I wanted to be entertained.. I wasn't.. In fact I was pretty bored for a lot of this movie.
I felt the same when I saw Godzilla 98.. I expected so much but got back so little.

Sadly this latest version could have been great...It just wasn't.

You don't like him as the "good" guy? You don't appreciate both interpretations of the character? I can understand you leaning towards the original version of Godzilla, and I love that version too, but I kind of think this was way the best way to go this time. I think that after films like Cloverfield (which featured a monster attacking cities without remorse) and Pacific Rim (humans fighting monsters and saving the day in a light-hearted romp), it was time to see the King of the Monsters do battle in a film that was serious, atmospheric, and which hyped him up to be the "God-like" creature that he is.

A God-like creature is fine. But he might as well have been doing the Hulk Hogan ear move to the people of San Francisco.

I don't think I have seen anyone mention it, but the trailers and film have different footage in a number of scenes.

Examples: HALO drop into San Francisco shows Godzilla heading into the city in the trailer, but in the film he's fighting MUTO in the same shot.

The closing doors on the fallout shelter or whatever it was in the trailer show Godzilla roaring and approaching it. In the film, he's fighting MUTO.

There is also the Casino scene, which shows a earthquake news story about Japan in the trailer, but in the film shows news from the battle in Hawaii.

There are also a few dialogues changes, like the Monster/God thing was reversed. In the trailer ATJ is corrected when he says monster and the scientist lady says God. In the film its the exact opposite.

I know there are more, but I kind of feel scammed somewhat, like the trailers were intentionally made one way to deceive customers into buying a different product than what was actually made. The VFX shots would have been thousands of dollars, so they spent money on it. This wasn't just editing trickery. It was an intentional deception. Now I sound like Bryan Cranston.

It really has been. I wouldn't have been their opening day otherwise.

'Godzilla' A.K.A 'Godzilla: The Cameo' was tedious garbage. How can that be? The film went a little something like this: Dr Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) talks about how he has a ***** for Godzilla. We cut to the army talking about weapons or something (I stopped caring), then to our one dimensional protagonist, Ford Brody (Arron Johnson) who always seems to be involved in deathifying scenarios while watching monsters fight from a human perspective. Every scene was a repetition of these events.

Speaking of ‘The King of the Monsters’. The first time Zilla is shown, he is just about to have a showdown with another monster. I was like ”Yeah, let these mother****ers rip each other apart”. As both monsters are about to collide, the scene cuts to Brody’s son watching the fight on some news report on TV. REALLY? First battle and its shown on ****ing TV for a couple of seconds?

Good point. As I said earlier, Godzilla is quite.. adorable. Almost hugable.

Didn't do a very good job conveying a sense of terror, did it? For as dark and gloomy as the movie was, I found this to be pretty shocking.

I get ya to a point, it was lacking something to push it even more. The fight scenes[BLACKOUT](okay, I get what ppl were talking about, not sure if I liked or hated the skirmish's that were abruptly cut away from[/BLACKOUT]). The MUTO's were okay, did have that old Godzilla feel to it imo. Overall, it was an okay movie, maybe more flow to the story or even cut it down about 15 min's or so.

I saw this film today. I was underwhelmed. I'm just going to come out and say it, I enjoyed 1998's Godzilla more. Yes it was a bad movie, but it was bad in an enjoyable way. Godzilla was certainly in that film a lot more than he was in this film.

As for 2014's Godzilla I thought the cast was solid and the special effects were good, though they made Godzilla look a bit too chunky. There wasn't enough monster fighting and what we got wasn't impressive and often hard to see due to it being filmed at night and sometimes there was smoke or dust.

So, I just got back from seeing this movie.

Overall, I thought it was awesome. I can also see why this movie disappointed some people though. If you wanted a Pacific Rim-type spectacle with this, then you WILL be disappointed. And, honestly? I think this movie boils down all to taste. I can understand why some people love it, and I can understand why some people don't. For me, personally, I really enjoyed myself.

I went in with lowered expectations when it came to the human characters. I walked out of the theater surprised at how much I DID like them, though. And as for the Godzilla teases that people keep talking about? I think they worked amazingly (though I can see why some wouldn't appreciate them), especially since the payoff was fantastic.

I appreciate Summer blockbusters that don't try to throw everything including the kitchen sink at you at the start of the movie. I like that this movie builds up. This movie gave me a Jaws vibe to it, undoubtedly.

I also enjoyed the use of Godzilla. For a first-outing film, I can see why the MUTOs had more focus. The movie had to play with Godzilla's presence, and about whether he was a hero of villain. Now that it's been established that he's neither (he's just an animal who protects his territory and that people aren't a target; they're just ants in his big world), I think they can play around more with future movies. The teases worked just fine for me because it's the first movie that's trying to introduce the character. For the next installments, though, I definitely expect to see more Godzilla.

So far, this is my favorite movie of the 2014 Summer movie season, but there are still plenty to come. We shall see how this holds up!

I view this movie like a sequel to the Japanese movies because that's kinda how it's structured. It expects you to already be familiar with Godzilla and lets him take the backseat to the new bad monsters on the block. The marketing and title made it sound like it would be a pseudo-remake of the original, and that's what I, along with many others, expected. However, I'm still satisfied with what we got. Blu-Ray purchase for sure, maybe see it in theaters one more time.

Enjoyed it even more the second time. All the problems people are complaining about didn't seem to bother my parents. My step mom thought the second half was very intense. And the crowd was much better than last night. The Hawaii cut got some good laughs, though the guy next to me seemed frustrated by it. Though it was funny, because the Flying Muto actually seemed to get some sympathy from the audience.

I understand a lot of the complaints. A lot of the issues didn't seem to bother me at all on the second viewing.
