George Lucas Claims Racism Reason for Lack of Studio Support for 'Red Tails'

Tyler Perry films average around 60 million in theaters . Perry is doing well but Red Tails is budgeted above sixty million. If this is a big hit Lucas could make history. I would also play it up for publicity.

Hm. Interesting. I never noticed.

I'm not sure why "black movies" (someone pointed out how stupid the term is, so i'm putting in quotes...) don't do that well.

I watch movies if they look good to me. Cast is important, but if they're all black, or asian, or whatever and the concept appeals to me, i'll see it.

They have to do with everything. Where was all the black people in Star Wars? Sans Lando, and Mace.

He made and financed a movie with an all black cast. If it's a good movie, and well marketed, it will do well. It doesn't even look like a good movie to me. Looks really bland. Looks like Flyboys, or that other plane movie.

Guess I don't like plane movies.

Anyway, I know what you're doing. I see this happen a lot. Someone makes some points, and then another person takes those points to turn the person into a horrible villain. Maybe my points aren't perfect. But not nearly as sinster as you're making them to me.

I can't twist nonexistent points.

Because. He has never experienced it. And has done nothing about it, until now.
cept maybe the last 23 years he spent trying to get this movie made IN the Hollywood system...

Yeah. Kinda, I mean, I have no idea if Lucas is stating facts or not, but I don't know. I'm not black, so I can't say I understand weather or not it's true.

Doesn't Tyler Perry's movies make a lot of money?

commenting is one thing, but the way it comes off, it seems like Lucas is trying to make a stand here.
you don't have to be black to do a little research and come to an obvious conclusion

per capita yes but none of his movies has broken 100 mill they are produced at like 10-15 mill each

he's not trying to make a stand he IS making a stand

But he made 3 HUGE movies, with one black guy in it, who's actually bearly in it, and then dies like "a *****". Something Sam Jackson said his character wouldn't.

I'm just saying. Seems quite strange that this man, out of all the men in hollywood, would stand up to lack of black actors in hollywood.
Unless once he discovered the problem he set out to do something about it... and it has taken this long for his efforts to be revealed

No. But it's the same as that South Park episode.

Stan thinks it's not a big deal that his dad said the N word by accident.

Token said it was. Stan kept trying to apologize for it, but Token kept telling him he doesn't get it.

It's not until the end that Stan realizes...HE DOESN'T GET IT.

But thanks for calling me Racist anyway.
kinda like someone saying a guy is acting black, then ignoring it when he's asked about it, then trying to change what he said when he is revealed to have made an Extremely Ignorant Comment? is that what that's like?

Here's a question...aside from the leads' race and Bay not being there...is there anything that seems to stand this movie out from Pearl Harbor?

Pretty sure it's not a love story like Pearl Harbor was.

Whatever. I made a mistake. I SAID THE WRONG THING. I was wrong. So wrong.

Maybe the movie was terrible. The reviews aren't looking that good so far.

If the movie is good, it will be because Lucas didn't write or direct it.

If it is bad, then he will be blamed 100%.

The GL hate and envy on the interwebz is hilarious. I love it.

I only know this because Lucas was on The Daily Show recently and talked about it. Then I checked Box Office Mojo. I honestly just hope it's actually good. Lucas joked this is the closest SW fans will get to Episode 7.

Anyway , I'll watch a movie if it looks entertaining. I'm sure most people here are the same way.

Actually they reveal a very sinister and prevalent mind set that I'm trying to point out here... one it seems you (like a Lot of non minority americans) are completely ignorant of one that's been programming you to say when you think someone is doing something wrong and it has something to do with race that he is "acting Black"

Not sure what to believe about the studios turning it down though. They could have several reasons.
yeah it's a "Black Film" with a high budget... like he said ... do the research if you doubt him

really? well what foreign ( to you're life experience) films do you watch? Asian cinema? Bollywood films? I ask in all seriousness because if you do watch something other good for you if all you watch are American films maybe you need to readjust how you perceive the way you make your movie selections...

Well, think about it....it does make sense.

I mean. he wrote the story, and plot for the flick. He probably will have a hand in the post production field.

But if not, and he stays away..it might be alright.

Doesn't matter. Lucas haters will hate anything he does because he does it.

I know this because I am the same way with Frank Miller. At least Lucas' creations were his own to screw up, however (for those who hate the latter day SW). Miller destroyed other people's characters, IMO.

Sounds like the some old crap to me. If something doesn't go your way then cry racism. :whatever:

That movie FLYBOYS with James Franco tanked too and there was only like one black pilot in it.

Since when did George Lucas become Spike Lee? Especially after Jar Jar Binks.

If there is no studio support, why is Fox releasing it?

The real breakthrough will be when there is a black George Lucas-a black filmmaker who creates something that catches on huge like SW did and becomes a phenomenon. Until then, all studios will fund and promote from black filmmakers will be hood and Tyler Perry type **** unless it's Will Smith.

well he had to finance the movie himself less risks for fox i would think

That too. I mean, the studios hate Lucas over the directors guild stuff, so they would be slow to support him no matter what he does. Probably he is just trying to draw attention to the film and to the situations black filmmaker do find themselves in. It does seem that Lucas is very supportive of other filmmakers. He is a movie fan.

Period pieces, especially about wars, usually have a niche audience. Unless they get a lot of acclaim, they tend to have modest box offices.

But yeah, Hollywood is pretty damn racist. But so are most movie goers, even if they don't realize it.

I was worried about that with Cap, to be honest.

This movie is important to me not just because it's about the Tuskegee Airmen, but because it's about WWII, which is America's greatest moment, IMO....and we are losing more and more WWII vets every day. I know there's a ton of WWII movies, but there are never enough and the guys who fought and won it can never be praised enough.

I am biased since my dad is a WWII vet, of course. I remember when we visited the memorial and children were playing in the fountain there...someone said something about those kids shouldn't be doing that at such a place...my dad told them those kids were the reason they fought the war.

I fond it vastly entertaining (Read Irritating) how many people dismiss his claim with out even doing cursory research as Bullets has sometimes people cry racism cause the $#!+ is Racist...
It hasn't gone away it's gone PC and fringe. it's in every time someone tells someone they are or are not Acting Black. It's on such websites as Chimpout, and Stormfront. It's in lessons being taught to third graders using slavery examples to teach math, it's in every Liberals "They can't help it" or "Need to help Those Poor people"... It is in every newscasters mouth as Mr. Obama and in all the "Jokes" that reference the Presidents race. It is Rampant in Meme's Across the internet yet people still refuse to see it for what it is...
