CNN Money reports that Lionsgate has announced a 4-year, $400 million dollar plan to shoot various projects in Montreal; included is a specific mention of the Punisher shooting in October with Stevenson and Alexander attached.

As part of the continued growth of its television and motion picture production businesses, Lionsgate , the leading independent filmed entertainment studio, today announced a four-year, $400 million filmed entertainment slate financing agreement with Societe generale de financement du Quebec (SGF), the provincial government's investment arm that has a $2 billion investment portfolio. As part of its continued effort to promote production of foreign films and television series in Quebec, SGF will finance up to 35% of production costs of television and feature film productions shot in Quebec for a four-year period for an aggregate investment of up to $140 million. The transaction will encompass a broad range of future Lionsgate television and feature film productions in the Province of Quebec, including the planned October 2007 production of Lionsgate's next Punisher film, starring Ray Stevenson (from HBO's hit series Rome) and directed by Oscar (R) nominee Lexi Alexander.
Need I say more?

Sad to see Tom Jane go, but the man did what he had to do. Sometimes you just have to move on.

I'm still not completely sold on the new guy, but I'm coming around. I didn't like Craig as Bond either, until I saw Casino Royale and was forced to take back everything I had said about him. So I'm approaching this positively. Mostly I'm just glad that after years of being dicked around a sequel is finally in the works.

Seen none of Lexi Alexanders previous work but I've added Green Street Hooligans to my Netflix queue so I'll check that out next week sometime.

Yay, Punisher 2!

Yay! great news, now lets hope this one is more violent than the first.

As much as I wanted Tom Jane for continuity (and for the sake of giving him a good script and director) I'm glad this is moving forward.

'Punisher' gets Lionsgate overhaul

'The Punisher,' which starred Thomas Jane in the 2004 incarnation, will get a redo.

Lionsgate is overhauling "The Punisher," setting an October start date for a new franchise that will be built on the broad shoulders of "Rome" star Ray Stevenson.

Director Lexi Alexander, the German-born former world kickboxing champ who directed "Hooligans," will helm the film, which will aim for an R rating.
Nick Santora, Kurt Sutter, Matt Holloway and Art Marcum wrote the script. Gale Anne Hurd and Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige are producing with Avi Arad. MHF Zweite Academy Film is financing.
Stevenson was first seen in Hollywood alongside Clive Owen in the Antoine Fuqua-directed "King Arthur," but he's known for playing the Roman soldier Titus Pullo in the HBO series.
"Ray was the first name I wrote down after I saw 'Rome,' because he managed to keep the audience caring about him despite being the most violent guy," said Feige.
New project will mark the third screen incarnation for "The Punisher," which originated in a comicbook about Frank Castle, a Marine-turned-vigilante who is driven by a desire to avenge the murder of his family after they witness a gangland killing.
Property was turned into a 1989 film that starred Dolph Lundgren and then into a 2004 pic that starred Thomas Jane.
New film will be set in New York, where Castle runs up against a mobster. Pic will be exec produced by Oliver Hengst, Bill Johnson, Mike Paseornek and John Sacchi. Ernst-August Schneider and Wolfgang Shamberg are associate producers.

Okay, now! Who's going to play Jigsaw!?

He goes up against a mobster. That's it? That's the only description of the villain? It would have sounded better if they just said he goes up against THE mob.

I know, I was just thinking that that's probably the vaguest synopsis you could possibly get for this film. That's like the equivalent to saying "In The Dark Knight, Batman fights a villain."
