Grayskull: Masters of the Universe - Part 2

Even the original '87 film was the most expensive movie Cannon had ever made

It always struck me as something you'd see in Heavy Metal, but for kids.

Yep. Everytime I watch the original cartoon, the roto-scope animation style, and the sword/sorcery sci/fi fantasy elements reminds me of Heavy Metal ( 1981), minus the animated sex and graphic violence.

While i'd love you to be right. It boils down to money, all those films are essentially a normal universe with a few CGI characters thrown in, MOTU would take a ton of unique sets, costumes CGI. It'd be on scale (as mentioned already) with Thor.

And look how successful Thor was.

And while Scooby Doo, G.I. Joe, and Transformers were all critical failures, they were also successful enough at the box office to warrant sequels. Some of them more than one.

I did a Masters of the Universe Fancast some time back. I guess I should put the same down here.

1. He-Man- Alexander Skarsgård
Okay, like many others over here, I’d have loved Chris Hemsworth to be He- Man. Unfortunately, he went ahead and did Thor after which I didn’t exactly feel like casting him in a somewhat similar role (okay, may be not that much). I feel I have a viable alternative in Skarsgård, famous for playing Eric Northman in True Blood. This role could well be the platform his career has been looking for. Agreed, he’d have to beef up quite a bit for the role, but hey, no one said it was going to be easy playing He-Man!

2. Prince Adam-Jesse Spencer
Again, while some may go for the same actor or a visibly younger actor, I personally feel that someone who is leaner than Skarsgård and somewhat looks similar should do it. My choice is Jesse Spencer from House. He’s been around a long time and is pretty underrated and I guess, its time he did something bigger.

3. Man-at-Arms-Jeffrey Dean Morgan
This guy just exudes charisma, doesn’t he? The way I picture Man-at-Arms, Ted Levine would be too old to play him. He should be one of the central characters of the movie and I think JDM is the man to do it.

4. Teela- Amanda Righetti
She is my pick for Teela. She is a good actress-watched her in Mentalist, and her body structure means she can make those action scenes look believable unlike the many other borderline anorexic actresses talked about for this role.

5. Sorceress- Winona Ryder
She is a fantastic actress and is absolutely gorgeous. From where I see it, she would own the role.

6.Stratos- Djimon Hounsou
Okay, Okay. Before you all get worked up seeing Hounsou cast as Stratos, give me a chance to explain myself. He is a good actor- I don’t think there are any qualms about that. And Stratos doesn’t necessarily have to be Caucasian. In fact, most of his body is, well, non human. So, as long as we have a talented and muscular actor such as Djimon playing the role, I think it’s going to work.

7. Ram-Man- Liev Schreiber
I wanted someone big but not overly huge like say The Big Show for the role. Schreiber is one hell of an actor. I have a good feeling about this.

8. King Randor- Dolph Lundgren
The original He-Man returns!

9. Queen Marlena -Sigourney Weaver
Ode to the genre, I’d say. And she looks the part.

10. Orco -Ahmed Best
I was re-watching the Star Wars series that day and the irritating voice of Jar Jar Binks just kept reminding me of Orko.

THE VILLAINS

11. Skeletor -Viggo Mortensen
He is an awesome actor with a tremendous presence as seen is LoTR. There are few better who deserve to play the iconic villain.

12. Evil-Lyn- Marion Coutillard
There is this mystique surrounding her that makes me think she could play pure evil just as easily as she played John Dillinger’s lover in Public Enemies.

13. Beastman - Ron Perlman
Cliché, huh? Well, can’t help it. He’s just too perfect.

14. Trap- Jaw -Dominic West
I find him to be an awesome actor who can actually make you hate him by pure acting brilliance. Welcome aboard, Trap-Jaw!

15. Tri-Klops - Ray Park
Probably casted him on impulse once I saw Tri-Klops wielding a sword. But now I do think he’d be a damn good choice for Tri-Klops.

16. Mer-Man- James Frain
Watched The Cape sometime back (Don’t do it, isn’t worth it) and Frain’s psychotic villain Chess just stuck a chord. He’d make for a good Mer-Man, I believe.

That's all, I guess. What do you guys think?

Not bad casting suggestions, though I think Jessie Spencer would be too old and mature-looking to be Adam once the movie actually begins filming.

James Frain should get a promotion though: he'd make a better Skeletor than Viggo, and he'd be cheaper too.

9. Queen Marlena -Sigourney Weaver
Ode to the genre, I’d say. And she looks the part.

We could pretend Alien 3+4 never happened, and after Alien 2 the Sulaco crash landed on Eternia and Ripley married Randor. Hicks would become the Man At Arms, Roboto could be Bishop with new technology added, and Newt could end up being the Starchild. These people deserved a happy ending like this. :funny:

I would pay to see Dolph act opposite Weaver, LOL!!!! :p

The casting is perfect, except for He-Man and Prince Adam.

Based on discussions on another site I posted this on, most suggested I do away with the transformation entirely and keep He-Man as such. Though I'm not quite happy with that, this does scrap out my Adam pick I have had some criticism for.

Though, I still believe Skarsgård has the ability to be a wonderful He-Man if he bulked up a bit!

Conversely, one could take the easy way and cast Chris Hemsworth as He-Man and Liam Hemsworth as Prince Adam!

So one beefy dude transforms into another slightly older and equally beefy dude?

LOL!

Liam is as beefy as Chris?

I just suggested it in passing anyway.

Though seeing the pics from the older Filmation cartoon, that wouldn't be far from the truth? I mean, Adam was quite muscular, wasn't he?

why did the figure man at arms have no 'stash ..pissed me off to no end as a kid.

I dont really care for ram man or lock jaw.

i liked the 1st wave of figures. i loved zodiac.

Always saw Sigourney Weaver as the Sorceress instead of Queen Marlena. Can't see Winona Ryder as the Sorceress or any MOTU character really. Not sure why.

Chris would have to bulk up, and Liam would have to go on the Ally McBeal diet.

Chris Hemsworth is about as bulked up as a man can be without actually being on steroids.

It wouldn't work in a live-action movie. If they're doing the secret identity thing, they have to look like different guys. It's not a simple costume change like Clark Kent, it's a full physical transformation from scrappy young prince into superhero.

Exactly.

At the present moment I'm more for doing away with the transformation completely, though.

... if c. hemsworth wasn't already thor, he'd make a good He-Man..

I can definitely understand that. The whole secret identity thing doesn't make as much sense with He-Man. In "Prince Adam No More", Sorceress tells Adam that if He-Man's enemies found out, they would target his loved ones, etc. Except they already do. The bad guys still hatch schemes against Adam's parents (the king and queen), and Adam's closest friends fight alongside He-Man all the time anyway. If Skeletor learned his secret identity, it would certainly be a problem, just nowhere near as bad as, say, Norman Osborn finding out Peter is Spidey.

But...I'm a sucker for secret identity shenanigans, and I think there's a way to make it work. Something about protecting the power or...something. I'm still trying to work it out.

He can be Thor and He-Man, like Harrison ford was Han Solo and Indiana Jones.

Thor and He-man would still seem to similar. Although there doesn't seem to be that many options for a new He-man.
