Geneaology

Damn, thats a lot. :wow: My family tree only has a little over 150 people and I thought I came from a big family. How far back does yours go?

the earliest confirmed birth I have is 1855, but I have parents 2 generations back that i don't have dates for yet. i'm still working on it lol

i'm up to 1408 ppl.

looks like no one else in into this stuff lol

Well, thanks for getting me into this, comicchick. My aunt is coming today to give me dates on the Irish side of the family and to tell me some family lore. You've really started something here. :cwink:

I still haven't started.

I talked to my dad about it and he had 2 genealogy books that he and his family did, but they sold them at an auction 20 years ago. He said the earliest date of birth was 1823.

i found one of our family books. One of my cousins found a copy of the "colonial families of the united states of america list of mayflower passengers".

There's at least 2 of my relatives on that. So right now, the earliest birth in the tree is early 1600s. When I go down to the reunion at the end of the month, I'm going to try and get more info on everything.

ok bumping this for 2 reasons;

1- it's been a while, we've gotten a bunch of new members and i wanna see if anyone is interested in this kinda stuff, has done it before, and what kind of results the ones who posted in here found.

2- my update. found some trees and people who match with mine, and have been updating my tree, fixing some holes, and still inserting from the family books I have.

I'm currently at 2764 people, and the furthest back I can remember offhand is the 1500s for some of my ancestors. I'm really into this stuff at the moment.

Somebody just posted a tree that gave me the info I have been looking for on my father's line. I didn't know my father and had little info on the few generations before him. I had only the little that my mother knew. Now I have the connections to the well documented part of the family that dates back to the 1600's. I have sent the guy a message to find out how he is related and how he got his info but I have not yet received a reply. The other lines that go back to England and Ireland I have made no progress on.

you know it doesnt matter how many times I see this thread title I still keep on thinking it says gynaecology instead of Geneaology

I actually found some distant relatives online last night. My great great great uncle's descendant was looking for family members. I just hope she responds to my message as I have no info for her branch.

i'm glad some of yall have had success. I'm hoping to have some too.

i have heard back from a lady who was indirectly related to a distant relatives wife (inlaw i guess), so i was able to at least get some info on her.

getting close to 3,000. :)

oh, and Demogoblin, where were you searching online if I can ask.

so far, I haven't done any in depth searching, but I know there is stuff on ancestry.com on my tree. i'm waiting til i have more time before I delve into that massive site.

Have any of you ever performed Genetic Genealogy tests to find out your ancestral paternal and/or maternal haplogroups?

I've tried to trace my father's paternal family as far back as I can, but I couldn't get past the last turn of the century.

On my mothers side we have a family book with a tree going back to the early 1500's. It lists everyone back to then. The family name and coat of arms date back to 1324 and we have a church document from that time mentioning the family name. They left Switzerland for Germany for a time then came to America in the 1700s. My dad's side is pretty much a mystery. Best I can guess his side is from Germany.

I have a huge family on my dads side. My dad has 7 siblings, my dads mom had 14 siblings(most of them had many children themselves), I've got 1st cousins who have 15 year old children, 2 of my 1st cousins just had their own children in the past month, and another cousin is expecting twins in a few monthes so thats 3 cousins having kids, and 4 new family members. I had a family reunion a few months ago and only a portion of the living members of my family made it, and there were probably over 2 hundred people there. I have about 20 first cousins, my dad has 53 first cousins. I wouldn't even be able to count how many second and third cousins I have. I have cousins 30 years older than me. My oldest 1st cousin is probably late 30s. I'm 18.
I haven't really gone back very far in my family tree, the earliest relative I know about is my dads grandparents who came to north america from the Ukraine in around 1905 or so.

My moms side of the family is much smaller. My mom has 2 sisters, both of them have 2 kids each. I have 3 siblings 2 brothers and a sister. I have a pretty big family. I live in a place where most of my friends are only childs and have maybe 1 or 2 cousins they know. People always go "woah you have a big family" when they find out I have 3 siblings. They've seen nothing lol

That's insane and actually very awesome that you have so much information.

My parents got into this a few years ago, but only got back so far and then hit a dead end.

On my mother's side, my great-great-grandparents came from Germany during the Civil War, and he served in the Union, and the other line came from Germany in 1781.

My dad's side is murkier. I have a Cherokee great-great-grandmother or something like that, and we think they came from England originally, but they've been in Virginia/West Virginia since the 1600s.

Big families are awesome...for the kids. Not much for the parents lol

Schlosser, they should try genetic genealogy. There are millions of people who do it. When the results are in, you can upload them to a database and they can find matches for them.

Since you're Jewish, I would think you would at least have some paternal ancestry information. Genetic genealogy might also help in that there are lots of information on some paternal lineages.

Sorry for the very late reply.

Ancestry.com was helpful but I made to only sign up when I was positive I had hit dead ends. The first two weeks were free and that was all the time I needed to find more info.

findagrave.com was also a big help.

I'm pretty much done with the project at this point. I've traced my family as far back as it is likely to go, to Mepple, province of Drenthe, Holland, with the birth of Martin Van Alstyne in 1591. If any more members are going to be added to the tree, they haven't been made yet. :o

My tree has 914 people, from 5 different family branches.
