Gender Roles & Identity in contemporary society

Don't agree with this I'm afraid, you make it sound like it's (life) a alpha male bear-pit where all males are concerned and their outlook and capacity (or lack of to look at something other than 'must have it'), it's not.

Would you step aside applying for your dream job to give someone else a chance at it for the sake fairness? I certainly wouldn’t, why? Because I have to look out for myself first and foremost. Now, times that by a factor of several thousand. If there is say a 20-1 ratio of men to women in engineering the competition is going to be fierce for anybody.

I don't really agree with this.

Don't get me wrong if its a case of women started getting voted in and are more popular than the blokes then yeah im all for it they can be 50%, 60%, 70% as much as they want.

But just simply because you make up half the population shouldn't mean you are automatically half of the government. There are different levels of representation all across the board in different fields its not always a case that one gender is being supressed. And I would bet a lot of money that when you do this some of the better people for the job get left out men and women.

And it’s insulting to women to think they are going to vote for a party simply because they have a near 50% quota.

Yeah, this explains why the people in power do what they do. They are looking out for their dream... There is such a level of ignorance here. Ignores the fact that it isn't an issue of competition, but that men, especially white men, automatically get considered first, and when they fail, so many fail upwards. When it comes to women and minorities in these situations, they get far less opportunities and they have to hit it out of the park right away. If they don't, so many disappear. Where as white men can fail, fail again, fail again, and continue to get chances.

It must be nice to live in a world where you can just act like everything is equal.

I mean, just look at the Tsujiara situation at WB. Or Weinstein. Or at Perlmutter's views.

These are the people in power.

I don't pretend everything is equal because it isn't. However, I do prefer to work with and treat people on equal footing regardless of who they are. I don't make the assumption that people are automatically being set back because of their heritage because whether you like it or not life throws each and everyone of us bad cards that we have to deal with one way or another. All we can do, and all I would ever advocate, is that people do the best they can to overcome the obstacles that are presented to us. Some will make it, others won't, but all people can do is try and to offer help when it's possible.

You can't expect one group of people who might outnumber another group to simply step aside though. If there's a 20-1 advantage of men over women in an occupation none of those 20 men are simply going to be that courteous to step aside for that woman. It's a shear numbers thing. Besides, we've go a bigger problem on the horizon and that's automation. You think it's unfair now? Wait until business move more and more towards using robots, when buses and trucks start driving themselves, and when retail shops all employ self service checkouts. Automation is single biggest obstacle coming our way that's going to cost countless millions of jobs and no-one is talking about it. You think it's bad now? Wait until low paying jobs are taken over by robots and 20% of people are out of work.

The robot invasion is already killing people's pensions, I've seen it first hand and know such people. It's not being discussed in the media like it should. Soulless, cold and calculated. The top 1% turning people against each other so they can steal our future and our souls. Pacified or distracted.

I would like to point out I do care what others do behind closed doors. However the way gay marriage was legalized was wrong that'snot how our gov works.

How should it have worked? People getting to vote on whether someone they don't even know is "allowed" to get married or not? That's not up to them.

If we did that then the majority would always vote against the minority. Being a non-white male without property would mean you aren't important enough to consider a person.

The ability for LGBTQ couples to marry is already covered by the general rights afforded to all citizens of the United States.

And why is that? Because there's been a concerted effort from certain corners of society to make a lot of men think that the vast majority of sexual harassment claims are bogus, meaning either totally lies made up out of whole cloth or cases of women being "too sensitive" and misconstruing innocent gestures and comments as being in the same league as groping or telling an employee that exchanging sexual favors is the only way to rise through the ranks at the job. It's telling. The caricature of what women are talking about when it comes to questions of sexual harassment and men in authority abusing their power over others is what these guys think is the reality. "Most of these women are lying, and if they're not then they are cuckoo Femnazis who think that I'm asserting my Patriarchal Sexual Dominance at the workplace when I hold the elevator door open for her and other passengers... There's no way I can win!"

I can't say that there aren't those that DO live up to the caricature of the easily offended Progressive Feminist out there. They do exist. But... No they aren't the majority of women. The majority simply don't want to be treated like prey animals on a game hunt at their jobs. And they want the workplace to take into account things like the balance of home, family and personal lives with career.

So as a recap... People with actual power and influence once again have been told and choose to believe that in a story about those that have been victimized by the powerful that the REAL issue is how this affects them, and the real victims are themselves because of the unyielding nature of those too sensitive or those that are outright lying.

So... The usual reactionary bull**** of the last 40 years.

Who on Earth still cares what the Vatican has to say about anything?

As a Catholic, I wish I could trust in what the Vatican has to say: but Pope Francis has become increasingly like his predecessors.

I just read about that judge. Another one who thinks "boys will be boys" especially from rich families should get away with actual crimes. And we know if he weren't a rich, spoiled kid he would have gotten an actual jail sentence. The judge actually said that on the record.

Ugh....i'm wrong. Sorry.

Sorry. I don't mean to be an ******* here. I just don't get it. I can understand how you'd feel this way though.

I mean, come on, you wrote a post saying that you don't think gender fluidity and transgendered people should be accepted and you say you didn't mean to be an *******? There are transgendered people on this site. They've done nothing to you.

You've got a lot of hate in your heart to be posting crap like this on Christmas. Sad.

I get you. Honestly, I just want to understand and I just don't right now. Just nevermind....sigh.... Just ignore my ignorance. Have a nice day.

Wheels post doesnt read as hateful. He's asking some legitimate questions. If he's willing to discuss it and ask questions that's a good first step.
