Why didn't Garret try to get his hands on General Ross' Super Soldier Serum? The stuff gave Blonsky stats that rival Captain America and made him able to survive a hulk sized kick and then heal from it back to 100% while any other human would be permanently debilitated

That serum also messed with Blonsky's psyche and started physically mutating him (his spine seemed to be mutating even before the Hulk blood). Garret probably didn't want to risk becoming a monster.

Also the serum wasn't held by SHIELD, the army have it, so even if he knew it existed he probably wouldn't have access to it.

If SHIELD gets to confiscate the The Abomination that the Army made why shouldn't SHIELD also be able to confiscate the unfinished serum or at least know what its made of in hopes of reversing the effect.

True but the alien drug seems to have that effect and more according to the recording Coulson left behind

SHIELD could have confiscated it, but apparently they didn't, or else Garret would have taken it. -stove logic-

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems all super-soldier serums come at a cost typically madness or some other instability.
The only super soldier serum that actually worked was that made by Dr. Abraham Erskine and even then it took 2 attempts, the Red Skull being the first.

So the serum Blonsky took would probably mutate him, drive him mad, or both

Examples:
Gamma -> Hulk ->lack of control
Extremis -> Exploding
Mirakuru(DC copy) -> Madness
Infinity formula -> needs to be taken every year or rapid aging
Terrigen Mists -> Death, deformity
Venom (DC) -> Addictive, Drives you mad

and so on,

Extremis seems more practical to use (particularly the Centipede version) that Hulk's serum (although Blonsky pre-Abomination didn't seem so bad). Either way, SHIELD does not seem to have access to it based on what we've seen and there's no indication Garrett would have access to it (nor does he have access to Blonsky).

Extremis is what Centipede are using. Raina has a version of the Extremis formula. Also, extremis is what's powering Garrett's Bionics. Garrett's problem is he's too far gone for extremis to work properly.

The trailers will tell you more :cwink:

What's interesting is that in Iron Man 3 Pepper has extremis, but Tony cures her and then takes out the bomb splinters in his chest. Seems like they missed an opportunity for Tony to reconfigure extremis so that it gives him the ability to hack any computer.

Whose to say he didn't get his hands on it? After all, the Centipede cocktail contained SSS derivatives in it. My guess is that the track record with the stuff was bad enough that he knew just injecting himself would go badly. Thus the Centipede research.

No it's not. They're using a combination of Extremis, Erksine's supersoldier formula, Gamma radiation, Chitauri technology, and Chiang's blood cells.

They can't be using Dr. Erskine's formula. If they had that they would provide an army of Cap's (Captain America's) and wouldn't need anything else. Also, where do you get the Chiang's blood link?

As I understand it they're using Gamma Radiation, Chitauri tech and Extremis.

The Extremis is indicated from episode 1 where a potential super soldier explodes

I really don't trust Ross/parts of the military.

Killian was testing on vets and preparing to sell Extremis to the military.
Now Quinn makes a pitch to the military.

Killian said his goal was about supply and demand. There’s a market for super-soldiers. There’s a demand… Maybe someone within the military was expecting Quinn/Cybertek to make a pitch to them, and passed the orders down to accept Quinn’s offer…

If the Centipede cocktail contains the SSS derivative then there's only one place they could have got that...It was definitely mentioned that there’s gamma radiation in it. Somehow, Centipede gained knowledge about gamma radiation, possibly the super soldier serum, as well as Extremis....

It's been my theory for a long while now that Ross gave the Centipede project the knowledge about the SSS and gamma radiation, had deals in place with Killian that fell through...And gave them Extremis as well... He will now make sure the military buys the supersoldiers, the 1000 Deathloks he's waiting for, from Quinn...

The early Extremis explosions were soldiers, they were M.I.A.
Po was an ex-military strategist, wanted obedient Centipede soldiers.
Many Centipede soldiers had military training/were ex-military, Hand brings this up after they rescue Coulson.
There was a Project Deathlok in the comics. It took a bunch of wounded veterans and turned them into Deathloks...

The early Extremis test subjects were kept away from the public eye. The gov't and the military wanted to handle it themselves... It's not until Mandarin and the Chinese theater explosion comes along that it became public knowledge. Tony might have missed something. These injured soldiers showed up at AIM's doorstep to receive treatment. I think someone made them an offer/sent them to Killian. After their service and injuries they went to see Killian to get fixed up, instead of visiting Falcon for PTSD. I think General Ross is involved, I also think he's upset with Shield/Tony after The Consultant -- for taking Abomination & Hulk away. Sitwell and Coulson knew Ross would be upset that they sent The Consultant to deceive him. I'm not worried about Talbot just yet, only Ross and a few corrupt politicians who are making deals with Hydra. Coulson was reluctant to send The Consultant. Sitwell ensured that a Senator would make a visit to Ross, and explain the situation again...I think Ross transferred wounded soldiers to AIM and Centipede to test on. He gave Centipede knowledge about Extremis after his first deal with AIM fell through, then supplied them with gamma radiation/SSS knowledge. Ross forces the other military leaders and secretary of defense to make the deal with Quinn. Tony interrupted the military's secret deal with Killian... Banner shows up at the end of the finale. Ross buys 1000 Deathloks from Cybertek to do with as he pleases.

As said the super solider formula and all derivatives of it cause nasty side effects for everyone except one man (Captain America). Using that is just asking for trouble.

The Centepede formula meanwhile is unstable for everyone but Mike because of how he was ICEered right at the instant he was about to explode. Trying to time it like that is a risk, if it even worked for him at all. And the other soldiers require constant mainteniance to keep from exploding.

And it probably wouldn't work anyway. He's using either Centipede or Extremis to power his cybernetics and it's only barely keeping him stable.

However he had his sights set on the GH serum. Coulson took it and is just fine with no side effects a year later. He later set them up to also use it on Skye and it worked again. He knows that's his best bet to heal himself without any nasty side effects.

Of course there ARE side effects if you don't get the mental alterations as well (well maybe. We're not sure if you take to it better if you aren't actually dead or not. That depends how Skye's reaction to it is ever explained) but nobody knew that because Fury kept that even more top secret than top secret.

I think they have some supersoldier variant similar to what was given to Blonsky

Great post Matt.. the military is definitely involved in this scheme.. could be related to Hydra loyalists in the military or the government..

Well, I assume it's parts of the formula that's known, not the complete formula. Although I still think there's a plot hole in The Incredible Hulk where they seemed to more or less have the formula earlier in the movie for Blonsky.

Also, where do you get the Chiang's blood link?

Episode 1x5 - The Girl in the Flower Dress. It's how they stabilized the Extremis.
