return's case, the character's voiceover's aren't just a simple device. They actively enrich the story. They're one of that story's greatest strengths. Consider Part 2's Batman/Superman fight. That scene is the emotional denoument of the entire story and without the voiceovers, without that essential insight into what these two men are thinking, it'll lose it's resonance.

Watching it now. About 30 minutes left, and i can say it's pretty awesome so far. Seeing it come together like this in animation, with the voiceovers and all the action..not only does it come alive more than i thought it ever could. But now i realize just how much TDKReturns has influenced Nolans trilogy, especially TDKRises.

And you call yourself a Batman fan. For shame.

I'm really glad they didn't go the VO route whilst I liked it that was a major problem in the Batman Year One movie for me its off putting. I like how they manage to show you what he's thinking through his actions in this movie.
