Gamera The Brave (2006) Japanese monster flick

I got ahold of a Japanese DVD bootleg of this movie recently. Yes, it's pretty kid-oriented, but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The new Gamera looks too cute and his origin is something right out of Pokemon, but the monster fight scenes were dynamic well-filmed. The enemy monster Jidas is sort of a cross between the old-school Gamera enemy Barugon from 1966 and the evil sea-dragon Dagara from Mothra 2: Undersea Battle (1997).

I enjoyed this movie more than any of Toho's late 1990s Mothra films, which were similar kid-friendly kaiju movies. If you like Gamera, just put the serious-themed 1990s Gamera movies out of your mind, and you can enjoy Gamera the Brave just fine. 7/10

I just can't enjoy Japanese monster movies. The essential pointlessness of the human characters, the basic 'storylines' that are really excuses for monsters fighting.....doesn't work for me.

Anyway, carry on.
