I have a feeling that sometime in the next 10 years governments will begin creating laws against citizens exploring spce. Should they? Do they have a right too?

Of course they don't have the right to regulate the use of space, but they do have the right to regulate who uses their airspace. For example the Americans could put a ban on all non-sanctioned flights into outer space as a safety precaution.

This would probably be to protect the public from falling debris when Joe Farmer's home-made rocket detonates 15 seconds into takeoff.

Good points. I still dont like it though. It makes me feel like you cant escape them, its their world an they grant you permission to live in it.

Yeah, but I bet they'll start granting licenses to space tourism companies once it becomes financially sustainable. Didn't Virgin offer that prize of a million bucks to whoever could design a reusable high-altitude/low-orbit spacecraft and successfully fly it a few years ago?

My guess is we'll see more of that in the next decade, but space tourism won't take off as a real corporate venture until around 2020. That's what I think.

Various different governments will try to regulate access to outerspace, just like some of them are trying to regulate stem cell research. What will happen is that the people who have the money to actually start their own space programs will go to countries that permit it (just like the folks that are currently leaving the country to get stem cells).

The government is taking many steps to make sure that space exploration spreads into the commercialized world, and it's working.

The government will have to regulate space flight much the same way health inspectors shut down nasty restaurants.

The worst case scenario for effecting the freedom of space exploration is the threat of terrorism, spies, or enemy combatants.

Space is not theirs to regulate. Are they going to start taxing space as well?

There's a little bit more safety involved with Space. I mean if shuttles aren't regulated in some way, they could be unsafe. Safety should be top most on the minds of people and NASA should have to make sure all shuttles are fit for space travel. NASA has been there for every large jump in the Space program. I see no reason why they shouldn't continue.

I just dont see how its theirs to regulate though. I hate the fact that even in endless space your not free from the governments I find it disturbing.

I think we can all admit that space travel NEEDS regulating if only to protect the public but, if not the government, then who should be the agency responsible for overseeing space travel? Is the government not the best equipped for the job? They already have spy satellites up there, so I don't understand the apprehension.

News flash: you're not going to be free from the government ANYWHERE.

I know I wont thats what I dont like. I think its insane they can claim the infinite universe as "theirs" to "protect the people".

Would you rather an unsafe shuttle be sent up and have everyone die? I mean, NASA knows what it's doing. Since the 60s there's only been 3 major accidents. I'd say that's a damn good track record.

Especially for a mode of transportation that is little more than strapping some people atop an exploding tank of chemicals. :p

Exactly. I think that people get too caught up in being trendy and distrust anything has to do with the government than all common sense gets thrown out the window. This isn't about owning space, it's about safety and NASA knows what they're doing. End of story.

I agree with the safety issue BUT I dont like the fact that government territory will start extending into space. I just dont like it.

My dream has been to get away from governments an live my life with true freedom. Space was my last hope.

i imagine that someday we will tax it the way we tax everything. Businesses have plans for space motels and certain enterprises are in the early stages of sealing a deal with the government to have a motel added onto the manned moon base.

However right now the thing to do, which I'm sure the government will do is offer tax breaks or tax exemption to help promote the commercialization of space.

Some space satelites are now being powered by nuclear fission, and soon manned spaceflights might be as well.

Would you not want government oversight when nuclear devices are involved? These things are powered by nuclear explosions where the force propels the object. Do you want these falling from the sky?

so if astronauts murder each other up there we shouldn't do anything about it? or if private enterprise sends up a spy satelitte? Eventually people will be living on the moon. We will need government there.

And for the space motels? People staying at those should not lose their rights.

I imagine that space will be akin to international waters. While the vessel carrying the flag of her originating nation are subject to the laws of that nation, space itself will not answer to any jurisdiction.

Space is infinite and no one should own that.Let people explore space on their own, even if they use their own ships.I dont think people would accept rules against space travel also.

I hope that remains one of the few things that people wont bother to put laws with,or try to discourage people from doing..when they have the technology to do so.
