G.I Joe 2 moved to March 2013 - film conversion to 3D

I don't see how this reeks of stupidity. It reeks of desperation, which is much worse. Its a bit of a surprise, but overall, I think it makes sense from a studio standpoint. BATTLESHIP went up against THE AVENGERS and got beat with a stick made of pure iron. Not wanting GI JOE 2 to come out this Summer and compete with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and some other movies makes perfect sense.

I suspect its a number of things. Probably the studio has concerns with the overall quality of the movie, the 3D thing has proven profitable for other films, and of course, Tatum.

Since Tatum was already in the film, they could easily just have given him top billing anyway, they need not neccessarily reshoot scenes. And it wouldn't take nine months to change his fate from "death" to survival, or cut new trailers. I'm sure there's something else at play, and maybe we'll find out from other sources soon.

Adding more Tatum to the movie isn't as much of a dealbreaker for me as it is for some. I don't think he's good, I'm just kind of nonplussed by him. I don't wish Duke to disappear from the filmverse just because Tatum isn't a great actor. I find that kind of stuff kind of lazy. I'd rather see if maybe another director could get a better performance from him as Duke. Though I do hope that if they put more Duke into the movie that they don't shortchange Flint too much. This is one of DJ Cotrona's first major shots.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

I remember Marlon tweeting that his character was dead which is why he's not coming back.
Damn! so they delay the movie to add more scenes of the white man because the black man always die in movies, that ain't right (or should I say white) you Hollywood people.

Well, we are prone to make heroic sacrifices so Whitey McWhiterson can survive with his love interest.

So are they really trying to get Joseph G-L back for this? Are they just going to reshoot the few times Cobra might not have his helmet on, or add new scenes?

I really have to question whether or not the additional revenue they'll gain from 3D will make up for all the money they've already blown on marketing, as well as the extra money they're going to have to spend now for the reshoots and post-conversion, as well as a revamped marketing campaign. This whole thing just seems foolish.

they knew ahead of time what the release date was.why did they wast millions on marketing and pull it this late?jack the giant killer moved because of all the competion it didnt waste money on marketing only 1 trailer.the extra money they think they will make on 3-d will have already be wasted.

it is foolish most big blckbusters are front loaded so they make the bulk of their domestic money the openong weekend.so what if spiderman came out a week later they didnt have anything big to go against their opening weekend.gi joe could have did between 60 to 70 opening weekend and be fine.if the film is good it would do 30 mill the second weekend if with spiderman being number 1 that weekend.

It's not like they just figured out what Spider-Man is two weeks ago.

They've known all these dates for months and maybe even years ahead of time. To do it a month out is IMHO stupid. They've likely already spent millions and millions on marketing this movie and getting it ready for June.

His love intrest was Scarlett his fate was sealed :woot:

j/k

Hasbro needs to partner with Marvel (again), this time to produce their movies..

What if Magic Mike bombs ? Would that not justify Paramount to delay this movie for Channing Tatum ?

That movie has a $5 million dollar budget, there's more than a good chance it'll make some money.

The trailer is attached to all prints of MIB 3, and the date is still set for next month.

I saw the flick twice at two different theatre chains, and both of them had the one that was playing most recently, with the 6.29.12 tagline.

Well that's kind of unavoidable though. Apart from a few "mandated" trailers, most theaters throw their own trailer packs on there.

No, but they also didn't know BATTLESHIP was going to crash and burn, either. Its entirely possible that they didn't know exactly was RETALIATION was via test screenings, etc, until recently, too.

Obviously they don't think its stupid from a business standpoint, or they wouldn't have made the decision.

I mean so what? So what that Battleship flopped? They are two totally different movies. They committed to this release date a long time ago and they delayed it ONE MONTH OUT. Trailers with the old release date are still in front of new releases. They just wasted millions here with this delay. Battleship wasn't even a Paramount release, it was Universal. That's really on Universal. I'm not sure what difference Battleship bombing really makes.

Obviously they don't think its stupid from a business standpoint, or they wouldn't have made the decision.

Just because they don't think it's stupid doesn't mean that's the reality. Case in point, BATTLESHIP. Obviously, Universal, Peter Berg, etc. didn't think it was stupid either.

If this matters, but reviewer/blogger Adam Quigley of Slashfilm dot com said in a recent podcast that his friend saw GI JOE 2 in a test screening RIGHT BEFORE the announcement. Now Adam said that his friend said the movie DOES not work and it's actually worse than the first one. Spoiler-free, Adam said that his friend said it's a mess and surprisingly lacks action. Kinda like the problem with Ghost Rider 2. Funny enough, only days after, the news hits that Paramont has delayed, with the spin of '3D' reasons, but more for reshoots to save the film.

That being said, Adam did say that his friend's sensibilities may differ than a fanboys, but he did enjoy the first GI Joe for what it was. Adam's a pretty legit dude coming from a popular film site so there you go!

^Lol, I was just about to come on here to post something akin to that. It just makes no sense to me how this movie can lack action based on what we've seen in trailer. I mean the director even said there was a lengthy dialogue free ninja/mountain action.

However, since his friend enjoyed the first movie and thought the sequel took itself too seriously I think that's more of a good sign than bad. At least for me.

Octoberist, Adam Quigley and his buddy can now basically get prosecuted now. He shouldn't have done that. Or I hope Adam is not his friend's real name.

I work in retail and I find it funny we just recently got ready to put up all our GI Joe toys. Damn, the marketing for this film is just going to have to increase even more!

Funny; I know a guy who knows a guy who saw the screening and said it was completely awesome. :o
