Game of the Year 2008 - GTA IV vs MGS4

I'd wait a little while.

Although both of them are phenomenal, I still think Fallout 3, LBP, and Gears 2 may give them a run at the 2008 title.

I'll say MGS4 is my favorite out of the two and vote for it, but GTA4 will go on to win, which I think is a bit of a shame.

I think Fable 2 is going to come in and become a fast favorite, especially with the multiplayer options and the bigger, fully explorable world that is being created.

It depends on how much Fable 2 lives up to Peter Molyneux's promises, and even if it does, I doubt it'll surpass either of these.

Never played an MGS game. Hate GTA. My pick..Fable 2 or GOW 2 when they come out.

Yea, like someone else has said, id wait. Fable 2 could EASILY be the masterpiece that Molyneux has invisioned. Out of those two tho, id say its a toss up.

GTAIV being mutli-plat could give it an advantage against MGS4.

Haven't played Metal Gear Solid 4, but can't see it being better than GTA4, there's just so much stuff going on and to do in the game. Rockstar was really able to make a living breathing city with GTA4, getting more into I'm starting to notice the little things more and being more and more impressed with it. I'm sure MGS4 is incredible, but I haven't and probably will never play it since I don't have much of a desire to get a PS3.

the year's not over yet...there are still some potentially groundbreaking titles coming out. however, strictly out of these 2 choices i have to say MGS4. GTA4 was great, i still love it, but i've always felt the Metal Gear series is on a level on it's own. GTA the series is fun because it's feeds into our urge for sex and violence, but there are other games that cover that spectrum (including Metal Gear). however, Metal Gear is a series that requires the player to use their brain and think about their actions before they execute them. the story and characters are so rich that it's easy to connect and feel for them despite them being a bunch of polygons. i haven't played Bioshock yet, but i've yet to play a game that gets me as immersed into the game as the Metal Gear series has. imo, the Metal Gear series is the best series in adult oriented gaming. so this is a no brainer for me.

Metal Gear Solid 4, easily

Now let me explain. Grand Theft Auto 4, though enjoyable, is far from a 10/10 as most magz and sites have given it, its more along the lines of a 8 1/2 or a 9, I mean come on that leaning against walls mechanic is so glitchy/doesnt work right half the time, and how half the time when you're in a group of cars and you're heading to get into one specific car it for some god forsaken reason turns you around and makes you get into some random car behind you, I mean, come on. Just having a really good story and decent gameplay a game of the year does not make. Really I expect something rated 10/10 to be utterly perfect, which brings us to Metal Gear Solid 4. Controls are solid, the experience feels epic, and also the metal gear story in general is by far one of the best in video game history. Also, as far as people are saying about "wait for fable 2, it might be the best ever" - even if it doesn't get pushed back again and releases on it's scheduled date i guarantee it's not gonna be that epic.

Sure it'll more than likely be fun, I loved the first fable, and i'm sure i'll love the 2nd, but fable doesn't do something for you that the above two games do: Give the main character a real personality. Fable is just a silent avatar of your creation that nods and frowns accordingly to whats going on, and its up to you to pretty much craft his personality from the ground up, but even still, doesn't really give the impact of a character with a good voice actor with a pre-established background and character. And as far as GoW2 goes, imho i didn't think the first one was that great, so i don't have high expectations for it.

I haven't played either. I'm not a big fan of the GTA series, but I have watched all six hours of the MGS4 cutscenes...which makes me want a PS3 even more. I have loved the MGS series in the past, and I'd like to see it win this year

And thats what can end up making fable 2 really great. This character can, in turn be a reflection of your own self if you want. Plus with this added emphasis on love and caring that Molynuex is trying to do could easily end up having this game grab its audience in a way that other games haven't done. It also could go the opposite way and just come off corny.

Youre in the minority on this one and considering that Gears of War was in running for Game of the Year before, its highly possible that this one will be as well. I think, right now, Metal Gear has the best chance, but it wont take the crown easily, not even in the slightest.

I just think that for a game to be game of the year it needs to deliver on all fronts: great gameplay, story, characters, possibly even replay value. And obviously we cannot judge gears of war 2 yet, but I just hope if anything that it has a better story than the first one. The first one's story felt very hollow and I was left scratching my head after the last level, having to look online to hopefully fill in any gaps of wtf just happened lol

Yea, i cant argue any of that, i agree. From the little theyve told us about Gears 2, the story is really supposed to be alot more in depth this time around. Now how that story plays out and if itll work or not remains to be seen.

It's too tough to call:

For the two major gaming sites: Gamespot and IGN, it's too tough to call because they gave both GTA IV and MGS4 10's.

As for the major GOTY award with the AIAS it's another too tough to call incident.

On one hand MGS4 is the last chapter in Kojima's saga and they could give it to him on the fact that it is a great game and it's the concluding chapter to one of gaming's biggest series.

On the other hand, this really isn't a game that the AIAS gives GOTY to. The AIAS has only given their top award to one Japanese game, the rest are Western games. And out of the 11 already given, six of them are FPS games.

Eh, for sheer gameplay and replayability, Brawl obliterates them both, but it won't get a look-in at the GotYs, which like to focus on single player.

And visuals the likes of which are seen in Metal Gear Solid 4.

I agree. I haven't come anywhere near the end of MGS or touched online, but it is miles ahead of GTA for me. Miles.

MGS4 FTW

I can't deny the obvious quality and effort for the detail of GTA, but for me, the actual game element has suffered due to it.

If you'll consider Brawl the game of the year, then you should reconsider your gaming library altogether. I think that the GotY award will be deservedly given to a game that isn't just a wet dream for fanboys, with awkward internet play, which still utilises the same gameplay from all the SSB's from before.

I'm hoping GoW2 will kick all kinds of ass...I really can't wait to get my hands on it. But having finally played GTA4, it's a strong match up. GTA4 is a beautiful game.

But then...so is MGS4

I don't know what to choose :csad:

Too early to go with a Game of the Year Edition, don´t you think?
Not really. Looking at the future releases, I dont really see anything that has me too excited. I think the year peaked with MGS4 and I dont think anything coming in the next few months will top it, at least not for me
