They can do all these "predictions" about the box office and declining years, etc. what it comes down to is what it has always come down to:

If you make a movie everyone wants to watch, people will go and see it.

This is no different than those YEARLY articles predicting that the "oversaturation" of Superhero films will be the downfall of the movie industry.

Absolutely. If it's worth seeing people will get out & see it, and the numbers will reflect that. The only movies that tend to have horrible box office performances are the ones that are terrible.

And I'd say the new releases does play a rather significant factor into Godzilla's box office, X-Men more so than Maleficient since it was more anticipated & made a huge amount of money.

Seems like things are getting a little skewed though. Starting to see movies which don't do well here or only average and the international BO is saving them. It's very commonplace now with the big summer spectacle movies.

To many movies coming out at the same time. Not many people can probably go to the theater twice in a day. For two Blockbusters that come out & hell some months a Blockbuster comes out each week. Most cant afford that much money in gas & tickets etc. So they choose wisely

I liked the film. I'm glad I didn't hate the human characters reading some of the reviews I thought I would. I love how they handled the monsters like real animals with real reasons for coming to the surface.

You shall not be tail-slamed then.

For some movies that is true but you should expect that...international box office is multiple countries all across the world versus domestic where we're (the United States) the only country to account for. So, with such a vast majority of people overseas, I think it's only right that those numbers would (for many) look better than the domestic tally.

Not really a bad thing, I'd say.

I loved the movie. So, I am a bit sad that it isn't doing as well as it could've. Even though they are definitely on track to make a profit. At least it is doing better than Pacific Rim.

I am just really curious to see how it does in Japan, just because.

I saw this earlier today, really enjoyed it. I had heard complaints that Godzilla himself was hardly in it... I thought he was in it plenty. People didn't like the characters... I didn't really have a problem there either.

7.5/10

I will admit though. I told my parents to skip theater and rent it. Growing up with them they always preferred the Godzilla that tore up the city and killed off the military just because he could. I warned them this was the more animalistic style they didn't like.

Ya, I get that there are more people outside of the U.S. ..... what I'm trying to say is these numbers aren't quite as impressive to me in lieu of the development in international audience #'s. There's quite clearly a huge difference now than say 7-8 year ago coupled with the buzz the genre has generated. There seems to be an international appetite for U.S. mega-budget spectacle movies, regardless of overall film quality imo.

Been thinking the same thing, will be interesting to see how it does there once it's finally released.

Movie plays great on repeat viewing..I had feared the slow burn would harm going again..it was quite the opposite..

-both godzilla "landings" and the cinematography really sell the scale of godzilla.
-the cutaways bothered me less as well because the entirety of the hawaii battle is seen on the tv the little boy is watching...the 2nd tease while equally cruel is immediately followed by the Halo jump scene.

Its encouraging to know that those that "dislike" the movie do so because of lack of monster action and not because anything is wrong with godzilla himself...a sequel promising more action would still draw in those disappointed by this film. The monsters are clearly the stars bringing in King Ghidorah would be enough of a draw to help along a sequel. I do hope they maintain the tone this film established, as it was perfect.

I'm really, really hoping they bring in King Ghidorah, that's who I want for the eventual sequel. It'd be interesting seeing what they could potentially come up with for the character & I bet it'd make a hell of a CGI creation.

Any chance of Mothra? I know it isn't a huge favorite here but I'd love to see her in a sequel.

In my perfect world they go full hog... they maintain the tone of this film but add an exterior threat. Open up the film narrating how many more monsters have arisen (montage of various monsters in battle including Rodan, Mothra dying) and in the midst of this bring on the aliens with King Ghidorah as their "champion" then have godzilla and Rodan battle him...

the cinematography and scale in this film was amazing, keep that then add even more spectacle to it since it was the only thing people truly found lacking in this movie (I believe a battle in the middle of this film would have avoided the majority of peoples' complaints)

If not go for a "remake" of monster zero, as it was one of the most imaginative entries in the original series.

They should avoid tagging in too many villains as it will only end up hurting the film if they do so. Rather than having too much going on at one time, they should keep it to a 2 monster minimum (imo) so they will have the time to properly focus on everything (i.e setting up the monster, the human characters, fight scenes, Godzilla himself, etc.).

And I'd be cool with Mothra, I'd just want them to update her look to be more monstrous & creepy.

I'd also love to see Destroyah, which could probably fit into the whole "humans making monsters from their mistakes" theme.

One thing that bugged me was that a lot of the sense of danger and dread and destruction that the marketing was built around was taken away from the star of the film and given to the MUTOs instead.

Godzilla ends up as the hero... which isn't the worst thing in the world, and I'm sure it pleased a lot of fans, since it's part of the Godzilla tradition. Just not me. I wanted the approach they took for the 1954 original, or for Return of Godzilla... I wanted him to truly be the Destroyer of Worlds, an awesome title that I kept repeating nonstop to get myself pumped for the film. It sounds amazing and ominous and just badass all around. But in this movie... it just doesn't fit. Which bums me out a little.

Isn't the message that MAN is the true destroyer of worlds? Mwahahaha!

I'm reading the Famous Monsters issue dedicated to Godzilla; an article devoted to each of the films all the way to Final Wars. A fun read.

There have been plenty of good to great movies that have under performed at the box office, and plenty of crap movies that have made bank.

I hope with Edwards moving on to make a Star Wars movie, I hope they let another filmmaker take a crack at Godzilla.

Yeah, in a world where Transformers movies make more than almost everything, I have a hard time accepting the box office is a strong indicator of quality argument.

I didn't feel a real sense of danger. Mostly standard beats in that regard.

He's signed on for the next two Godzilla films, should they be made. Hopefully this time they let him write the script as well, just going by how much better Monsters' human storyline was.
