Sci-Fi Gareth Edwards's Jurassic World Rebirth

I don't know what to watch on Friday. Supes or Jurassic. I know I'm gonna have fun with both.

Either double feature or the one with the better reception (not Jurassic). :o

You know... I've never done a double feature. Maybe the time has come?

Ended up seeing this a week earlier than expected. Was hoping to do a series re-watch first and only had Dominion to go but our screening of Megan 2.0 got cancelled so we saw this instead.

And yeah, this move just doesn't really justify it's existence. If anything, it takes the franchise 2 steps back by limiting things to an island again when the whole point of the previous trilogy was moving the franchise beyond that. Now the previous trilogy wasn't great by any means, but it tried to move the franchise in a new direction at least. Just 5 years later they walk that back as far as they could, even stating the dinosaurs are now dying out in most areas.

This island wasn't really any different to Isla Nublar or Sorna, and the Dino's there weren't hugely different to those islands either. Johansson, Bailey and Ali do their best in the movie, but their characters have barely any meat on them at all and are just there being stereotypes. The family could have been an interesting angle, but they just made some of them too annoying.

Dolores was barely in the movie, and the D-Rex even more so. Plus why make as generic a Jurassic movie as possible and then not have the T-Rex save the day at the end?

I sound like I hated the movie, I didn't but it was just so average. Edwards can do scale as well as anyone, but they should have delayed this a year and given it a few more re-writes. But the movie is making a boat load so Universal won't care. 6/10.

Also, these movies are meant to be a new trilogy, but they left absolutely no where to go with it at the end.

This movie has me conflicted... on one hand, I actually really enjoyed this movie. But it didn't feel like a Jurassic Park/World movie to me. I enjoyed it as a generic monster movie. In fact, I feel like it would have fit better in the Monster-verse, than in the Jurassic-verse. As a generic monster movie, it's a solid 8/10. But as a Jurassic movie, It's like 6.5/10.

Even though I did not like the film and would say it's down there with Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, I will say one positive I thought about was that I'm happy they managed to stay away from using velociraptors again. Ever since they started making sequels it feels like they're afraid of not using the T-Rex or the raptors and they always seem to get shoehorned in, so I appreciated not using them in this.

However I guess the problem is that the flying dinosaurs that replace the raptors feel pretty generic and underwhelming so I would imagine the next movie goes back to them anyways.

I would hardly say the raptors were shoe horned in, considering I think many would consider Blue a highlight.

Re-watched Fallen Kingdom tonight and while it's got some seriously stupid moments, I like this movie a good bit. The opening is great. It has the best Rexy porn in there entire series and has Blue being a superhero and saving the day. The first hour is great, and the volcano erupting is best reason the series has come up with for people going back to the island.

The Brachiosaurus death scene still tugs at the heartstrings a good bit. I also really like the sequence where they have to draw blood from Rexy in that enclosed space. Tense stuff and Bayona's directs the hell out of a shoddy script. Dominion next with Rebirth next week.
Honestly, if I were Universal back then, I would've dropped Colin Trevorrow, went on with Bayona as a director for the finale, allowing him to develop part three as the sequel to his own movie the way he thought it would be best.

I couldn't agree more buddy. I think FK would have been Dominion level had Treverrow directed it instead. Bayona's direction just elevated FK so much.

My point was we've had 6 movies in the franchise before this and this is the first one not to have velociraptors. I like Blue as much as the next guy but I feel like Jurassic World wouldn't have used the 'raptor squad' if they weren't already a big part of the franchise and they wanted to mine nostalgia like most recent sequels do. Fallen Kingdom and Dominion obviously carry over raptor stuff from Jurassic World. It was just refreshing to let them rest for a movie.

And I love velociraptors it's just I don't think you need to drag them into every Jurassic movie.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The cheesy moments in the trailer didn't feel as cheesy in the film and while characters do continue to make not-so-smart decisions, it's a staple of the series at this point and didn't feel as glaringly stupid. Even the most annoying characters don't reach the high levels of annoyance of Pratt, Dallas-Howard, and all the other secondary characters in the last trilogy. The nostalgia bait is always something that's bothered me regardless of franchise, I feel it was more subdued on this time around which I appreciated. I enjoyed this being more of a self-contained simple story rather than the bloated mess the last trilogy was. Out of the last 3, Fallen Kingdom is the one I enjoy the most. This felt more of a soft-reboot with this new team acknowledging some of the disappointment out of Dominion.

7/10

If this move has something going for it, which the last 3 didn't (if we exclude the original actors) it was the massively likable cast. I wanna see more dino movies with these people.

This sequel/reboot was surprisingly enjoyable and it's been such a long time since I actually loved Scarlet in something. It had enough of the old setup and just enough of new to keep it interesting. I loved that they showed me the water dino to my hearts content, finally, it has been short changed for 3 movies now. And the flying raptors was a nice touch because God knows they overkilled with them and the T-Rex.

So after re-watching Dominion I can rank this series:

1) Jurassic Park
2) Jurassic World
3) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
4) Jurassic Park 3
5) The Lost World
6) Jurassic World: Rebirth
7) Jurassic World: Dominion

saw it today loved it, nice little easter egg where you see a school bus with a school named after Michael Crichton and I am sorry hearing the JP themes in this movie still bring a smile to my face
