September 11 means something else in Chile. Pictures from the 9/11/73
coup against the democratically elected government which was in fact backed by the United States.

The 1973 Chilean coup d'état was the overthrow of the socialist President of Chile Salvador Allende by the army and national police. It followed an extended period of social unrest and political tension between the opposition-controlled Congress of Chile and the socialist President Salvador Allende, as well as economic warfare ordered by US President Richard Nixon.

The military deposed Allende's Popular Unity government and later established a junta that suspended all political activity in Chile and repressed left-wing movements, especially communist and socialist parties and the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR). Allende's appointed army chief, Augusto Pinochet, rose to supreme power within a year of the coup and formally assumed power in late 1974. The Nixon administration, which had worked to create the conditions for the coup, promptly recognized the junta government and supported it in consolidating power.

During the air raids and ground attacks that preceded the coup, Allende gave his final speech, vowing to stay in the presidential palace and refusing offers of safe passage should he choose exile over confrontation. Direct witness accounts of Allende's death agree that he killed himself in the palace.

Before the coup, Chile had been hailed as a beacon of democracy and political stability for decades, a period in which the rest of South America had been plagued by military juntas and caudillismo. The collapse of Chilean democracy ended a succession of democratic governments in Chile, which had held democratic elections since 1932. Historian Peter Winn characterised the 1973 coup as one of the most violent events in the history of Chile. A weak insurgent movement against the Pinochet regime was maintained inside Chile by elements sympathetic to the former Allende government. An internationally supported plebiscite in 1988 held under the auspices of the military dictatorship was followed by a peaceful transition to an elected civilian government.

Joe “The Godfather” Anthony with Rush during the Canadian trio’s 1975 debut trip to San Antonio where they performed at Randy’s Rodeo. Rush went on to worldwide superstardom and never forgot to credit Joe for being an early supporter. (photo courtesy Al Rendon). Of course Joe’s early endorsement of Rush is perhaps his greatest claim to fame (go ask Geddy Lee … and his banker). Thanks to early spins from Joe, this enduring best-selling Canadian band — for all practical purposes — actually catapulted out of San Antonio, some 1,500 miles from home. Keep in mind that this countdown to stardom took place back when tape-trading and word-of-mouth were “the Internet” of the day. In other words, the odds of Rush becoming millionaires by way of Alamo City were more complicated than a Neil Peart drum solo. Distant early warning? Indeed.

Charles Custer, dead at 91, with wife Irene Custer took photos capturing a time capsule of Route 66, Americana

https://www.okmorephotos.com/backtothepast

The photos shot by Charles and Irene Custer might be the closest many of us will ever get to time travel. Developed again for the first time in almost 70 years, they capture images of smalltown stores, diners, barbershops and beauty parlors on historic Route 66 and other roads. It’s an America of honky-tonks and hair pomades, where coffee cost a nickel, a hot dog set you back 15 cents, and the jukebox was ready to play your favorite song.

Their pictures, taken with an Agfa box camera, are panoramic and dioramic, so detailed that even the linoleum floors reveal secrets. You can see dusty bootprints, each discarded straw at the soda fountain, the individual hairs on barbershop floors.

Route 66 expert and author Michael Wallis likens the photography of Charles and irene Custer to “commercial archaeology.” Charles and Irene Custer’s photos of smalltown, postwar America are so well-lit and composed that they’re like “Hollywood stage sets,” said Richard Cahan, a former Sun-Times picture editor and author of photo books.

The Jonestown Massacre, November 18, 1978.

A grisly scene from both on high and upon the Earth as well. On 11/18/78 the so called Jonestown Massacre took place. Followers of the charismatic populist preacher Jim Jones en masse took poisoned drinks at the behest of their spiritual leader.

A total of 909 members of People's Cult died of cyanide poisoning and 2 by gunshot in Jonestown, Guyana. It was the largest such event in modern history and resulted in the largest single loss of American civilian life in a deliberate act until the events of September 11, 2001.

Jim Jones was a charismatic churchman who established the Peoples Temple, a Christian sect, in Indianapolis in the 1950s. He preached against racism, and his integrated congregation attracted many African Americans. In 1965, he moved the group to Northern California, settling in Ukiah and after 1971 in San Francisco.

Back in Jonestown, Jones commanded everyone to gather in the main pavilion and commit what he termed a "revolutionary act." The youngest members of the Peoples Temple were the first to die, as parents and nurses used syringes to drop a potent mix of cyanide, sedatives and powdered fruit juice into children's throats. Adults then lined up to drink the poison-laced concoction while armed guards surrounded the pavilion.

More than 400 unclaimed bodies from the Jonestown tragedy are buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California, where many of Jim Jones' followers were from.

The music hits of 1979:

A story of Audie Murphy (the most decorated combat soldier in American history, earning every commendation the army could bestow by the time he was 20, including the Medal of Honor. He was also awarded France's and Belgium's highest decorations)...he was 5' 5" and slight of build.

On the night of December 10, 1946....when Audie was driving north from Dallas along U.S. 75 toward McKinney, he was almost relieved of his car by a hitchhiker.

It was raining hard and Audie noticed a large man (6'2", 190 pounds) "limping along the highway." Playing the part of a good Samaritan, Murphy offered the bedraggled walker a ride. "After I had driven about a mile," Audie related, "the man suddenly jammed something into my ribs, slapped me across the mouth and said, "I'm the boss now. If you won't talk this .45 will. I can use this car." After riding several miles further, the passenger ordered Audie to stop at a roadside gas station, took the keys to the car, and ordered Murphy "to slide along the seat and get out on his side of the car." "The man's left hand," related Audie, "hidden under an old army blouse that the hitchhiker had been wearing, was still jammed into my ribs." As Audie started to ease along the seat he decided to make a fight for the gun. He grabbed the man's hand, found he had no gun and "struck him a blow that tumbled him from the car onto the filling station drive." According to the owner of the gas station, a ten minute fist fight took place with Audie getting much the best of it and finally knocking the man out. The State Police were called and, by coincidence, Audie's good friend Everett Brandon was one of the officers who soon arrived on the scene. The bleeding and badly beaten assailant was arrested and, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, placed in the Collin County jail in McKinney.

Wow.

Guy must have been either stupid or desperate. This was 1946, and while Murphy would become even better known later due to his film career, I mean... This dude really didn't recognize a dude that had won the CMH during the war period... Which ended the previous year?

As you say... Play stupid games...
