A confluence of three major weather systems, one of which was the remnants of Hurricane Grace, the 1991 Halloween Storm formed in the North Atlantic off the coasts of Canada and New England. Due to its enormous size, raw power, and the bizarre set of circumstances that led to its formation, it would later be dubbed The Perfect Storm. It generated wave heights of 40 to 80 feet, with some unconfirmed wave heights of 100 feet. For several days at the end of October and into November, it spread havoc all along the US and Canadian coasts, and formed into an un-named category 1 hurricane before heading north and east into the Atlantic. While much of the media’s attention focused on the unknown fate of the fishing vessel Andrea Gail, we do know the details of search and rescue units who were kept busy by the storm. Two such units were the Coast Guard’s Cutter Tamaroa and the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing. Sadly, not all of the would-be rescuers would survive the storm.

I was surprised to see Marilyn Monroe reading Ulysses on the previous page. I looked it up and she had over 400 books in her collection. She kept a journal where she wrote poetry and mused on Italian renaissance art.

I find her much more interesting now.

I always get a lump in my throat looking at pictures of 9/11 when you see the sheer scale of the destruction caused, you can only imagine how terrifying it must have been to be in or around any of those buildings at the time.

The Coventry blitz (blitz: from the German word Blitzkrieg meaning "lightning war") was a series of bombing raids that took place on the English city of Coventry. The city was bombed many times during the Second World War by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe). The most devastating of these attacks occurred on the evening of 14 November 1940. An estimated 568 people were killed in the raid (the exact figure was never precisely confirmed) with another 863 badly injured and 393 sustaining lesser injuries. The raid reached such a new and severe level of destruction that Joseph Goebbels later used the term coventriert ("coventried") when describing similar levels of destruction of other enemy towns.

Semi Joseph Begun (December 2, 1905 in Germany – January 5, 1995) was a German-American engineer and inventor. In 1943 Begun was Vice President of Research for Brush Development Company, Cleveland, Ohio. They produced in cooperation with Western Electric the magnetic tape sound recorders. These used hardened steel tape as the recording medium. The recording head was a split ring, with the wire running in a groove in the head, quite similar to the heads used today. High frequency AC bias was used to linearize the recording. The ferritic stainless steel was quite strong. Diamond dies were required to draw it into wire.
