Gamers' Legacy: retro console discussion thread

The top loader NES is definitely a much more reliable machine than the regular one. Unfortunately though it's a lot rarer, and also Nintendo for some bizarre reason took out the A/V cable support for the system. It's possible to mod the system to put the AV support in, but it's a major hassle that 99% of gamers probably wouldn't want to bother with. Not that it matters much though, seeing how rare the top loader is.

Anyway, I ordered my new replacement connector today. Hopefully I don't have to replace it again, because given how sparsely my NES gets used, I would have expected my last one to have gone a lot further (or at least made it to the "blinking light of death" phase).

I got my copy of Secret of Mana with strategy guide in the mail today. I won it for $25 and was the only bidder. I was surprised no one else bid.

Had a week off work for "vacation" (paid week off but didn't go anywhere) and came back to find out I missed out on an atari 7800 and some other goodies. My friend "thought" about calling me to let me know but forgot...GRRR.
Anyway, we did get a bunch of 2600 games this week so here's my latest haul:

2600 games:
Challenge
Enduro
Megamania
Journey Escape
Spider Fighter
Smurf
Rampage
Donkey Kong Junior
Inca Gold
Pitfall!
Pitfall II
Title Match Pro Wrestling

also:
Target Renegade (nes)
Super C (nes)
Trojan (nes)
Donkey Kong (colecovision)

Not too bad really, also I picked up a Game Gear a few weeks back but not sure if I mentioned it earlier.

I really need to find more shelf space for games...this is getting rediculous.

I got the best deal evah!

My friend was going to trash his old SNES because he never used it...so instead he gave it to me. What I got were:

SNES generation 2 style
Uniracers
Mario Paint w/mouse and mousepad, plus an extra mouse he had
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Star Fox
Goof Troop
Super Empire Strikes Back
Super Gameboy
Game Genie w/o the actual code book

Since I paid nothing for it, I'd say it was a pretty sweet deal.

It means I don't have to use my FC Twin to play my SNES games any longer. :D

Don't ask me...I think his wife wanted him to get rid of it...either way, I made out like a retro loving collector bandit. :D

Picked up an SNES at a garage sale today with
Spider-Man/X-Men Arcade's Revenge
Spider-Man
Super Return Of The Jedi
Toy Story
Incredible Hulk
World Heroes
Batman Forever
Not bad for 10 bucks

Picked up a U-Force (horrible nes accessory) at work today, didn't come with the T-bar, hand triggers or Power Bar though. Still, you don't come across them very often.
Also picked up Frogger (ColecoVision) and Q*Bert (2600).

Q*Bert is a great game.
It seems as time goes by, less games hold an enjoyment factor over large periods of time.
A lot of classic arcade games though never seem to lose their enjoyment (q*bert, frogger, donkey kong etc).

And Galaga, don't forget that...still one of the best and most fun games to play.

Very true, I could be here all day mentioning classic titles that still are super fun to play today.

Demon Attack on the 2600...pure bliss...until they split into two little tiny bats! I hate those bats. :cmad:

I just recently found out about a Godzilla game for the Super Famicom called Godzilla: Kaijuu Daikessen. It was never released outside of Japan, but I downloaded the ROM and it's actually very good. It's fun, has nice graphics, and the music and sound is mostly taken straight from the movies. Apparently the cartridge is not that hard to come by for $20 or less online, and modding an SNES to be region free is easy enough that I might just find myself buying it in the near future.

Reminds me of the good old days playing Destroy All Monsters Melee on the Gamecube with my brothers and friends. :)

Aw man that game looks crazy fun. I actually really liked Destroy All Monsters for the GC. It's kind of cool seeing an old school 2D Godzilla fighter

Picked up another Dreamcast at work today, along with 3 controllers (red, blue and green).
The controllers I'll keep for myself, but I'm going to clean up the system and sell it to a friend of mine (if he still wants it).
Also snagged:
Venture (2600)
Yoshi's Story (n64)
pokemon snap! (n64)
star wars episode 1 racer (n64)

Two weeks ago I also picked up a 2600 4-switch "darth vader" model.
Just need to find a "heavy-sixer" and a jr "short rainbow" and my 2600 console collection will be complete (not including clone and foreign models).

I recently started playing Quest for Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness again. Man, this game kicks so much ass! :D

A few days back I found and grabbed one of my favorite NES shooters: Abadox.

Awesome awesome game.

I found an ad for an Atari 2600 on Craigslist that comes with a bunch of controllers and games. The person selling it says that they're moving and getting rid of all their old stuff that they don't use anymore. It's an open offer, so they don't have an asking price. I'm thinking about offering them $30 for the lot, with the possibility of haggling my way up to $40 if they want more. Do you think that's a reasonable price, or should I go higher / lower?

Here are the pics they included in the ad:

I say that you should make him provide proof that it works and then offer him the $30

Should I make a low offer, like $20, and then add "If you can test the console and determine it works though, I'll give you $40"?

Also, my friend says that Ataris aren't very inclined to break down as opposed to the NES, so it's not as big of a risk if it's untested. Still, I'd like some confirmation that the system itself will actually work before I drop money on it.

The 6-player X-men arcade machine is one of the holy grails of arcade collecting. Not quite up there with Star Wars, but still a highly desireable item. This thing was freakin' huge, and even had two side-by-side monitors arranged in such a way as to create the illusion of a massive 8:3 widescreen display, which was mirror-mounted to give an even greater sense of depth to the playing environment.

They have one of these at the arcade I sometimes go to. It rocks! :word:

One of my all time Favorites!!! :woot:
