But... wasn't Maximus' son killed in the first movie?
... they're gonna retcon and suddenly give Maximus another son?
Would have been totally out of character for him to have an extramarital child.
I could totally see them retcon Lucius as Maximus's bastard child.
With Chris Hemsworth as his son.
Did Maxmius hook up with Connie Neilsen at any point during the movie? I don’t think he did but if so then that could be where the son comes from. I know they also had a past relationship so maybe that could be the explanation; she hid the kid away because he was a bastard. That would line up with the timeline of the movie if Chris is playing the son (he could have been born about 10 years prior to the events of the first film).
They did not sleep together during the movie but they were past lovers.
Yeah, they can easily retcon that IF they want to. Besides, Lucius could just turn out to be Maximus’s if they really wanted to.
I agree with Schlosser85, seems completely out of character for Maximus to have had an extramarital affair, being so fervently devout to his life and family back in Spain/Hispania, both in life, and implied after.
Yet, it was inferred that Maximus and Lucilla were in fact past lovers. So maybe a case of just placing the affair, before he had his family.
Lucius does read (to me) a little older than Maximus' son.
So it could ring true, if they reveal that is the case, it does not betray the character.
Implication he would not have known about Lucius possibly being his ,
While I don't think the film needs it, it could add a whole new layer to their scenes together, and the fleeting bond they formed, before his death.
If Lucius then rises to power in the wake of Commodus' death, at the hands of Maximus (now his speculative father), it creates some great pathos for Lucius character, as he comes into adulthood, the political power plays that ensue, depending who believes it or not, how much he knows (is told) about his own roots, and where his own loyalties may lie.
True or not either way, could make for some great drama and a curious dynamic, politically, if he's torn or manipulated between two conflicting sides. That then must play out in the arena.
Further, it complicates things for Lucilla, concerning her own survival, in choosing to reveal (or not) who her son might be, or allowing others to believe something, even if not true.
While I in no way need a sequel, to what I consider a perfect movie and ending I wish was left as is.
As far as I'm concerned Maxiumus is already reunited with his
only family.
That's The End.
