Game of Thrones

I bought the boxset with the new covers, also. I actually prefer them to the originals. I bought the first book about a year or two back, and couldn't get through the first few chapters so I returned it. Then I watched the first episode of the HBO series, and I decided to give the series a try again. Glad that I did. I am on page 250 of Game of Thrones, and I can't put it down.

are you guys really worrying about covers? I never really understood this debate. I don't know, covers, for whatever product don't really interest me... they only exist to protect the stuff inside... the book paper, the dvd or BR. As long as what is inside is up to standard, I really couldn't care about the covers (infact, if there was a safe way to deal with product, excluding the covers, I'd buy that, if it saved me a buck... or even a penny).

Are you really interpreting a conversation about different covers as "worrying?" We are just talking about what covers we like and such.

For me being a literature nerd I love original covers, alternate covers, etc. I've got 5 copies of Atlas Shrugged, all different, same for The Fountainhead. When it comes to the James Bond novels I have the original hardcovers, original English paperbacks and American paperbacks as well as the new covers that came out in the 90's. For the post Fleming authors I've got 3 copies of License renewed, hardback, Brit paperback, American paperback, etc. I could go on, but when you went to college for Literature and Journalism being a book nut is apart of it.

no, jsut commenting on this and other discussions that pop up on the forum from time to time. Usually comes when DVD season sets come out, and people start debating which covered product they should buy. Like I said, if the material on the inside is the same, then to me, covers (or what's on them) is irrelevant to me... as long as it protects what is important, what's inside. (ie. I don't care about the cereal box, I care about the cereal)

I'd also continue this line of though into intro sequences on TV shows. In the case of GOT, I really like the intro, its quite different and interesting. But that being said, it will wear annoyingly thin after a while. I prefer the more recent approach to intros (ie. Lost or SGU) where they just display the shows title, and get on with it. The BSG approach I found quite novel aswell, with a standard intro, that included the fast paced flashes of the episode one was about to watch. But like covers, intros are just irrelvant packaging to me. As I said, with GOT, the intro is quite interesting. I think the only thing I would change about it, is to show a little more of the map in total, so you can see how big the world is... which would solve some of the earlier comments on the representation of the passage of time.

I hate the lack of intros on TV shows lately. It's a presentational element, so leaving it off entirely just reeks of laziness on the part of the crew to me. A great intro sequence sticks in people's minds and gets them excited for the show. Even today, you can hum the song from the intro of, say, The A-Team and people who used to love that show back in the day will instantly go on a nostalgia trip and remember how great it was.

I agree. Growing up in the 80's, I still remember the intros of my favorite TV shows; intros like Knight Rider, A-Team, Three's Company, MacGuyver, Mission: Impossible, etc. I've been using those theme songs as my ringtones right now, which brings back alot of nostagia when I hear them on my phone. It's too bad the TV execs right now neglecting this awesome part of the TV shows, except for the Hawaii Five-O remake (which thankfully retains the classic theme song with new instruments).

Yeah, the 80's ruled for intros. How about sitcoms with those sickly catchy themes?

But I really don't mind them being cut sometimes. Like they did sometimes in SG1 or BSG, sometimes you really just have to get right into it.

title sequences are outdated IMO....not really needed and they get in the way....LOST and BSG are as long as "title sequences" should really get

Last great intro was Buffy.

I really loved the one we had for Reaper. The one on Chuck is pretty cool too. I love a catchy, major key opening.

Why would it be outdated? Why can't the TV producers see how great it is to be able to identify a TV show just by their theme song alone? Right now most of the series are as memorable as their song, which is not much.

Chuck is great, too bad they used an existing rock song instead of creating an unique theme song of their own.

'The Closer' has the best opening, title cards cut in with the start of the episode

Chuck has a very fun opening.

But Game of Thrones opening was awesome to set the map up for the story, without actually showing it in the episodes. Plus, it kinda shows what's to come in the season if you watch it properly.

I love opening credits sequences. I hope they don't disappear altogether. Buffy, Chuck, Dexter, Rome, Deadwood, Mad Men, True Blood...all classic opening sequences. Game of Thrones is right up there with those.

Also, this is one of the all-time greatest, imo:

I noticed that as well. When it panned over [blackout]Vaes Dothrak, I had to resist the urge to bounce around in my seat and go, "OH MAN, some serious s***'s gonna go down there!"[/blackout] for fear of spoiling my friends who haven't read the books.

don't get me wrong, I don't hate them... initially. But if a show is successful, I get to the point where I just can't stand it anymore.

Dexter for example. The intro was/is great. But by the time I'm 2-3 episodes into the season, I really could care less, and now, a number of seasons later.... I just don't want to see it anymore, and would rather just jump right in.

HBO/Cable shows are a little different as they run on different schedules without commercials, and generally have shorter seasons. So I don't feel like they are burning air time, and I don't get as bored with it.

But for regular TV, I feel like their wasting 1-2 minutes of my precious 41 minutes of TV. And with 22 epi seasons, I get to a point where I can't stand the intro.

GOT's intro is great. But it'll get to me after a while I think. Luckily seasons are short, and hopefully they'll change up the map a little each season to show the changes in the 'landscape'

Just saw a clip from tonights episode, wow Peter Dinklige continues to own.

I wonder how that is going to go since she has the wrong guy

Here are my favorite opening sequences:

1. True Blood (better than the actual show)

2. Rome

3. Firefly

4. The Borgias

5. The Tudors

I intentionally left off sitcoms because the ones you remember (Friends, Cheers, The Office, MASH) become cliché to the point of annoyance over time.

Episode 4 really seemed to fly by. Felt like it was over in no time.

Glad there was a bit more Jon Snow. He's probably my favorite character in the book followed by Tyrion and Arya.
