Sci-Fi Gareth Edwards reportedly in talks to return for Jurassic World Rebirth sequel

I found Rebirth extremely meh. But I do like Edwards as a director so hopefully him being involved from the start helps.

Really liked Rebirth. Curious what they can do with proper development time.

I mean it clearly had the proper development time. Amazing what you can do without announcing it before you even have a concept of a plan. They had a script ready to go, with a lot of pre production done. Its likely why Lietch dropped out, because he wanted to make to many changes that would require a delay.

Rebirth was about as mediocre as modern blockbusters go but it made money so I'm not surprised about this. I'll say the same thing I've said since Fallen Kingdom, "I'll be cautiously hopeful it can't be the worse than the last one" and hopefully they won't disappoint me with the 4th movie in a row.

This was a nice group of leads to spend a couple hours with, which is far more than I can say for the previous cast, so while I can't say I'm hyped, I will say I'm looking forward to this sequel more than the other World's, at any rate.

You think Rebirth was worse then Dominion?

I'm sure there are no shallow reasons attached to this. :o

I recognize that Johansson, Ali and Bailey are charismatic and likeable enough to somehow made their (non) characters kind of work and being automatically more competent leads than Pratt and Dallas Howard but... I just found that movie so rough to watch.

Maybe I live on Earth-2, but as bad as the modern trilogy was, Rebirth –while certainly more entertaining– felt actually kind of worse to me.
The Snickers wrapper that puts a laboratory security system out of whack, the very “video game”-like quest to collect dinosaur blood from various elements, that obnoxious stoner guy, the cartoon scene where he's peeing, the caricatured businessman antagonist, that incredibly silly dialogue between characters who are talking about their past that I could swear was generated by ChatGPT, everything about the D-Rex (made me wonder what that "d" really stand for)...

I get that the franchise, by pursuing Spielberg's adaptation, has nothing left to say about the original subtext and is now forced to dive hard into pulp adventures. And I can accept that.
In fact, several scenes in the film reminded me of how I used to play “Jurassic Park” in the bush as a kid in the 90s, which mainly involved running around, hiding, and shooting like crazy with my wooden rifle...
But I'm convinced it all could be done with way more care and rigor.

The film otherwise had some cool and atmospheric visual, but since it is the seventh installment and cost millions of dollars to make, I can't consider this much a feat. Yet, Edward still managed to have his creatures' height change very noticeably from one shot to another, adding confusion to the occasional consternation.

Anyway... All this rambling won't matter anymore when I go back to the theater in two years. :funny:

Maybe not though it's a really fine line. If Dominion was a 3/10 then Rebirth was like a 4/10. I think expectations might play into it also. Even though I disliked Fallen Kingdom, I was hyped for Dominion when they were bringing some of the original actors back. (In retrospect I should have seen the warning signs). With Rebirth my bar was lower but I still felt disappointed.

I think @J.Drangal sums up some very good criticisms above. It's like they had the lesson of how bad Dominion was and they somehow made a movie that sucked so bad after the fact. With every bad sequel in a row you get slightly more frustrated that they didn't try to step up their game.

The stoner kid is obnoxious for his first scene. After that he spends his time proving himself to dad, in a well worn, but not out there character arc. I love the peeing scene. It's a really good way to establish the threat of those dinos while also having some light hearted, but also pretty vicious fun making it clear the raptors are out.

I think it's really hard to complain about caricatures in Rebirth when comparing it to the World trilogy. Because every single character in those movies is a caricature, without the added benefit of likable actors. Add to the fact that in two of those movies, the women are misogynistic stereotypes treated horrendously. Rebirth easily wins on the character front imo, which is most important to me.

It's the same with complaining about the plot. Look at the plot of the other 5 sequels. Varying from as and even stupider and more importantly, not as well directed outside of the Lost World. Edwards builds tension inside his action scenes. So yeah, is the side quest stupid? Sure. But at least it plays out in a fun, thrilling way imo.

For me the worst aspect of Rebirth is the opening. It's unnecessary. They should've just opened with the family and introduced the team when they pick up Ali. They have plenty of time for exposition on the boat. I feel like that all happened because they wanted to follow the formula of the others, with pre-mission, real world openings segments. Bad idea.

Rebirth is the 7th movie. I 'd also argue it's the first good one since the original. Which to me is far more refreshing. But I also didn't waste my time going to the theater to watch Kingdom (third best movie) and Dominion, after I let the nostalgia or World wash off of me.

It's cool that you like it and all the power to you but for me it's easily bottom 3 of the Jurassic franchise only topping Fallen Kingdom and Dominion. I didn't really get much out of the characters. I think ScarJo (who I like) is a less interesting Chris Pratt, I do like Mahershala Ali but that's the actor more than the character. Jonathan Bailey was the one shining light for me, I think he takes a bland role on paper and gives some spark to it. Definitely enjoyed him the most.

Otherwise I agree with points @J.Drangal made. The movie hinges on a snickers wrapper (quite literally), the overall structure feels like a video game with levels to it. I wasn't a big fan of the frankenstein rex at the end either but I get it, the hybrid thing is their main angle now. For all the jabs we take at the stupid gymnastics scene in The Lost World or the raptor dream in JP3, there were like 3-4 moments like that in Rebirth I thought.

At the end of the day I do think the original JP is in a tier of its own and I'm not even sure I'd put the better sequels in the tier below it. There's definitely a gap but after a couple of frustratingly stupid JW sequels I did hope they would learn some lessons for Rebirth but it felt like more of the same, to me.

Movie was pretty bad. Franchise needs to die if this is the product they’re putting out

Hoping for a different screenwriter/more time for production this time around.

I actually think the screenplay for Rebirth was better than all the other JWorld’s. By a lot. Aside from the godawful opening scene, it was a simple, streamlined plot not depending on collective stupidity, the characters weren’t obnoxious, made mostly sensible decisions, and the dialogue wasn’t constantly cloying attempts at “banter.” Low bar, but it’s been the bar for the entire World era, and this cleared it. Would have liked to see Koepp come back, but I know that’s very unlikely.
