Going Sane

I liked it but took me ages to actually read it and stick to the story. This was due to the same reason everyone else is saying, the art!

Give it a go though, the story is solid and seeing a "normal" joker is an interesting take

I found the story very appealing, and even a little touching. Apparently I'm going to have to give it another look, though, because never noticed any problems with the art.

The art was okay for mid 80s early 90s work, but for now it looks dated and unpolished.

I had the same reaction when I went back to read Knightfall and NML just a couple of months ago.

the linework looks dated....his personal style for rendering figures and such. The storytelling and layouts though are still top class, waaaay beyond anything in Knightfall or NML which is mostly all junk (yes even Aparo by this stage)

this is the Joker collection:
Goin Sane
Lovers & Madmen
Soft Targets
Killing Joke
Dark Knight Returns
The Joker
Strange Apparitions
Case Study - Black & White 2
Slayride - Detective tpb
Batman Son -> Batman RIP

own them all and be a top guy like me! and no the Man Who Laughs does not get to be included here, that's for the suck/the lame

^ Where's...

Arkham Asylum
A Death in the Family
Dark Detective
Dark Victory
No Man's Land
Long Halloween

???

Well they're missing for a reason DV. By association they'd reduce the representative quality of the whole collection! I'm talking about a tier one of Joker books here and those should not be allowed in ^

Arkham Asylum is borderline I'll give you that, but ultimately when it comes down to it that book still pisses me off. Death in a Family is a milestone moment we all know that, but it's not really a great bit of story in itself and for insight into the Joker it's strikingly void. If fact I think it shows Joker at some of his worst. That nonsense with the Ayatollahs, that's not how I like too see Joker handled generally, it reminds me of Looney Tunes or something. No Mans Land is a sprawling mess in which Joker only plays a final role, and the Loeb crap belongs in like Tier 17. Even if you like those stories (I obviously don't) there's nothing really classic Joker in them. Dark Detective, I know I've read that but I remember very little about it and that tells me I probably shouldn't bother try reading it again. I wouldn't sully Strange Apparitions with inclusion of it's ugly kid sibling

I did think the layouts in Going Sane where better than NML or KF but still nothing to write home about.

Futhermore Slayride is my favorite Joker story in a long time.

Pretty good choices! I've only read Lovers/Madmen, TKJ, TDKR, Joker, and Slayride, but they are defenitely some of the the best Joker stories i've read. I'd add Arkham Asylum too.

hmmm...that sucks. Bad art ruining a good story

I met the artist over the summer. He was a really nice old man and his wife was with him. When I asked him if he'd sign my singles he smiled and grabbed a marker. His wife spoke up and said they were re-releasing it. She was all grins. It was sweet how proud she was. I didn't enjoy the art, but for some reason when I meet artist, or writers it makes me appreciate comics more. Before I met some of the writers and artist for the Harley Quinn series (terrible for the most part) I was all about getting them to sign the issues then selling them on ebay. They were just so nice and excited to see that I had bought them all. Now I feel like I have to hold on to them out of guilt.
