Action-Adventure Gladiator Sequel | Paramount

On the subject of the main character/performance. I can tell you that the main character was the least interesting aspect of the movie. What I can't tell you is it cause of acting choices or the script. Cause the performance is meh and has zero range, but it isn't like they gave him tons of material on the script after the opening to do anything but brood. So, pick who you want to blame for it, but end result is the protagonist here sucks. The story also isn't engaging. Gladiator is a simple movie. Maximus wants to kill unlikable antagonist for reasons the audience can understand and we want to see evil dude die.

In this movie, the guy our hero wants to kill is....actually a great guy? Yeah, I want to see our hero kill a good man and a Roman hero! So we supplement with emperors who are in the story less than Commodus was, and thus while they're awful people who really cares about them in the end. Denzel is great in this movie, but our hero's attention doesn't turn towards him until literally the end of the movie. So not much of a budding rivalry I can sink my teeth into here.

All in all, this movie resembles Gladiator but also tries to move the various elements around to make it a little different, but they way they did it made for an unengaging story I never ultimately cared about.

2.5/5 for the visuals alone. Script is a mess

You know what was laughable?

At the very end when Lucius is riding on horseback through all those hundreds of Romans who just conveniently LET him pass instead of, oh, i dont know, easily striking him down? Why did they let him pass? Come on, Ridley!

Also the movie just sort of ends? He goes to the Colliseum, asks Maximus to speak to him, we get that shot of his hand in the field, and then BAM! Credits. Super abrupt ending

The ending in general was SUPER corny. Lucius gives a big Braveheart speech and thats it? Conflict over? Was THAT what this movie was about?!

Yeah, the third act of this movie was a complete rushed mess, but I still enjoyed it enough overall. I'd give it like a 7 or a 7.5 which is solid IMO, but this movie should have been great.

The first Gladiator is like a 9/9.5 for me which is near perfect which is why this only being decent to good is so disappointing and I was at least hoping it would be on par with some of Ridley's more recent stuff like The Martian or The Last Duel but its definitely closer to stuff like Napolean or House of Gucci.

Denzel is easily the highlight outside of the action and the spectacle which why I would recommend watching this on the biggest/loudest screen possible but its not memorable at all.

I actually didn't mind Mescal as the lead in this although he's nowhere near Russel Crowe's iconic performance in the original film, but I liked his savagery and physicality during those fight scenes.

I honestly thought Pedro Pascal and Joeseph Quinn were done the dirtiest in this because I really liked their performances, but they weren't in this nearly as much as I thought they would be.

At least Connie Nielsen got a good amount of screentime, and I enjoyed her scenes and I was amused at how little and underutilized both Rory McCann and Peter Mensah were.

Also, the little monkey was hilarious lol.

They could have gone full Disney by having Russell Crowe appear at the end as a force ghost helping out in the final battle. Then you end by having him turn to camera and yell "are you not entertained?!" and cut to black. CREDITS

Sounds like Denzel is telling the truth and there's probably some different film hidden within his character's plot.
