One of my favorite films. One of the three films I give a 10/10 to (the other two being "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" and "The Lion King")

But I do have one question regarding the story, who told Commodus about the plan? I know he implied he was going to make his sister speak, but did she actually break? Is that what happened?

EDIT: Or was it the senator?

I gave it a 7/10.

Visually awesome, great action scenes, wonderful use of music.

Crowe is outstanding, Phoenix and Honsou are fantastic support, but everyone else are underwhelming for a movie held in such high regard.

I didnt much care for the plot, but I can keep watching for the action alone.

Easily an 8 or maybe 9 but I dont understand the buzz or the Oscar treatment. Outside of visual effects, costumes, and music (most of which they didnt even win), I question their wins, except for maybe Crowe who was certainly deserving of at least a nom

sword and sandal movies bore me in general. I hate their dialogue, trying to be poetic for poetic sakes.

Ahahaha, I guess that's understandable seeing as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Does the same go for 300, Alexander and Troy?

Alexander and Troy and LOTR

Not for 300, a movie based solely on visuals where the Spartan soldiers talk like they are in an 80s action movie, thats just plain old popcorn fun. nothing more, nothing less

I loved Troy and LOTR (haven't seen Alexander) but I HATED 300 due to it's inaccuracy and racist portrayal of my fellow kin. Although Gladiator isn't Historically accurate either, it's portrayal of the characters/actual people was true enough. At least WAY more than the characters in 300.

Frank Miller doesnt have an accurate protrayal of anything. Real life in Sin City, Spartans and Persians in 300, Batman in the Dark Knight books, The Spirit movie. He lives and breathes fantasy worlds where its ok to be completely ridiculous.

I never cared about "racist portrayal." It was too ridiculous to even take seriously. Its like the cartoons in Penthouse. They are so ridiculous that if taken out of context they make 0 sense so in the face of the law do not constitute libel at all. While opinion is opinion about the quality of the movie, the overreaction against its portrayal ranks up witht the Jews pissed at Passon of the Christ (which is even harder to defend now that Mel is out of the bag) and the Special Olympics being pissed at Tropic Thunder.

Its a touchy subject and Ill respect the fact that you are insulted, but in all fairness and honesty I think its a pretty obvious that Persians werent like that.

Nine out of ten for me.

The film is gorgeous to look at and I love Russell Crowe in it.

Now hold on a minute, the Jews portrayal in Passion was accurate so they can't ***** about it. They nailed him to a freaking cross, everyone knows that. There is no denying however, that the Persian's portrayal in 300 was racist and it was so because it was so biased and fictional.

Important tidbit: The vbad guys were Jews, but Jews arnt bad guys. this same reasoning can be given to many cultural boundaries set by good and bad sides according to plot

Yes, Jews nailed Jesus to the cross, but the Persians were definitely at war with the Spartans. In uber imaginitive mind of Miller that might mean that the good guys are perfect and the bad guys are freaks, but once that happens its no longer a cultural report on Spartan v Persia, it becomes an action movie about the soldiers v the monsters regardless of who or what they may be.

They are obviously fake. Made to be obviously fake. If the Spartans had fought anyone else they would have been styled in a similar way. No one walked out of 300 and said "Wow, Persians were a bunch of ugly bastards." and if they did they probably had the IQ of sunflower seed.

The same thing is happening to Tarantinos Inglorious Bastards. Germans are already pissed at the caricature view QT takes with the Nazi soldiers and the ruthlessness involved with the Bastards. Saying that its a bias attacked giving the Nazis no redeeming features. Its a bit of stretch. its not a morality tale. Its an extreme action movie.

The fact of the matter is that if you're going to do a portrayal like that try to be a little more respectful or add a disclaimer at least. I found it to be VERY unprofessional on Miller's part and offensive.

Me, My Bro, and my cousin used to quote this movie all the time!
I love it....8/10

Gladiator is my favorite movie of all time! Absolutely love it. Needs to come out on Blu-ray a.s.a.p. Plus it better be the extended version w/ full DTS HD as well as all the special features on the extended 3 disc dvd version.

I love Gladiator. Excellent in every capacity, visuals, acting, action, plot. The character interactions were quite Shakespearian, paternal rejection, betrayal, revenge. A truly beautiful movie. 9.5/10.
