Action-Adventure Gladiator Sequel | Paramount

Damn it feels like I've been waiting forever to see Denzel Washington in a EPIC role/movie like this and a part of still doesn't believe its happening, especially under Ridley Scott.

I just went from not caring about this to an automatic Day 1 for me.

I feel the same way! Didn't care about this, but now I'm excited since Denzel is in! Never watched the first Gladiator, so that should be good.

I’m all for colorblind casting but I don’t think it would make sense for a black person to be a general in that time period
Rome was a lot more diverse than is given credit for. To my understanding, it would not be unusual for a local warrior from one of the territories to rise up to general.

Been waiting on Denzel to take on more supporting roles in big films like this. Could be an amazing final act for his career going forward.
Him producing adaptations of the entire August Wilson cycle was more than enough for a perfect sunset career direction, but taking more great acting roles on top of all that is even better.

Why not? Rome had at least one black *emperor*, IIRC. The Roman Empire was a big place, incorporating a whole bunch of territories whose locals would be considered 'black' by modern racial standards. And it wasn't really until the late days of the western empire that Roman society invented/discovered 'racism' in the sense that we know it. . . and it was aimed at *Germans* of all people ( see also: Alaric, and his *three* attempt to become a productive Roman citizen and hand them on a platter a giant highly effective army ).

He'll be twice or thrice Oscar nominated before his "legit" Joker performance in Batman Part III

Calling it now
Could even win an Oscar for playing the Joker like Heath Ledger & Joaquin Phoenix

I'm still utterly perplexed they didn't get the original actor to play Lucius.

It’s tough, because they’re looking for the next Russell Crowe with that movie star quality to lead this. While Spencer Treat Clarke is a fine adult actor, I’m not sure the studio/Scott wanted to take the risk and saw that in him.

Not saying Mascal will blow up the way Crowe did, but I guess they’re riding on his buzz and performances right now.

It's not uncommon in Hollywood to recast the character even if the original child actor was still in the business. See also: Mae Whitman being recast in the Independence Day sequel although she absolutely dodged a bullet there.

Awesome, very glad to have him back.
