just wondering if anyone out there is into this stuff?

I am and have started to compile a family tree of my family. I'm at 367 people right now, and i'm only on my father's side.

If you are into this kind of stuff, what websites/software do you all use.

I'm only using Myheritage.com at the moment. I really like their family tree builder software. It's got a pretty easy user interface, and best of all... it's free.

I've been doing this for a few weeks using GenesReunited.co.uk I'm on 27 surnames and 254 people on my tree, but I've now hit a wall, my grandmother refuses to talk about here mothers side so I have to work with her fathers side and my fathers side.:o

P.S: and yes I am obsessed.

For some, they are not proud of who they are. So it can be hard to get some information from a family member, humanity is related..so it's impossible to have a true tree.

that's like on my mother's side. it pretty much stops after her Dad because his mother never told him who his father was, so that branch ends and his mother's doesn't go very far.

on the other hand, tracing my father's back, I'm into the late 1800's in some branches.

edit; on a random note, i've started putting in some names in a google search and actually found an obit of one of my very distant relatives, so that was cool

My family has tried some family tree type of things but...with the last name 'Starbird' I think it might be hard to find. (It's Welsch If you wondering.)

is starbird hard to find because of its popularity or lack of?

try googling some "odd-named" relatives in your family and see what you can find.

i've googled 3 random ones so far (most recent being Luby isn't a common first name :p) and have found 2 obits, and a couple links that i'll check out later.

Someone on my mom's side went all out with doing that. Apparently she even had her DNA tested to help. Dunno how far she went back.
Don't know much about my dad's side. We have a bunch of old documents with different versions of the name.

i've never thought about the dna thing...hmmm lol

i guess i got reinterested in this when i saw how researchers traced the candidates lineage and some are actually related to other famous ppl

and then they did it for celebs and stuff. Tom Hanks is related to Shakespeare

My Uncle really got into this. For the longest time we thought our genealogy traced back to Spain... but it turns out it originates from France. Not that you or I care... *pfffffft* :down

Well, that makes sense. :o

I use Broderbund's Family Tree Maker. Easy to use and quite comprehensive.

I also use Family Tree Maker. I get much of my info from ancestry.com. My GGrandfather started it all long ago. He traced some of the family lines all the way back to the Norman Conquest. I am stalled in a couple of places. I have traced one person back to Herefordshire, England and his wife to Belfast. There doesn't seem to be a single record of them online so far as I can tell.

thats really cool.

a couple ppl in my family put some pieces together back in the late 80s and i found a copy of the books so i'm trying to put em together in one database and fill in some holes and stuff then try to post it on myheritage.com

i'm up to 727 ppl, and right now the earliest person is from the mid 1800s

Doh, I misread it :o

I thought this was the gynaecology thread . . . for people who suffer with tunnle vision :o

I would like to know who I'm related to, but I've never really started a family tree. The furthest back I know of are my great-grandparents. I do know I'm related to some guy that died in the civil war though.

I can give you some advise,as well as others who are interested in such things. If you have a relative who doesn't want to speak about the history, start with what you do know. See if another relative knows more than you,if possible..check records.

If the relative wants to talk, yet there is still no information. Check a local center,if your family has been in a area for more than 100 years..there should be information at a loca library or court house.

Most kinds of information is easy to find.

that's what i've been doing. I've found a couple census documents and stuff. been pretty neat so far

I found out I'm related to Bud Abbott.

i don't know who that is.

the only "famous" relative i have that I know of so far is Fawn Hall, who was involved in the Oliver North politcal scandal.

and i have a relative who is an opera performer but I can't remember her name or anything

if you put his buddy in there, i wouldve known exactly who you meant. but on its own, the name just didn't hit me.

I'm pretty sure Starbird isn't a very popular name. Although my mom's maiden name 'Booth' is pretty popular. Supposedly we are related to John Wilkes Booth.
