Gore Verbinski Directs Bio-Shock

It could be the first truely great video game adaptation. If the man can turn a theme park ride into a multibillion dollar franchise, I can't wait to see what he does with something that already has a story as strong as Bioshocks.

And John Logan, my favorite Screenwriter of all time! :woot: The man is brilliant.

Logan is seriously hit and miss. He did Sweeny Todd, Gladiator, and The Aviator, which all rock. But he also did Bats, Star Trek: Nemesis, and the abortion of a movie known as The Time Machine.

What about Prince of Persia?
Anyway...HOLY CRAP!!!!:wow::wow::wow:

meh... i was hoping he'd do something more interesting

Have you ever played Bioshock? It's incredibly overhyped, but the story is the best part of it. It's in the 50's, in an underwater city. It's the only thing that kept me playing it.

Most of these films weren't given the time to breath. Especially Star Trek.

Bio-Shock was such a amazing game i hope they dont mess it up

i saw the trailer for it a while back...
the game looked boring so i didnt pay much attention to it...

I've actually only played the first half, but it's a dream for any visual director.

WTF?!
Dude...it's only one of the most cinematic, thrilling experiences ever created, and I only played the demo!

Finally! Some talent bringing these video games to life!

This could be a great slippery slope if done well.

Imagine if David Fincher directed Grand Theft Auto! :p

This movie needs a lot more Gore and a lot less Verbinski

I think the reason those other John Logan movies turned out good was because they had other writers working on them ;) , jk. Or am I?

I sincerely believe the vast majority of fans that made this game a huge breakout hit will not see this movie.

Plus mainstream audiences would probably dislike the big third act plot twist and totally reject it.

Mike Newell directing Prince of Persia
Kurt Wimmer directing Metal Gear Solid
Gore Verbinski directing BioShock

Video game adaptations are about to get good.

Actually, I don't think Kurt is signed on at all for MGS. I'd love for him to do so, though! (De Luca said they met with him for a pitch, but no current deal is in place).

EDIT: http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/05/gore-verbinski.html - Gore elaborates in this interview about his plan for making the film.

Great news to me. The problems with the Pirate sequels, especially the third one, seemed to be all in the script. He did a great job directing those movies. This could be the first good videogame film. The screenwriter doesn't sound bad either. I wonder if he will get one of the members of the Pirate cast involved.

Sounds great :

Gore Verbinski said:
Of all the games out there, I think "Bioshock" is the one that's the most engaging. I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is brimming with cinematic potential.
It's a much more intimate story than "Pirates." Although its an adventure, it’s a dramatic adventure. I see it more along the lines of "Blade Runner."
I don’t want to soften it to the point where the core audience feels betrayed. The movie audience’s imagination is a lot more graphic if you let them imagine it. We'll have to be really clever with that.
We're prepared to make it an R-rated movie. I don’t intuitively see it as PG-13. The content and the graphic nature of the story itself is smarter than that. It's not for young kids.

The utopian references and the way the characters and world are drawn in that delightfully inspired Jules Verne and Ayn Rand style places the film in a more elevated realm. It's the realm of a graphic novel. It has to have that edge. There's sort of that "Manchurian Candidate" psychological element in there as well.
I'll be starting to work on it immediately as soon as we get a script that's worthy. We'll then move actively into pre-production. I wouldn’t put a time schedule on it so much as to say I'm jumping in with a full commitment.
I’m continually fascinated with videogames as interactive entertainment: this idea that the audience is the protagonist. I think there is a whole form of narrative ready to be born.

i loved bioshock, and gore is a great choice to direct, and it sounds like they've got a great writer on their hands, i just hope they do something a little more interesting with the "twist" at the end of the story. that just left me feeling completely flat and pretty much "um... okay... whatever." at the end of an otherwise nearly perfect game.

Never played the game, but the story sounds interesting, and the fact that a video game adaptation is finally being done by a good director interests me.

great choice, he did a great job on Pirates. i wonder who'd he'd get to play jack,.. how old is Jack in the game anyways?
