While I can agree that some of the dialogue (especially from the bomber pilots themselves) could have done with a little more subtlety, I though most of it was just fine, and I really enjoyed the film overall. There were more than a few good performances (I thought Ne-Yo was hilarious!) and the aerial battles were spectacular. I don't know why the film's getting such a negative response from critics, but I know that I enjoyed the film, as did the rest of the packed theater I saw it in, most of whom applauded when it was done.

THR: George Lucas appeared Jan. 9 on The Daily Show to promote his Tuskegee Airmen action-drama Red Tails and said the studios he approached had no clue how to market a "black action movie." How do you feel about this?

Lee: Yeah, I was at the premiere. Here's the thing: One of the reasons the studios don't know how to market the film is that they have no black people in the marketing departments! At least any people with say-so. Again, this is bigger than just a marketing problem. What about the greenlight committee? That's the bigger issue. That's the heart of the matter. This is not a revelation; this is truth.


THR: Well, it was certainly novel that a white person in Hollywood, especially someone of Lucas' stature, would be so public on this particular topic.

Lee: Well, George Lucas got "f-- you" money. (Laughs.) They're not going to mess with him. In any case, I watch football, and the Red Tails commercials are hot. The commercials are definitely running on TV.

I think it's got a chance to really stick around. I think word of mouth is going to be really good. Next week, it's biggest competition is gonna be The Grey. Underworld Awakening is gonna have a major drop, I think. And the only other thing coming out, I think, is a Katherine Heigl romantic comedy they've only now started playing commercials for.

Ugh, I hate the way Spike Lee speaks sometimes.

I respect Spike in some ways, but his treatment and depiction of women in his work is pretty bad. In kind of a strange flip side, it reminds me too much of how Asian men are portrayed in work by Asian-American women like Amy Tan and co.

I'm also black, and I agree with you. Spike Lee is a self righteous hypocritical jackass. However, I do think that his quote from above was pretty much spot on.

If David Oyelowo wasn't in this movie, it would be a complete waste of time, IMO.

I went in with low expectations and I was still surprised at how much bad there was in this movie. Like others have said, it definitely has its moments, but the movie's problems are so unbelievably glaring, it really brings a lot of the movie down..

I've only watched Inside Man, his other films don't interest me. I really have nothing to say about him regarding his talents one way or the other. I did kinda like Inside Man though.

David Oyelowo already played a World War 2 pilot in the BBC's Small Island.

They should of got the guy who did the Duck Tails theme to do the Red Tails music for the trailer

Just saw this tonight and gotta say, I enjoyed it. The dogfights were terrific, I caught myself leaning forward in the seat because I was so into them. The dramatic pieces in between left something to be desired, but they weren't all bad. Some of the dialogue felt a little too "off", like you could tell it was just an actor reciting a line without anything behind it (I know that sounds dumb, but thats how some of it came off to me). Otherwise I really enjoyed it, I had a good time and it was fun. A solid 7/10 for me!
