Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel and Netflix Inc. today announced that Marvel's landmark live-action television series, which will bring Marvel's "flawed heroes of Hell's Kitchen" characters to Netflix, the world's leading Internet TV network, will principally film in New York State. Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking series is Marvel's most ambitious foray yet into live-action television storytelling and represents the largest film or television production project commitment in New York State history.

Daredevil will be the first series from Marvel and Netflix to film in New York City
Filming is set to begin in the Summer 2014 and will create at least three thousand jobs in New York State including up to 400 full time jobs. The project will include nearly 60 one-hour episodes focused on the 4 Defenders characters: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

"New York is where the entertainment industry started, and this unprecedented commitment from Disney and Marvel is further evidence that we're bringing it back bigger and better than ever before," said Governor Cuomo. "And when the entertainment industry thrives, it fuels dozens of other industries and businesses. The competition for these projects is fierce and Disney could have chosen to film these shows anywhere, but they knew that shooting in New York means getting to work with the best in world. These shows bring New York's super heroes home where they belong--along with hundreds of jobs and millions of dollars in new business."

So, we have two options:

  • The deal does include the Defenders show. This would make it five shows to be filmed in NYC - 60 ÷ 5 = 12. Or, perhaps the team-up show won't consist of as many episodes. So Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones will be 13 or 14 episodes each whereas the Defenders will only be 8 or so.
  • The deal doesn't include the Defenders show, meaning each episode of a series will contain 15 episodes.

I think the first option is more likely than the second.

One 13 episode season for each character with the option of 4-8 episodes for Defenders crossover

I hope Jeph Loeb doesn't get directly involved because then the shows will suck. Hopefully his only involvement is as a observer.

With filming set to begin in the Summer, we should have some casting soon.

"Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a mini-series event in which the Marvel characters from the first four series team up as "The Defenders," much like "The Avengers.""

13 episodes each of the 4 Solo series = 52 (that's "just over 50, not "nearly 60")

...that's basically 2 series of 26 episodes over the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons...

To bring the total to "nearly 60" you'd then need 4-7 more episodes, giving a total of 56-59

:)

They're also doing 4 to 8 episodes for the team-up series, The Defenders, mate.

So that brings it up to a total of 56 to 60 hours.

Well we know Daredevil's coming first and this confirms that shooting starts this summer. So we should be getting some casting news pretty soon :)

If you read my post again...

...that's exactly what I was saying, but with the added point that if the solo series are all 13 episode each, then for the total to be "nearly 60" there would have to be between 4 and 7 episodes of Defenders not 4-8 :)

Do netflix series' drop all the episodes of a season at once? Or one at a time like TV shows?

I really hope so :yay:

There must have been a lot of bargaining and dealmaking going on. Last I heard filming in NYC wasn't cheap.

Netflix shows like House of Cards, Orange is the new Black were all at once. I haven't seen any other Netflix shows yet.

Binge watching! Imagine thirteen hours of Daredevil dropping all at once.

YEEEAASSS, it's happening! I LOVE Drew Goddard so I am particularly pumped about Daredevil. Gonna have to do some sight-seeing in NYC this summer. :D

I hope Jeph Loeb doesn't get directly involved because then the shows will suck. Hopefully his only involvement is as a observer.

Loeb is the head of Marvel TV so of course he's going to be directly involved with the shows. His BFF Quesada put on a suit and tie to sit onstage with Bob Iger and Gov. Cuomo for the announcement. The only way Loeb will keep his hands off these shows if if he gets fired before they launch.

It's hilarious that this thread plunged immediately into nitpicking over the "nearly 60 episodes" quote. 4 x 13 = 52 + 4 or 8 = 56/60. Bam! Done.

13 episodes, an hour apart = 4 movies per character (with an hour added)

The fact that Loeb will be involved concerns me.

What's even more amusing is that we had that figured out moments after the original announcement.

The only thing I don't like about 13 episodes dropping all at once is that we won't be able to really discuss each episode in depth every week. We'll also have to be weary of people who haven't finished watching the entire season, etc. (I think we should give it a day after they come out before before discussing spoilers, JUST a day lol)

BUT...

I'm totally going to binge watch these shows when they come out. I can't wait.

I'll have to ration this stuff out at least a little. 2-3 episodes a day, at most.
