I've been watching since the first episode but I haven't read the books yet...I'm a big fan of magic of fantasy. By any chance, does the storyline involve witchcraft or sorcery at all?

Is there a witch, or mage character in the storyline at all? I'm just curious...

Not till the later books, this is a land where magic has been essentially dead for a few generations

Yes, and yes.
The World of Warcraft, fireball throwing, ice shield, mana burning types, no. Magic is very subtle in this story [BLACKOUT] but it's impact is [/BLACKOUT]:wow:.

Spoiler tags are there for a reason, great job ignoring them. Even though what we are putting in spoilers are still not the whole thing, or subtly dances around the issue ... you still shouldn't read.

As for magic in the series. You can think of it as how we think of magic in our own world. Some people believe in it, most don't. But there are stories (like our bible) where in the past magic was used a lot, just like at some point dragons and all manner of creatures existed. But just like here they are relegated to a past where nobody alive has ever seen a real dragon ... kinda like how we view any extinct species here.

So magic is a thing of the past or something nut jobs believe in. Dragons are as real as dinosaurs, we know they existed, but nobody ever saw one.

Truthfully, you can almost forget the "fantasy" tag till about half way through the second book. Magic slowly starts to creep back in.

Damn!!! I want to read the spoilers and continue to talk about this story... but I am really enjoying the shock value the book is providing right now!! "The S**TE doth hit thy fan" in the last 5 or 6 chapters I've read. I couldn't put the book down last night!! THIS IS A GREAT F**KIN READ!! Thanks HBO for bringing these books to my attention!!

Take my word for it. They get better. A Storm of Swords is perhaps my favorite book, it's definately in the top 3 for sure.

I've already bought the next book...so I can jump right into the next one without skipping a beat.

I highly suggest reading the book and watching the series in unison. I get to see everything I just read on screen in less than a week after I've read it... I did pretty much the same thing with the LOTR. It's great to see an adaptation that is sooooo close to the actual novels... that close to reading the source material.

So close? Seriously? 60% of this show is made of never existed scenes in the books. They gives more screentime for Minor characters in the book(Jaime Cersei, Robert, Littlefinger, Varys etc. ) on the expense of Main Characters(Arya, Sandor etc.) in the books. They Fills the show with Bad Filler scenes on the expense of great scenes from the books. How can you say it so close to the books?
IMO... The adoption is worst then i thought. I didn't have high expectation from this adoption, because the best parts of the books are what happening inside the characters' head, but come on...

what scenes specifically?? some have been changed a bit, like the scene with Arya chasing the cat was changed a bit, and that was more for brevitys sake than anything else because its a long scene in the book

they cut out Cats approach to the Aerie, but looking back, you really only needed her conversation with her uncle and the rest is more for atmosphere than anything else

I find that they were able to add in some scenes of dialogue to help people with the exposition and cut the fat on some scenes.

Having freshly read the chapter then seen the show or vice versa... I could really reflect on both the directors/writers thought process when adding/deleting/editing for television. I think that they did a great job explaining what is and has happened without seeming overly talky.

And Isub_Zero... its difficult to really express what the characters are feeling on screen, like in the books... so that sometimes makes the show's creative staff have to come up with ways of explaining not only the characters' feelings, but also the rich background and history of the 7 Kingdoms.

I've read my fair share of books that were NOTHING like what I saw on screen. This is VERY MUCH like what I read in the book. Kudos to them for that!

this is probably one of the best adaptations (of any book to tv or film) that Ive seen

I'm still debating whether I should read the book way ahead of the series' progression, or read the book after the series has completed so I'll be surprised as the events unfold in the show.

Currently reading the book just ahead of each episode... and its awesome! I know what is going to happen in the episode (pretty much) and I get to see what I just read... but I also get the surprises and twists and turns.

It's both a great adaption and a terrible one at the same time. It's great in that the parts it does right, are amazing. But most of the parts they're doing wrong or changing bits to make it look better on screen. The wolves have barely been shown and are a HUGE part of the books. Barn's whole 3 eyes crow dream sequences are completely void from the show, and are THE REASON for things that happen to him later - which will likely now be completely out of no where and not make much sense or be completely shoe-horned in - much like Ghost randomly being around Jon even though he hadn't been shown since he was a pup in the first episode.

Off the top of my head? About 50% of every episode. For example, the Jamie/Ned fight never occurred, was at night time, was in the rain and they were both on horses. What they're doing with it is great, as it's just enough to get people to want to read the books if they REALLY want to know what's going on, but show just enough to keep along if you're just watching it week to week.

But again, it's 12 episodes that split up an 800 page book that has very very very little fat in it, compared to say Tolkien who would spend 10 pages describing someones button on their shirt. So they gotta cut some stuff out. But why they would cut out important things that happened in favor of Prince of Rose sucking some cock is beyond me.

I guess they are trying to keep it steamy or something.

Yes, there are changes. Totally useless changes that show up and kinda throw me off. I see a scene from the book so I expect to see the next scene or chapter, or something within that sequence after.

I will say though, that even though they cut most of Tyrion's lines, the ones they kept stick pretty close for the most part. He is not nearly as dirty or even as witty as he is.

Let see... Jaime, Barristan and Robert's scene a few episodes ago.
Barristan and Ned's scene the passed episode, Cersei and Robert's scene. Renly and Loras's scene(Though i can understand in a way this scene for the sake of next season, but still...), Varys and Petyr's dialogue etc. all took place in the passed epsiode and a lot more.
IMO what Benioff and Weiss might doing here is trying to make the show their own and they're doing a very bad job with it, as a fan of ASoIaF, IMO.

And BTW...I'd rather see a longer scene with a main character(s) then a added scene, that never happend in the books.

I liked that scene with Barristan, Jamie, and the King....and people have to remember...THIS IS TV, CABLE TV, so you have to make changes to keep the viewers (those who haven't read the books) involved

renly and loras' relationship is one of those things, and its actually something that Martin himself had softened in the books

If you have HBO GO after HBO airs episode 6 on Sunday they will make Episode 7 available on HBO GO after airing Episode 6

wow the best episode yet that ending was brutal!!!

tyrion was awesome tonight

Ya that is one way to get a golden crown!

Great episode I agree.

Oops

Though I did come in here to say that I like that prostitutue chick...what else has she been in?

So it finally happened?! I have to watch the episode, but we finally get to see the brutal and disturbing demise of a character!

"The Dragon" brat-bastard got it this early?! I'm surprised, but I enjoyed seeing it. I also cannot figure out why Jaimie and/or Lena Headley would give the assassin Tyrion's knife unless....it wasn't they who tried to murder the boy. But then who would? Because if they did give the assassin the knife, they set their family on a collision course with the Starks. Too bad that Tyrion is the only one I like.

also drogo was awesome the actor has some major screen prescence

he was loving and a man to fear all in one scene

Disappointed to see the direwolves taken out of the scene with Bran.

Makes me worried about cutting back on future FX shots
