FullScreen VS WideScreen?

Well there's certain dvd that have widescreen and gfullscreen on the same disk. But that probably means lack of bonus fottage.

honestly, wide screen even on an older tv (non HD) gives a more cinematic look than full screen.

Whatever the film was shot in, is the way I want to watch it. So most of the time that means widescreen. But I wouldn't want to watch some whacked out version of Citizen Kane or Metropolis in widescreen. That would be silly.

As for films like Terminator 2, I'd like to own both versions.

Fullscreen is CRAP!!!
I get so mad when I go to peoples houses and they put on the Fullscreen version of a movie. They use the "But I've no widscreen TV" excuse.

The directors frame the movie in the widescreen format so why watch it any other way? Everythings out of frame.

Watching movies in Fullscreen is like wearing granny panties on your wedding night. Unsexy, stale, shaped wrong, smelly, old and hopelessly out of date.

How about pre-DVD?
Anyone here buy Letterboxed VHS versions before the DVD versions arrived?
Yeah I got a few of the Batman movies like that but they were filmed in 1.85 ratio which isn't that big a difference, I prefer the wider 2.35.

Widescreen only. I once accidentally bought a Fullscreen movie. I bought a gun and shot it. Then I shot the vendor. Then I bought a pinapple because deep down I have serious issues.

Hate fullscreen with a passion. I hate it even more now that i have a widescreen TV. I'm forced to either watch it with black bars on the sides (much more annoying than on the top and bottom) or to have the image stretched out. both upset me greatly.

I wish all TV and movies were filmed and broadcasted in the same aspect ratio, and all TVs were sold in that ratio. If only...

I can't decide between the Frankenstein Legacy collection and the Dracula Legacy collection.

Both collections have movies in their original aspect ratio- Fullscreen.

I do my best to buy Widescreen DVDs 90% of the time. The only times I willingly buy fullscreen are: (1) if the film and/or TV show in question was actually shot that way, like a lot of the older 80's shows; or (2) when I want the film for my collection, and can't find it in widescreen anywhere. A classic example of the latter is my "Grumpy Old Men" DVDs, which are both in fullscreen. If I ever find the WS versions, they are mine!:)

Best post ever.

Good evening all,

What is everyones opinion of the different Screen types and Aspect Ratios of film?

Are you a VHS-aged Pan&Scan type? Or a New-Aged Widescreen type?
Do you rent FullScreen DVD's or Widescreen? What are your opinions on the fact movies are released twice to DVD because of this? Also, what do you think of viewers who like a Filled screen over the Full Picture?

I am interested in all your views. I still watch VHS's simply because I have a large collection of movies, in which the VHS is the larger part. I started it when I was younger and did not see any reason to buy a movie I already owned for a second time. I also have friends who find "Black Bars" simply too annoying to enjoy the film. Myself, I know that when it is Panned and Scanned they crop/Center Scan and fake Camera move with it. Thus, I know FullScreen you see less, unless filmed in Super 35 Format.

However, I was just wondering everyones opinion on the subject of Aspect Ratios and how they are presented.

You must be poor and live in the boondocks.

Incidently, whilst I much prefer widescreen, the format does cut off the top and bottom, dependant on how the film was initially shot, and full screen versions often have extra on the top and bottom.

Of course, this does not stop the format from looking like a cheap video version that some kid recorded with a hidden camera at the cinema.

But they're probably missing material on the sides. And widescreen is typically what the director wants you to see.

Hi, I'm Retro and I used to be a fullscreen person.
Now before y'all start screaming, I've seen the error of my ways and changed. I do make exception if it only comes in FS, but normally I demand WS.

FullScreen is just plain useless. "This movie is formated to fit your T.V" Formated? Just watch the movie as it was shot people! To this day I regret the fact that I have Spider-Man in fullscreen. (cries)

I know, some people, despite everything you tell them, just won't accept the fact that you see more with widescreen.
Doubled agreed. Some people in my family actually perfer FullScreen or just plain don't care one way or another! It drives me crazy, because the movies just look better in widescreen.

Okay...people are saying you see more on widescreen, can some please elaborate how? :o

I still like widescreen more though, but I have no problem with fullscreen. I guess some people have fullscreenphobia

I remember owning a "True Lies" VHS tape that was special edition, and was widescreen. Also, despite already owning the Star Wars trilogy on VHS, I got the widescreen collector's set for Christmas, which was over 15 years ago.
