Godzilla (2014) - - - Part 12

I was watching it in a big theater in the Bay Area. So not getting any kind of reaction would have been disappointing. Luckily the audience was great and reacted at all the right parts. They loved Big G most of all though no doubt. People lit up every time he graced the screen.

I feel they made a big mistake by cutting away from Godzilla right after he shows up, and then making it almost a joke scene, where Ford's kid is watching this crazy battle on television. Maybe they were worried that the audience would grow bored with the monster fighting for so long.

That said, I also felt that the MUTOs weren't the best choice. Nothing wrong with the designs, but Godzilla's first big movie enemy should be some big name kaiju. They could still use them, but have them be a lead up.

yeah, that did feel a bit comedic, but I saw it like an homage to all of us who watch the Godzilla movies on our TVs when we were kids.

People in my theater took it well. They laughed it off.

Took it for the comedic scene it was supposed to be. Edwards did a great job with his directing in my view. The film felt far more cohesive than say pacific rim.

Such people should probably avoid Gojira 1954, then. Because that is pretty much exactly what Godzilla was created to be.

They just made a Godzilla movie that had the weighty messaging of the 1954 original AND managed to give us the heroic Godzilla of the later Showa and Heisei eras. And people are complaining...

If my 8 year old son can say to me "this is the greatest movie i've ever seen" and talk about how much he wants to go buy Godzilla toys AND be absolutely thrilled and full of anticipation until Godzilla's first full appearance on screen, and later use of atomic breath.... you ADULTS can deal with it and quit being triple babies.

LMFAO! SO THIS!!!

I actually wanted to bring a similar point up in this thread but decided it would piss people off so I didn't.

Leaving the theater the first time I saw it there was a dad with his son (about 10 I would guess) in front of me and the son was rambling all excitedly like kids do: "ohmygosh and I was soooo scared for everybody and the bug monsters were soooo scary and Godzilla looked soooo cool and I loved his spikes and I was sooo afraid he was gonna die and his fire breath was awesome!"

This made me smile like crazy because it reminded me of what I was liked with my dad when he took me to see Jurassic Park.

Then I thought to myself: "And people were *****ing this movie was dull and boring? If this little kid loved it than what the hell movie is everybody else seeing?"

the final atomic breath attack is.........:wow:

(although I think it would have been cooler if his fins were all lit it up like they were before.)

Honestly, both audiences I saw it with seemed really into the movie and clapped/cheered numerous times. They also laughed at the first cut-away. I laughed too. The shot of the TV footage with the MUTO attacking Godzilla's back gave me a giggle because Godzilla was like "Urgh, what the hell! Get off me!"

I think it would have been fine if they had done it later, but they shouldn't have done it right after the dramatic reveal. Mood whiplash.

Speaking of mood whiplash, I suppose that's another issue I have with the movie. They build Godzilla up – very well, I might add – to be almost this inconceivably terrible, alien Lovcraftian horror, complete with haunting music.

And... the end result is, a monster who comes off more like a friendly bear.

The scene where [BLACKOUT]Godzilla shoots fire down the MUTOS throat [/BLACKOUT] got the most applause in the showing.

I must say, I was transfixed and interested in the movie from beginning to end. I never felt bored at all.

I just wish they would have dropped more hints at other monsters existing ( or existing in the future ).

for example, we see a scientist/botanist studying rose dna or something in a newspaper clip.

Incredibly well said SF.

Gracias! :word:

I have been watching the Showa series for a couple weeks now when I get time. I of course have seen all these movies, but for many of them I haven't seen them in years. I've seen the original Gojira-Godzilal vs Gigan as of this post. Honestly, Gareth Edwards had so many routes to approach this movie, and I love he took a little of Gojira and mixed in the later movies once Godzilla goes from the bad guy monster, to the reluctant hero, to the all out good guy. Godzilla sort of makes that journey within this film, and I love it! It took many years for Godzilla to evolve this way. Maybe that is what makes it jarring to many, but I think it pays respect to all eras of Godzilla's history

did anyone else get a "western showdown" vibe, where Godzilla' the legendary sheriff who rides back into to town to clean house?

They could have set that up very easily, by saying that there has been more seismic activity since the MUTOs called out.

for a sequel, i would love to see king ghidorah used... maybe used first as a deterrent against a godzilla that has been feeding off nuclear power plants, kills godzilla, then starts to wreak havoc across the globe, but then is beat back by a godzilla that was revived by a nuclear explosion...

but yeah, i think ghidorah would be a great sequel monster, since ghidorah is looked upon as his main nemesis

Godzilla getting up at the end reminded me of someone getting up after a bar brawl and stumbling home.

But sure, western showdown, that too.

oh, Ghidorah HAS to show up if they do sequels.......but I'm not sure if he should be used in the next film. maybe he's set up in the 2nd film but doesn't show up until the 3rd film.

Thought this movie was really good. I wouldn't mind a sequel at all. Bring back KW and give us a new lead, not that I minded ATJ Though.

came back from the movie with my brother, who is really weird about his taste but grew up watching Godzilla as a kid like me...we both loved it, from everything I read i went expecting the worst but it turned out great, Godzilla has the right amount of screen time for the movie and while it wouldve been awesome to see more, more Goji isnt a bad thing, I thought it was awesome...

also, the Jurassic Park and G98 homages doe...

p.s: was there anything after the credits? I left as soon as they came on haha.

oh man....I hope there's no after credit scene.......lol.

there isn't, right??

Captain Logan makes a good point about the characters around 7mins.

I really loved the final shot.

[BLACKOUT]the calm waters after Godzilla descends back into the ocean. it's like this force of nature arrived, did it's thing, then order is restored and calmness returns.[/BLACKOUT]

The teases were annoying in a good way but part of me REALLY wanted to see those fights but for the movie I suppose it made sense.
