"Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!
You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.
But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!
I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in battle.
We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."

Palm Sunday 1965: Southern Great Lakes ravaged by one of the worst tornado outbreaks on record.

On April 11, 1965, and over a time span of approximately 12 hours, one of the most infamous tornado events in United States history took place across the Southern Great Lakes region. Commonly known as the Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak (more precisely, the second Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak, following one in 1920 and preceding another in 1994), numerous fast-moving tornadoes were unleashed upon the states of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

The twisters claimed over 260 lives, injuring thousands of others and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. It was the worst tornado outbreak in Indiana’s history with nearly 140 killed in the state alone. In modern tornado history, this ranks second to the Super Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974 in terms of violent tornado count in a single North American outbreak, with 17 F4+ tornadoes.

Australian women protest the forced conscription of young Australian men during the Vietnam War in Sydney, 1965.

Save Our Sons (SOS) was established in 1965 in Sydney but soon other groups formed under the SOS banner across the country. Some men and young women became members, but for the most part SOS was comprised of women, mostly middle-class and middle-aged, whose sons were old enough to be subject to national service. The nature of SOS protests varied – some involved silent vigils in public places of commemoration such as Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance; at other times members handed out leaflets at Army barracks or railway stations from which national servicemen were travelling to begin their military service.

Members of SOS also prepared and circulated petitions, approached members of parliament and worked in conjunction with other anti-war groups to protest against national service and the war. Their protests were not always met with the same civility with which they were conducted. Some members of SOS were subject to abuse and insult. Called communists at a time when the term was replete with implications that the accused was somehow anti-Australian, some women were also sworn at and called ‘bad mothers’ and neglectful wives. One woman recalled the unpleasant experience of regular protests outside the Swan Street barracks in Melbourne while families farewelled their sons into military service. Unwelcome and subject to abuse, the SOS protesters persisted because they believed their cause was worth the opprobrium and verbal confrontation.

August 12th, 2000: Oscar II class Russian submarine K-141 Kursk sinks with all hands.

The Russian submarine Kursk was lost with all hands after it sank in the Barents Sea during a naval exercise. It was determined afterwards that twenty-three sailors in the rear compartments survived the tremendous blast- including Lieutenant Captain Dmitri Kolesnikov. They lived more than six hours before an oxygen cartridge contacted the oily sea water, triggering an explosion and flash fire that consumed the remaining oxygen. The Russian government came under scrutiny afterwards as families demanded answers. The incident had at first been covered up, and then even once the rescue efforts had began, the old and outdated equipment failed. It was five days before Russia finally accepted the help of the British and Norwegians.

George Junius Stinney Jr. (October 21, 1929 – June 16, 1944), was an African American teenage boy convicted at age 14, in an unfair trial, of the murder of two white girls ages 7 and 11 in 1944 in his hometown of Alcolu, South Carolina. He was executed by electric chair in June of that year, still only 14.

His appeal to the governor for clemency was denied. He is the youngest American to be sentenced to death and executed.

A re-examination of the Stinney case began in 2004, and several individuals and Northeastern University School of Law organized to seek a judicial review. His conviction was vacated in 2014 when a court ruled that he had not received a fair trial.

Neil Armstrong floating to the ground after ejecting from LLRV1, in May, 1968. If he had ejected a second later, he'd have died.

On May 6, 1968, astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, then assigned as backup commander for the Apollo 9 mission, took off on a simulated lunar landing mission in Lunar Landing Research Vehicle #1 (LLRV-1) at Ellington Air Force Base near the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC) in Houston, his 22nd flight of the test vehicle. Armstrong had been airborne about five minutes when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle. About 200 feet above the ground, he chose to eject. While the LLRV crashed and burned on impact Armstrong parachuted safely to Earth and was not injured. MSC Director Robert L. Gilruth appointed an accident investigation board, chaired by Aircraft Operations Office chief Joseph S. Algranti, an experienced LLRV pilot. The crash investigation showed that a loss of helium pressure caused depletion of the hydrogen peroxide used for the reserve attitude thrusters. The vehicle’s instrumentation did not provide adequate warning about the adverse situation. Engineers corrected the problems before flights resumed in October.

The Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Collection features color photographic surveys of the vast Russian Empire made between ca. 1905 and 1915. In those years, photographer Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking 100 years back in time – when these photographs were taken, neither the Russian Revolution nor World War I had yet begun.

The method of color photography used by Prokudin-Gorsky was first suggested by James Clerk Maxwell in 1855 and demonstrated in 1861, but good results were not possible with the photographic materials available at that time. In imitation of the way a normal human eye senses color, the visible spectrum of colors was divided into three channels of information by capturing it in the form of three black-and-white photographs, one taken through a red filter, one through a green filter, and one through a blue filter. The resulting three photographs could either be projected through filters of the same colors and exactly superimposed on a screen, synthesizing the original range of color additively.

All of these pictures are awesome (as usual in this thread which is one of my favourites, KRYPTON INC) , I just remember putting up this particular pic on FB a couple of years ago, only since I thought it was a cool moment just before that iconic shot.

My brother then asked: But who might that older lady on the picture be?
Me: That has to be Ringo's mum making sure her son looked proper enough for the photo shoot. Which of course I'd no idea if it really was.

But we always have to remember Ringo's awesome reply to why Beatles were so popular at a certain moment. IIRC it went something like this:

- Because we have something for everyone; The girls like Paul. The young angry guys like John. People into mystic stuff like George. And the mums like me.

I don't even care if it might be made up afterwards, it's still bloody brilliant.
