Action-Adventure Gladiator Sequel | Paramount

Ah.
Interesting that Scott was making cuts on the Macrinas side of things. Perhaps he didn’t want Macrinas to overshadow the story of Lucius.
It was clearly the right perspective to tell the story from. I got vibes of that original concept for Ridley's Robin Hood movie watching this.

What was Ridley’s original concept for Robin Hood? Is that the one the where the Sheriff of Nottingham was using, Robin Hood as his alter ego?

Yeah it was something like that. The story was told from the Sheriff's perspective.

A lot better than I expected. I thought it was going to some predictable route but didn’t. I do wish we got a line on how the twins came to power after the first movie. They didn’t seem the type to just take over by force.

enjoyable. Though Im curious to see if they can do a Part III

This movie just ended up being somewhat 'meh' for me. It doesn't reach the heights of the original (although maybe my opinion is a bit wrapped in nostalgia) but it's nothing terrible or offensive either. It's just another story in the universe Scott & co. created 20 years ago.

A few thoughts / notes. I'll hide spoilers for folks who haven't yet seen it:

I think we could have scrubbed the Lucius character all together, and instead focused on Pedro Pascal & Connie Nielsen's efforts to overthrow Rome. In the beginning, they're discovered and Pedro Pascal is thrown into the arena. Denzel is still vying for the throne, so he kills Connie Nielsen & sets Pedro Pascal on a course for revenge. Square the circle somehow with the son... maybe he's in hiding and Pedro Pascal needs to escape in order to find/free him & restore order to Rome.

Just call it Gladiator III, and roman numerals for the others for consistency.

I checked the box office numbers of this and they aren't great. It doesn't look it would hit $200 million domestically, and $500 million worldwide.

Its going to lose money, this thing was too expensive. It would’ve needed like 600 million to break even.

It’s been showing great legs though. I think more are giving it a pass considering how much stop and go the production had. It’s definitely killing it overseas.

Finally saw this. I did enjoy it a lot more than I thought I would. It is certainly sillier than the first film, and reminded me in terms of feel of being more similar to the Spartacus tv show than the original film. But it was certainly entertaining. My biggest complaint was the musical score which was nowhere near as epic as in the original film and really did make a difference in a lot of scenes. One of the clearest examples as to the importance of music in film.

Terrible history of course, but that was true of the original too, and I always viewed as more of a homage to Gladiator films than an attempt at a realistic historical drama so I didn't care then and don't care now about this one either except as a bit of trivia.

I found this very 'meh.' The original I actually found a bit over rated back in 2000 but grew to love it over the years on re-watches. I don't see the same happening here.

Ridley certainly still knows how to stage an action set piece and craft amazing sets, the movie looks fantastic. But the script and plotting just let the movie down. The acting is good throughout, Mescal just doesn't convince in the role and Denzel chews a bit too much scenery. Lucius also does a total 180 on a certain thing in the movie which I just didn't buy at all.
I didn't realise he was going to be a full on bad guy so that was a nice surprise in a way, was expecting another Oliver Reed type character
. The twin emperor's were hateable but just weren't in it enough to really care about what happens to them one way or the other.

Pedro Pascal's Acacius was probably the best character and he gets short changes in the end. You can tell the movie was cut down in parts as well as the aforementioned 180 of the main character comes from no where.

7/10. I think I will be watching the original again over repeat watches of this.

I haven't seen Kraven the Hunter, but I have to imagine Gladiator II is much MUCH better than it.

Finally got around to seeing it. I thought it was okay. Certainly not the worst Ridley Scott sequel (looking at you, Alien: Covenant). Without getting into spoiler territory, it felt rushed to me and I think there's probably a longer version that could improve it. Denzel pretty much carried the movie but I thought everyone else did the best they could with the material they were given.
